Forcing passengers to alight, trek across Abia checkpoints dehumanizing – NUJ tells military

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Abia State council, has reiterated its call on the Abia State government to liaise with the leadership of military formations in the state in changing the strategy of forcing commuters to alight from their vehicles and trek across checkpoints.

The NUJ, which said this in a communique issued at the end of its congress held at the union’s secretariat in Umuahia, expressed dismay that passengers were being forced to alight from their vehicles and made to trek while passing the checkpoints, before being allowed to continue their journeys.

The communique, which was signed by the Chairman of NUJ, Abia State, Victor Ndukwe and the Secretary, Ikechuckwu Onuegbu, said that the ugly experience was being noted at NNPC Mega station along Umuahia/Okigwe axis of Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, Umuahia-Uzuakoli Road, among other spots.

It described the practice as dehumanizing and a form of torture to the passengers.

The NUJ, which commended the State Governor, Alex Otti, for offsetting the arrears of pensions owed by past administrations, however, drew the Otti’s attention to the plights of retirees of the Broadcasting Corporation of Abia (BCA) and the National Ambassador Newspapers (Abia Newspaper) who have not been paid their pensions for about nine months.

“The development has exposed the affected pensioners to the current harsh economic realities.

“Information available to Congress shows that about eight pensioners of BCA have passed away within the period under review reportedly as a result of their inability to fund their medication occasioned by lack of money,” it said.

The union appealed to the Governor to ensure that the affected retirees who have already been verified were paid.

The Congress noted with concern, the increasing crime rate within Umuahia and Aba metropolis said to be perpetrated by bad elements who disguise themselves as tricycle operators and therefore urged various tricycle unions to cooperate with the state government and security agencies in fishing the bad eggs among them.

The journalists, who lauded the Abia State government’s move to rid its streets of mentally ill persons, said that the exercise should be extended to all parts of the state.

They equally thanked Governor Alex Otti for appointing a member of NUJ, Francis Nwaubani as the acting Director General of Broadcasting Corporation of Abia (BCA) while urging the new DG to uplift the station.

‘I didn’t know them 5 years ago’ — Rema speaks on competing with Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy

Rema, the Afrobeats sensation, has opened up about competing
with Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy — Nigeria’s biggest three artistes.

In a recent interview on the GRM Daily, the ‘Calm Down’
hitmaker stressed that he is unbothered by their opinions of him because they
are not his priority.

Rema claimed “I did not know Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy
five years ago” and that he saw no reason to prioritise them.

The award-winning singer also blamed fans who “make it seem
like any move we make is competition”.

“I do not want to praise
myself. Everyone who has met me has been super respectful. In the game, people
act crazy. It is okay to take bullsh*t or overlook,” he said.

“We are all human beings. But one thing I always want. I
always tell my boys that five years ago, I did not know these dudes. My
colleagues literally. So why would they be my priority? Why would I wake up and
say this move I am about to make will compete with them? Or we go show them?
Why would they ever be my priority?

“It is always the fanbase making it seem like any move we
make is competition. But, when I put it in terms of lyricism, I always want to
keep the sport going. We have lyrics where Davido will be like ‘I’m bigger than
all of them’ or Wizkid’s ‘Dem sey dem bad I swear dem do nothing or eh’. All to
keep the sport going. We keep it the Ronaldo, the LeBron way. When we are in
the match, it is war, outside of the match, it is love.”

In April, Rema claimed that music labels are “attempting to
clone me” — implying that some record labels are trying to model their artistes
after him.

The Afrobeats star also argued that most artistes have used
him as a template since he came to the limelight in 2019.

The ‘Calm Down’ hitmaker declared that he is officially on
par with the ‘Big Three’.

#EndBadGovernance: Guber candidate, activists arrested during protest in Ondo

The governorship candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, in the forthcoming off-cycle governorship election in Ondo State, Kunle Ajayi Wizeman was on Saturday arrested during a protest against bad governance.

Wizeman was arrested by operatives of the Ondo State police command alongside other protesters in Akure, the state capital.

The other arrested protesters were identified as Patrick Owolabi, Oluwatobi Akinkuotu, Kolawole Kumuyi, and Olalekan Oladehinde, among others.

The AAC governorship candidate had arrived at the popular NEPA roundabout with the other protesters when they were accosted by men of the Nigerian Police, who directed them to move to the Gani Fawehinmi Arcade Ground, the approved venue for the protest.

According to one of the protesters, Gbenga Ikujuni, his colleagues were arrested while on their way to the arcade by the same team of police operatives who directed them to the venue.

An Ondo State-based lawyer and human rights activist, Tope Temokun who condemned the arrest, disclosed that the police were duly informed of the protest in a letter by the Take It Back movement, organisers of the protest.

Temokun called on Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa to order the release of the protesters, as they never constituted any threat to the cause of their civic action.

“As of yesterday, a letter was submitted by the leadership of the Take It Back movement to the Nigeria Police in Akure, notifying the police of today’s protest and inviting the police for protection.

“This style of engaging citizens with deceit in civic engagement will not only lead to further loss of total trust and confidence in the police, it is very disgraceful and smacks of playing to the gallery to win an empty accolade from the government.

“The right to protest peacefully is still a right in the constitution and the police and the government do not have the powers to take what the constitution has given to the citizens. There is no food in this country, and the citizens are hungry. There is no job. There is no good road. There is no good health insurance or assurance. There is no security.

“The only thing Nigerian citizens can truly claim to have today is their right to their voice, right of expression and right to protest, and once the government reacts to the exercise of these rights with crackdowns, then this is an invitation to lawlessness, which will ultimately and inevitably reign when the citizens are pushed farther to the wall.

“The arrest that took place is highly condemnable and stands condemned. If the government has any evidence of violence from the protesters, it should come out with it.”

Pastor Jerry Eze rakes N7bn, ranked highest-earning Nigerian YouTuber

The founder of Streams of Joy International, Pastor Jerry
Eze, has emerged as Nigeria’s highest YouTube earner.

This was announced by a data curation platform that provides
rankings for YouTube channels globally, Playboard.

The report said Eze, who is the convener of the popular New
Season Prophetic Prayers and Declarations, NSPPD, online prayer platform with
over 2.12 million subscribers and over one million views daily, earns more than
N7 million every day.

Mr Eze, a former Communications Specialist with The World
Bank, emerged as the highest YouTuber because he is the most ‘Super Chatted’
content creator in Nigeria.

Super Chat, is a YouTube paid feature that highlights
viewers’ messages at the top of a chat for a specified duration.

The longer the message (Super Chat) is pinned, the higher
the cost and earnings for the YouTuber, in this case, Eze gets 70 per cent of
the money earned from Super Chats.

Playboard data revealed that the Abia-born’s total revenue,
primarily live-streamed on his YouTube page amounts to N7.81 billion (money
made during a specific period.)

PH refinery: Again, Nigerians knock FG over endless take-off announcement

On Thursday, August 8, the Independent Petroleum Marketers
Association of Nigeria, IPMAN, announced to Nigerians that the Port Harcourt
Refinery would become operational in four weeks’ time, perhaps to meet the
government’s August deadline of producing petroleum products.

The association went further to say that the refinery would
equally be supplying between 10 and 12 million litres of petrol to marketers.

The IPMAN’s National Operations Controller, Zarma Mustapha,
who let the cat out of the bag in an interview on national television, said the
refinery would boost the supply of petroleum products in the country to about
11 to 15 million liters daily, and help ensure energy availability across the
board.

According to him, the refinery was set to operate
independently and sell at the prevailing market price with little or no
government interference.

“There is this understanding that the Port Harcourt Refinery
is going to perform independently and sell at whatever prevailing market price
for them to recover their cost.

“It is not going to be run like a government entity as it
has been before. I believe that the refinery coming up will really boost the
demand and supply of PMS to nothing less than 11 to 15 million litres daily.

“I am confident and optimistic that this August deadline is
going to be a realistic deadline. It will come on stream and fully produce all
the necessary components that the refinery is supposed to produce,” he said.

However, instead of receiving the news with enthusiasm,
Nigerians were rather skeptical considering the fact that several of such
promises had been made in the past without any of them coming to fruition.

A segment of the society described the development as a
harvest of promises with unending deceptions.

Some are of the opinion that the latest promise which is
about the fourth in the series could still go the way of the previous ones,
even as others have volunteered to give the government the benefit of the
doubt.

Recall that earlier, Nigerians were told that the refinery
would start operations in December 2023.

The Minister of State for Petroleum, Heineken Lokpobiri, had
sounded optimistic about the December 2023 deadline, but at the end of the day,
nothing happened, and no apologies were offered.

On Thursday, March 13, 2024, Nigerians were again greeted
with the news that the Port Harcourt Refinery would become operational in two
weeks’ time.

The Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National
Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, Mele Kyari, assured Nigerians that the
rehabilitated Port Harcourt Refinery would commence operations in two weeks. He
made the revelation at an interactive session with the Senate.

He assured Nigerians that the delivery date of the Port
Harcourt and other refineries remained sacrosanct.

According to the NNPCL spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, in a
statement, Kyari said: “We will make sure that promises that we made about the
rehabilitation of these refineries are kept. We completed the mechanical
completion of PHRC in December.

“Now, we have crude oil already stocked in it. It is
currently undergoing regulatory compliance tests before we re-stream it. I
assure you that this refinery will start in next two weeks

“For the Warri Refinery, we have also done mechanical work
on it. It is undergoing regulatory compliance processes that we are doing with
our regulators. Kaduna will be ready by December this year, but we have not
reached that stage. We believe that it will also be ready on schedule.”

Kyari noted that the Port Harcourt refinery had received
450,000 barrels of crude for processing since the mechanical completion of the
plant in December last year.

He called for the cooperation of all stakeholders in the
rehabilitation process, saying, “We are all serving this country dutifully and
loyally. Nigerians must understand that gradually, we shall get this task
done.”

The statement added that the Senate Ad-hoc Committee was
expected to visit the three refineries in Kaduna, Warri, and Port Harcourt soon
for an on-the-spot assessment of work progress.

The two week’s ultimatum ended in April and the refinery did
not even produce a litre of petrol. Most Nigerians were not surprised as they
never even believed the statement when it was released.

Again, on Monday, May 20, the National Public Relations
Officer, Independent Marketers Association of Nigeria, Chief Ukadike Chinedu,
promised Nigerians that the 210,000-barrel-per-day Port-Harcourt Refinery would
finally commence operations by the end of July after several postponements.

He stated that the development would stimulate economic
activities, reduce the price of petroleum products and ensure adequate supply.

Again, July came and ended without the Refinery working.
Nigerians, again, did not give a whimper because they never took the statement
seriously in the first instance.

So, the latest news that the PH Refinery would be
operational in four weeks’ time did not receive cheers from Nigerians.

To many Nigerians, it has become a festival of promises. In
fact, it has become a cliché to hear that the refinery, whether Port Harcourt,
Warri or Kaduna, would work. Since 2015, when the ruling All Progressives
Congress, APC, wrested powers from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which
held sway for 16 years, there have been promises of a turnaround maintenance of
the Port Harcourt Refinery and others and their eventual operation, but none
has ever come to fruition. It has all been deceptions couched in political
statements to hoodwink the Nigerian masses.

So, when the IPMAN’s National Operations Controller,
Mustapha announced on Thursday that the PH Refinery would begin operations in
four weeks’ time, as an indication of the government’s preparedness to actually
end fuel importation, not many were excited, as most people expressed
skepticism, considering the past promises.

There are various views about the development. While some
dismissed the news outright as mere political talks, others said even though
such promises never produced any positive outcome in the past, they were
prepared to give the government the benefit of the doubt this time round.

Those who believe that nothing would come out of it and that
it was just mere political talks said it was akin to a political campaign
promise where politicians promise that they would build bridges even where
there is no river.

However, those who want to give the government the benefit
of the doubt are of the view that even a liar would have a day when he would
decide to be honest. To them, the government might have decided to turn a new
leaf and do the right thing this time.

One of the proponents of those pushing that Nigerians should
give the government the benefit of the doubt this time round is the president
of Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), Alhaji Yerima Shettima.

He said although he would like to remain optimistic this
time round, he cannot blame those who don’t believe the government’s promise
considering the previous promises about the same refinery, which ended with no
positive result

“The problem with the promise is just that we have a
government that speaks from both sides of the mouth and previous promises have
come and gone without fulfillment. So, even if this one is genuine, a lot of
people will have a lot of doubts in their minds.

“But, I hope this will not be the same story because you
cannot continue to say one thing today, and then tomorrow, you say another
thing.

“Doing that will always put you on the defensive because you
always want to say something, giving people hope without anything on ground to
fulfill such promises,” he said.

He advised the government to be honest and sincere with
Nigerians, warning that deliberately lying to the people always would only
provoke them to anger, which is not good for the society.

“The more you lie to the people about the refinery, the more
you provoke people to anger. So, I am of the view that this time round, the
government should try to live up to their promise.

“I am not part of those who don’t believe that things will
work because I am always optimistic and I strongly believe that there will be
light at the end of the tunnel. So, all they need to do is to re-programme
themselves to be more sincere and honest to Nigerians,” he said.

He noted that the situation was so critical that the
government just has to do everything possible to make sure that the refinery
and other things work in the country.

He also advised that the leaders should not continue to give
excuses because they knew exactly what the situation was before they went into
office.

“We are in a critical period where people must have to
understand that things are not okay and the government must also do something
because they knew the problem before they took over the mantle of leadership.

“And to that extent, ours is to support them, and let them
be honest to Nigerians, so that all of us will be able to survive this trying
period,” he submitted.

But for a journalist and public affairs analyst, Nze
Ezeocha, there is nothing cheery about the latest promise.

He noted that last year, the Minister of State for
Petroleum, Heineken Lokpobiri told Nigerians that it would become operational
before Christmas.

“Christmas passed and we reminded them about their promise
and they gave Nigerians a fresh date, which also never came to reality.

“Now, we are being fed with another promise about the same
refinery. This is the fourth time that the NNPCL and the Ministry of Petroleum
Resources are telling Nigerians that the PH Refinery would be operational in
weeks. And at the end of the day, nothing would come out of it.

“So, as far as I am concerned, I think this latest promise
will end up like the previous ones. We have seen the brickbat between the NNPCL
and the Dangote Refinery.

“Dangote is still insisting that it has not got enough crude
from the NNPCL. Nigerians would like to know the kind of agreement Dangote had
with the NNPCL.

“Dangote also demanded that the NNPCL should be mandated to
direct the IOCs to be selling their crude to him. Did he not make adequate
arrangements on how he will be getting crude before setting up a refinery?

“So, the whole thing about this oil refining in Nigeria is
shrouded in secrecy and deception and the earlier the government comes clean on
that the better for everybody in this country,” he added.

The president of the Middle Belt Forum (MBF), Dr. Pogu
Bitrus, equally agrees with Ezeocha.

He stated that nothing would come out of the promise. He
believes that the Nigerian attitude has not changed, and would not want
Nigerians to build any hope around the promise to avoid suffering unnecessary
heart ache.

“We do propaganda with everything. We politicise everything.
The President doesn’t have to tell us that the Port Harcourt Refinery is on
course when it is not fully on course. Let this government start to do things
differently.

“When things are not right, rather than getting political
capital by telling lies to Nigerians, they should come out to tell Nigerians
the true situation of things,” he said.

Continuing, he said: “There is no point in deceiving the
populace. Let them tell the truth and they will better be appreciated, rather
than thinking that by telling lies, they are playing politics. They are instead
dishonouring themselves, and Nigerians will lose confidence in them very soon.”

Also speaking, a legal practitioner and public commentator,
IK Onodi also did not believe that the refinery would become operational in two
weeks time.

He said such promises had been made in the past and none
came to fruition, and because of that he would not believe anybody until he has
seen that the refinery has actually started refining.

According to him: “It is said that action speaks louder than
words. We were told last year when the Dangote Refinery was commissioned that
it would start producing by July last year.

“From July last year till now is about nine months, and no
drop of crude oil has been refined by the Dangote Refinery.

“We have been told times without numbers that the Port
Harcourt Refinery and other refineries would come on stream very soon.

“If I were the government, I will not announce anything
until the refinery starts producing and when that happens, I will tell
Nigerians that this is from the PH or Warri or Kaduna Refineries. I will not
believe it until I see it.”

For an independent petroleum marketer, Chief Dipo Lanre, the
refinery might not likely work in four weeks as promised.

He, however, noted that he would not totally dismiss it but
expressed strong reservation about the feasibility of the promise considering
the past promises which never yielded any positive result.

“I pray that this time, the promise will be fulfilled. It
should not go the way of previous promises about the refinery.

“Remember that during Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration,
the same Port Harcourt Refinery was sold to Mike Otedola and Aliko Dangote, but
the money was later returned to them.

“And since that money was returned to Otedola and Dangote,
the refinery has not returned to operation; it has been promises upon promises.
It has become a cancer to the Nigeria society.

“I am tired of the politics of that refinery. Politicians
have used it to play politics since the Obasanjo era. What is a refinery
anyway?

“What is the big deal in building a refinery? Since 1999
when the democratic governance returned, we could have built more than four
refineries if we are serious.

“For almost 25 years, we have been playing politics with the
refinery. Let it not be another round of deception this time,” he further said.

Fuel subsidy: Be sincere to Nigerians – Bode George challenges Tinubu govt

A chieftain of the People Democratic Party, PDP, Bode George, has charged President Bola Tinubu to disclose the true state of fuel subsidy to Nigerians.

George said Tinubu should tell Nigerians if his administration still pays subsidy on fuel through the back-doors.

Speaking on Arise Television, the former PDP deputy national chairman, knocked Tinubu’s administration for lack of transparency.

There have been reports that the Tinubu government secretly returned the fuel subsidy regime.

Former governor of Bauchi State, Isa Yuguda accused the Federal Government of paying more for fuel subsidy than before.

Amid this claim, the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun disclosed that Nigeria currently spends $600m on fuel importation monthly.

Reacting, George said: “I’m so miffed about the goings on about this particular industry. On one side you hear the subsidy is still there, on another side you hear that there is no subsidy, who is telling the truth?

“Let us know the truth for God’s sake, it is our fundamental right and if the people know what the truth is, they will support you to succeed.

“The NNPCL is owned by the Federal government which means it is owned by all Nigerians, we want to know what exactly is going on there.

“I’m not in that field of operation, but I’m educated enough to listen to A and listen to B and then conclude in mind if there is need to support the operations or the policies of the government we will and if there are shortfalls in what they are telling us, we will say.”

Police summon Nollywood actress, Tonto Dikeh over alleged Cyberbullying, forgery

The Nigeria Police Force on Friday summoned Nollywood
actress, Tonto Dikeh, to its headquarters in Abuja in connection with an
investigation into criminal defamation, cyberbullying, and forgery, among other
charges.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the
invitation was on the instruction of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP
Monitoring Unit.

The invitation letter dated August 5, 2024, signed by the
Head of the IGP Monitoring Unit, DCP A.A. Elleman revealed that Tonto Dikeh’s
name appeared prominently in the investigation being conducted by the unit.

According to the invitation, “This office is investigating a
case of criminal defamation, forgery, falsehood, cyberbullying, and criminal
conversion reported to the Inspector-General of Police, in which your name and
others feature prominently.

“Given the above, you are kindly requested to attend an
interview with the undersigned through SP Aminu Abdullahi Sokoto on 7th August
2024 at 10:00hrs to shed more light on the allegations.

“Your usual cooperation in this regard would be highly
appreciated.”

Force PRO, who said Dikeh was invited as a result of a
petition against her, also confirmed that she was later released while the
investigation continues.

“She was only invited to respond to a petition filed against
her, and she has since left the unit, while the investigation continues,”
Adejobi said.

Ambition tearing PDP apart – Bode George

An erstwhile Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, National Deputy Chairman, Chief Olabode George, has said that personal ambition is tearing the party apart.

George said the development constitutes an obstacle to genuine reconciliation, stressing that the crisis may persist due to the ambition of certain chieftains.

“Elders of the party have to come into the room to resolve the personalized ambitions of people. That is what is killing our party,” he said.

According to the retired Commodore, the founding fathers of PDP, led by the late Dr. Alex Ekwueme, put ethnicity and religion aside while laying its foundation.

George recalled that by dividing Nigeria into six zones and distributing the top six positions in the country among them, the party fostered inclusion and a sense of belonging.

He expressed fear that holding on to personal ambition may create problems of marginalization and exclusion.

George, who also reflected on the state of the nation, urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to restructure the country to foster true federalism.

Tobi Amusan finishes 3rd in Olympic 100m hurdles, loses out on automatic qualification

Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan has finished 3rd in heat 1 of women’s
100m Hurdles semi-final and is now on the brink of missing out on qualification
for the final.

Amusan, the world record holder, clocked 12.55s to come
third and would now have to hope she makes it as one of the best losers for a
chance in the final.

Transfer: Chelsea, Arsenal withdraw from signing Osimhen

Chelsea and Arsenal have pulled out of the race to sign Victor Osimhen.

Italian transfer market expert, Ciro Troise, revealed this to CalcioNapoli24.

PSG and Chelsea have long targeted the Nigerian but the Blues could not progress further over the player’s massive release clause.

This gave Arsenal the opportunity to enter the race to sign the former Lille of France striker.

The Blues’ deal for Osimhen would have seen Romelu Lukaku join Napoli on a permanent deal.

However, Ciro Troise now reports that Chelsea have backed out after they saw Atletico Madrid forward Samu Omorodion as a replacement.

Mikel Arteta’s side wanted to hijack the deal but have also followed their London counterparts in pulling out of the race.

Troise said via CalcioNapoli24, “Osimhen? Nothing has changed. He reappears every now and then, but the situation is always the same: PSG doesn’t go beyond €70m and hasn’t sold Kolo Muani yet. While Chelsea and Arsenal have withdrawn.”

Reports in Italy say that Napoli’s new manager, Antonio Conte, prefers Romelu Lukaku in his attack for the coming season.

Tinubu should find out why Nigeria’s refineries are not working – Joe Igbokwe

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Joe Igbokwe, has urged President Bola Tinubu to find out why Nigeria’s refineries are not working.

Igbokwe wondered what happened to the four refineries in Nigeria that have become comatose.

He was reacting to a remark by the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, that Nigeria spent $600 million monthly on the importation of fuel.

Edun had said Nigeria spent $600 million monthly on fuel imports due to the high cost to supplying neighbouring countries, extending to Central Africa.

The minister said the situation was a key factor in President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove the fuel subsidy, as the country lacks precise data on domestic fuel consumption.

Reacting, Igbokwe posted on Facebook: “Finance Minister says Nigeria spends $600m monthly on importation of PMS. Please, what happened to our 4 refineries?

“If this is a jinx, we have to break it. PBAT should find out why our refineries are not working for years now. We need to know.”

FG lifts suspension on Arik Air operations

The federal government says it has lifted the suspension on
the operations of Arik Air.

Michael Achimugu, the director of public affairs and
consumer protection at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), announced
the development in a post on social media on Thursday.

This comes more than a week after the airline’s planes were
grounded over a dispute between Atlas Petroleum and Arik Air.

However, Achimugu said the conflict has been resolved.

 “The Honourable
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, and the DG
of NCAA, Capt. Chris Najomo has successfully resolved the impasse between Arik
Air and Atlas Petroleum,” he said.

“By this resolution, Arik Air will begin operations today.

“The priority of the Minister and the NCAA remains to ensure
safe and secure air travel for all passengers.

 “Arik Air passengers
are currently checking in for scheduled flights.”

On July 30, the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA)
said it grounded some aircraft belonging to Arik Air after a federal high court
order.

The agency said the court’s order was regarding a case of
$2.5 million owed by Arik to Atlas Petroleum International Ltd.

Prior to this, Roy Ilegbodu, chief executive officer (CEO)
of Arik Air (in receivership), had said the directive to ground the airline’s
planes was without warning or consultation.

The decision affected the operations of Chevron as the
company could not get flights to drilling sites in the Niger Delta the
following day.

In a statement on August 2, the NCAA clarified that the
grounding of Arik Air aircraft does not include a suspension of the airline’s
overall operations.

Aviation unions further called on President Bola Tinubu to
direct aviation agencies to lift the embargo on four Arik Air aircraft.

The union said the move has intensified frustration among
passengers and exacerbated existing challenges in the country’s air travel
sector.

APC just ignored El-Rufai despite his brain – Joe Igbokwe

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Joe
Igbokwe has faulted the party over its attitude towards former Kaduna State
governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

Igbokwe lamented that APC just ignored El-Rufai without
thinking of how the party got to its current level.

Posting on his Facebook page, Igbokwe described the former
governor as a fearless leader, key player and organizer.

Igbokwe said: “I do not know why the leadership of APC
Nigeria thinks that a scholar with huge brain, a bold thinker, a fearless
leader, a facilitator, a key player, a team player, organizer like Mallam
El-Rufai can just be ignored as if we do not know how we got here.”

El-Rufai, a founding father of the APC, has been sidelined
since President Bola Tinubu assumed office.

Tinubu had nominated El-Rufai for a ministerial role but the
Senate failed to clear him.

El-Rufai’s successor, Governor Sani Uba’s administration had
instituted a probe against him over alleged misappropriation of funds while in
office.

Gov Mutfwang reviews curfew on Jos-Bukuru metropolis

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State on Thursday further relaxed the curfew imposed on the Jos-Bukuru metropolis.

He also stated that residents are allowed to go about their lawful activities between 12 noon and 6 pm until further notice.

Recall that the state government had, on Sunday imposed a 24-hour curfew on the aforementioned areas, citing the need to enhance security and maintain public order.

The curfew was reviewed on Wednesday, allowing residents to move between 2 pm and 6 pm.

The further relaxation of the curfew was announced in a statement issued by the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, Gyang Bere, and made available to journalists in Jos, the state capital.

It reads: “In light of the improved security situation in the Jos-Bukuru metropolis, the Plateau State Government has further relaxed the curfew, effective today, Thursday, August 8, 2024.

“Residents are now permitted to move freely for their lawful activities from 12 noon to 6 pm daily until further notice.

“The State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, in consultation with security agencies, has authorized this relaxation.

“He assured the public that the government will continue to make decisions in the best interest of the people.

“The Governor, however, commended the residents for their peaceful conduct during the curfew and appealed for continued cooperation with security agencies to ensure the safety and security of the state.”

Senate raises questions over $1.5bn expended on Port Harcourt Refinery

Amid pervasive allegations of sabotage in the petroleum
industry, the Senate has raised questions over $1.5 billion approved in 2021
for the turn-around maintenance of the Port Harcourt Refinery with little or no
result.

Consequently, the upper chamber lamented that it was unfair
and wrong to treat government businesses or public companies as an orphan while
private businesses were flourishing and thriving.

The Leader of the Senate and Chairman, Senate Ad-hoc
Committee to Investigate the alleged economic sabotage in the Nigerian
Petroleum Industry, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele raised the questions at a session
with stakeholders in the industry at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

The session was attended by the Minister of Finance and
Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun; Group Managing Director,
Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), Malam Melee Kyari;
Chief Executive, Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Mr.
Gbenga Komolafe and Chief Executive Office, Nigerian Midstream and Downstream
Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Mr. Farouk Ahmed, among others.

The Federal Executive Council had approved the plan by the
Ministry of Petroleum Resources to rehabilitate and turn around the Port
Harcourt Refinery with a whopping sum of $1.5 billion under the administration
of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Despite the huge investment, the government-owned refinery
is yet to function effectively, a situation that compelled the country to
depend almost entirely on the importation of petroleum products.

At the session with stakeholders, however, Bamidele
expressed grave concerns about the dysfunctionality of the government-owned
refineries despite billions of Dollars invested to carry out turn-around
maintenance on the installation.

Bamidele observed that the federation “is undergoing a truly
challenging period,” pointing out that the distribution and supply of refined
petroleum products “has been irregular and problematic in the recent history of
our fatherland.”

“The long queues at filling stations are obviously a
testament to this challenge. A situation, whereby we now depend almost entirely
on the importation of these products, even when we daily supply the global oil
market no fewer than two percent of its crude oil requirements, is to say the
least, highly worrisome.

“We also have at hand a grievous issue of national concern
that directly borders on the importation of hazardous petroleum products and
dumping of substandard diesel into the country,” he said.

Under different administrations since 1999, Bamidele
observed that the federal government “has invested billions of Dollars to
maintain and turn around the state-owned refineries in Kaduna, Port Harcourt
and Warri. But the refineries are not functioning.

“In 2021, specifically, the Federal Executive Council
approved $1.5 billion for the turn-around maintenance of the Port Harcourt
Refinery. Yet, this investment has not yielded significant returns.

“For us, in the Senate, we believe, it is unfair and
unpatriotic to treat government businesses or public corporations as an orphan
while private businesses are flourishing and thriving,” Bamidele pointed out at
the interactive session,” he added.

To permanently nip these challenges in the bud, the chairman
of the ad-hoc committee disclosed the plan of the Senate to jointly conduct
investigation into diverse allegations of economic sabotage in the petroleum
industry along with the House of Representatives.

Bamidele, equally noted that there would be no room for
grandstanding during the investigative hearing, promising that the committee
would carry out its mandate fairly and impartially.

While insisting that nobody will be untouchable, he said the
task of ridding the petroleum industry of malfeasance “is urgent and must be
carried out in the spirit of nationalism and patriotism. We are ready to carry
it out with all senses of honour and responsibility.”

“We are also taking it seriously with a view to addressing
fundamental issues that pose grave threats to our economic prosperity, fiscal
stability and public health as a federation. In line with our mandate, we will
definitely unravel factors and forces aiding sabotage in our petroleum
industry.

“From our findings, we will craft a legislative framework
that will entrench global best practices in the industry; open it up for more
investments, especially in the midstream and downstream sectors and end vicious
regimes of subterfuge in the petroleum industry.

“We are utterly committed to this mandate. We shall carry it
out without fear or favour. We shall be equitable, fair and just to all parties
with a view to promoting and protecting the strategic national interests of our
fatherland,” Bamidele said.

He, therefore, promised that the National Assembly “is ready
to carry out the investigative hearing with all senses of honor and
responsibility,” citing impeccable professional backgrounds of the members of
the committee.

Also, at the session, Kyari declared that the NNPCL “is
loyal and faithful to the country,” saying its management vowed to protect the
interest of Nigeria in the petroleum industry.

He observed that most problems in the petroleum industry
“have nothing to do with NNPCL. We are faithful and loyal to the economic
interest of this country.

“We are not criminals. We are not thieves. But we will
protect our dignity and honour.”

In his own remarks, Edun said the increase in the crude
would stabilise the country’s foreign exchange market while expressing
confidence in the leadership of the ad-hoc committee to conduct an unbiased and
impartial investigation.

Northerners support Tinubu, not plotting against him – Aisha Yesufu

A socio-political activist and commentator, Aisha Yesufu, on
Wednesday downplayed claims that the North was plotting against President Bola
Tinubu.

Yesufu said the Northerners carried Tinubu on their head
with the Muslim-Muslim ticket during the 2023 election.

To this end, Yesufu wondered why the North would turn around
to plot against Tinubu for being a Southern president.

Posting on X, the social commentator wrote: “The North
carried Tinubu on their head with the Muslim-Muslim ticket and even Mallams
from the North said some of us are not Muslims for not supporting Tinubu.

“One even said it is Islam that would have fallen not Tinubu
if Tinubu doesn’t win.

“That is the same North you are saying is plotting against
Tinubu because he is a Southern President. I laugh in Etsako.

“The North gave that Southern President the critical number
of votes to rig election only to now come and start the hard work of regime
change against the so called Southern President when they could have easily
denied this Southern President the vote to rig election.”

Following the EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest, the North
was accused of seeking a change of government.

Some protesters had called for a military takeover. However,
the Nigerian Military has distanced itself from calls to return to power.

#EndBadGovernance: Nigerian Govt reveals why Tinubu never wanted protests

The Federal Government has revealed why President Bola
Tinubu never liked the idea of a nationwide protest.

Speaking to members of the Diplomatic Community in Abuja on
Wednesday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed
Idris, pointed out that the Tinubu administration utilizes all available
channels to communicate various opportunities and initiatives of the government
to the public.

Idris pointed out that it was for this reason the Federal
Government responded the way it did when the organizers issued a protest
notice.

“Our view was and is that now is not the time for protests;
instead our focus should be on allowing these various initiatives and
interventions of the Government to manifest fully.

“Genuine reforms take some time, but are always guaranteed
to deliver on what they promise.

“We mobilized to engage fully and freely with traditional
rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, civil society organisations, etc., to
appeal to them to shelve the planned protest and instead embrace dialogue.

“We also knew that a protest of this nature, lacking
coherent demands or an organizational structure, was very likely to be hijacked
by elements that do not have Nigeria’s interest at heart.

“Very sadly, that is what we have seen play out.

“Regrettably, what began as a peaceful protest in some
States and the Federal Capital Territory, was soon hijacked by elements who
infiltrated the protest and orchestrated violent activities that destroyed
lives and properties.

“There were reports of arson, vandalism, looting, and
clashes with law enforcement agents in several cities. Tragically, these
incidents led to the loss of innocent lives and significant damage to
properties.

“In response to these unforeseen events, the Federal
Government acted swiftly to restore peace and order.

“It is important to emphasize that the security forces were
instructed to exercise maximum restraint and adhere to international standards
in managing civil protests.

“They have indeed put in a lot of work to ensure the safety
of all law-abiding Nigerians, and to maintain order, in the last week. But they
have also been decisive in their response to criminality, and it is important
to separate these from their commendable approach to legitimate protests,”
Idris said.

He reiterated that the Federal Government has launched an
investigation into the violence that erupted during the protests, to identify
and bring to justice all those responsible.

“We are committed to preventing the recurrence of such
unfortunate incidents in the future,” he added.

“I want to assure you that the worst is over, and we can now
as a nation march forward to enjoy the fruit of all the policy and programme
interventions being implemented.”

Airline operators react to court ruling voiding Nigeria Air sale

The Airline Operators of Nigeria, AON, lauded the judiciary
on Tuesday for upholding justice and nullifying the purported sale of Nigeria
Air to Ethiopian Airlines.

The operators said this in a statement signed by its
president, Dr Abdulmunaf Sarina, in Lagos.

NAN reported that Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa of the
Federal High Court had, on Monday, declared the sale of Nigeria Air to
Ethiopian Airlines null and void.

Sarina commended the bold and patriotic declarations and
orders made by the court.

“The bold and patriotic declarations and orders made by the
court leave no one in doubt that the entire bidding, approval and so-called
unveiling processes of the purported national carrier were nothing other than a
sham set up to hoodwink Nigerians.

“It was also a surreptitious plan to kill Nigerian
indigenous airlines and hand over the commonwealth of Nigeria’s huge aviation
market with over 85 bilateral air services agreements around the world to
Ethiopian Airlines.

“We, therefore, thank the court for standing tall in the
face of untold pressure from very high quarters.

“For exonerating AON and other well-meaning Nigerian
indigenous airlines for going to court to protect the interests of Nigeria as
well as proving truly to be the only hope of the common man,” he said.

Sarina also applauded President Bola Tinubu’s government
through the Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo SAN, for suspending the Nigeria
Air process.

NAN also reported that Justice Lewis-Allagoa declared in the
judgement that the action, conduct or decision in the sale of the shares and
operations of Nigeria Air violated the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020.

Lewis-Allagoa also noted that the action was against the
Securities and Exchange Commission Nigeria Consolidated Rules & Regulations
2013 (as amended in 2022).

He said the process was against the Nigerian Investment
Promotion Commission Act, ICAQ Convention, Civil Aviation Act, Public
Procurement Act, Concession Regulatory Commission (Est.) Act 2005, and the
Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act.

He added that the action was contrary to the procurement
processes for public-private partnerships in the Federal Government under the
National Policy on Public-Private Partnerships.

The court also held that the entire administrative actions
and decision in the sale of the shares of Nigeria Air to Ethiopian Airlines and
its pseudo-consortium were invalid, void and of no effect.

It added that Ethiopian Airlines was incompetent to bid for
shares in Nigeria Air and commence business accordingly.

The court further gave an order setting aside the entire
bidding/selection process(es) for the Nigeria Air project as well as the
approval, grant or selection of Ethiopian Airlines by the former Minister of
Aviation, Hadi Sirika, in the process.

The judgement ordered the immediate revocation and
cancellation of the Air Transport License issued by the Nigerian Civil Aviation
Authority to Nigeria Air Ltd.

The court had also issued a perpetual injunction restraining
the defendants, their agents, servants, officers, privies, and principals from
perfecting, continuing and transferring the operations of Nigeria Air to
Ethiopian Airlines.

#EndBadGovernance protest: Tinubu hasn’t disappointed Nigerians – Okupe

A former Presidential spokesperson, Dr Doyin Okupe, says
President Bola Tinubu has not disappointed Nigerians in his address to the
nation on the nationwide protests on Sunday.

Okupe, a former Director-General of the Labour Party (LP)
Presidential Campaign Council, made this while reacting to the president’s
broadcast on Sunday.

“President Bola Tinubu’s speech has not disappointed
Nigerians in that for the first time, the president clearly stated the daunting
economic situation his administration met on ground at inception.

“He also amplified the strenuous efforts made by his
government to reduce the prevailing crippling and stagnating debt servicing
ratio from 97 per cent of earned revenue to 68 per cent.

“In truth, this has been the major cause of our present
economic woes and sufferings.

“It is now self-evident that if the fuel subsidy was not
removed, it would have been impossible for the government to function.

“And the government will not be able to meet its
obligations, without continuing the profligacy of massive and sustained
borrowing to fund the subsequent national budgets,” Okupe said.

Protest: Tinubu not problem or solution to issues confronting north – Shehu Sani

Former lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani says President Bola
Tinubu is not the problem or solution to the challenges confronting the region
although he must be held to account.

Instead, Sani said northern leaders must take lessons from
the recent violent uprising in the region.

He suggested that the governors, religious, traditional
leaders and the intellectuals of the region must converge and urgently come out
with an implementable master plan to tackle the decades of endemic poverty and
underdevelopment facing the region.

Sani posted on X: “Northern leaders must take lessons from
the recent violent uprising in the region. The President must be held to
account, but he is not the Problem or the Solution to the Problem.

The
Governors, political, Business, religious, traditional leaders and the
intellectuals of the region must converge and urgently come out with an
implementable master plan to tackle the decades of endemic poverty and
destitution, Illiteracy, Chronic underdevelopment, abject neglect, religious
extremism and terrorism that has demonised the region and impoverished its
people.

Guns and tanks can suppress the flame but not extinguish the fire. The
monster in our homes was not created in a day.The North should look at the
mirror and not the telescope. We have the cattle to build our wealth, we
shouldn’t be looking for a scapegoat.”

Tinubu should drive personal car, political office holders shouldn’t receive salaries – Adeyanju

Activist lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has said no political office holder in Nigeria should be paid salaries.

Adeyanju pointed out that President Bola Tinubu should drive his personal car because politics is about service.

Featuring on The Honest Bunch podcast, the activist lamented that politicians in Nigeria see politics as a full time job.

Adeyanju said, “No politician should be paid salary in Nigeria because we are a poor country.

“Politics is about service, even the president should drive his personal car; we shouldn’t be buying official vehicles for government people.

“Anybody that becomes president, at that level is no longer poor.

“Politicians are doing as if it’s a full time job, not only are we paying them, they now have 10-20 aides.

“Principal officers in the National Assembly alone have over 2000 aides, you can go and fact check.

“If they tell the president of Kenya that he would beg, would he ever agree? He was begging because citizens said politicians were wasting money, so we need a similar thing from our government.”

#EndBadGovernance: Nigerian Defence responds to call for coup, flying of Russian flag

The Nigerian Defence on Monday issued stern warning to citizens
agitating for military rule in the country.

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Mustapha who
gave the warning while addressing journalists shortly after an emergency
meeting with President Bola Tinubu, also said that those flying the Russian
flag in Nigeria have committed a treasonable offence.

While some of the #EndBadGovernance
protesters were flying the Russian flag in some northern states, others were
heard calling on the military to take over leadership via coup.

Responding to the moves by aggrieved Nigerians protesting
against hunger and high cost of living, General Christopher vowed that the law
would catch up with such people.

Specifically addressing the call for coup, Musa said the
military had accepted democracy and regime change would never be allowed in
Nigeria, warning those behind the call to desist.

“All of us have seen it where foreign flags have been flown
within the sovereignty of Nigeria, and that is totally unacceptable. We are
warning in clear terms and the President has also said we should convey this,
that we will not accept anybody, any individual flying any foreign flag in
Nigeria.

“That is a treasonable offence, and it will be viewed and
treated as such. So nobody shall allow himself to be used by any individual.

“Also the issue of coups, Nigeria is a sovereign nation,
Nigeria is a democratic nation all security agencies are here to defend
democracy and ensure that democracy continues to strive.

“We will not accept anyone pushing or taking any action,
seemingly or for whatever reason, to want to push for any change of government.
Democracy is what we stand for, democracy is what will continue to defend”, he
said.

Alleged killings: God’s vengeance can visit for generations – Pat Utomi warns police

Renowned political economist, Professor Pat Utomi has warned
the operatives of the Nigeria Police Force to stop reducing everything to
racketeering.

Utomi reminded them that God’s vengeance can visit
generations, urging them to fear for the future of their children.

The statement comes amid allegations of killings of
protesters by police during the nationwide protests across the country.

Police have denied the allegations.

However, in a post on his X handle on Sunday, the political
economist said he prayed for the police to realise that the blood of innocent
people slaughtered in cold blood and disposed of can cry to heaven for
vengeance.

Utomi posted: “I have spoken now to one person who was
arrested and has been released. I want to plead with the police to stop
reducing everything to racketeering and to pray that they realize that the
blood of innocents slaughtered in cold blood and disposed of can cry to Heaven
for vengeance like that of Abel and that God’s vengeance can visit for
generations so if they respect not their conscience or justice of a Nigeria
with collapsing institutions, they should fear for the future of their
children.”

#EndBadGovernance protest: Gov Sani imposes 24 hours curfew on Kaduna, Zaria

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has imposed 24 hours curfew on Kaduna and Zaria metropolitan cities.

The Overseeing Commissioner, Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, in a statement on Monday, said, “The Kaduna State Security Council under the leadership of Governor Uba Sani, following a review of the security situation in the state, noted that there is sufficient evidence to clearly indicate that the ongoing protest has been hijacked by criminal elements who have resorted to looting of shops and destruction of private and public property.

“In view of this unfortunate development, the Kaduna State Security Council has unanimously resolved to impose a 24-hour curfew on Kaduna and Zaria Metropolises and environs with immediate effect.”

The statement explained that citizens are advised to remain indoors while security forces continue to work to maintain safety and security.

“Monitoring will be sustained for review of the curfew as required,” the statement added.

Ligue 1: Moses Simon allays injury fears

Moses Simon has said he is fit to feature for Nantes in their upcoming pre-season friendlies against Lorient and Crystal Palace despite fresh injury fears.

Nantes revealed after the club’s friendly against Laval on Saturday that the winger is nursing an ankle injury.

Simon scored the Canaries winning goal in the 2-1 victory.

The Nigeria international stated that the injury is not serious.

“Yes, I felt some pains around my ankle, but I am good to go, I will resume training and play our next pre-season game against Lorient on Wednesday, it’s nothing serious,” he told SCORENigeria.

Simon missed action for three months last season after sustaining an injury on international duty in March.

Nigeria’s debt to hit N130tn in December – Report

Nigeria’s total debt stock has been projected to increase to N130 trillion by December this year from N121.67 trillion in the first quarter of 2024.

Afrinvest disclosed this in its recent report, titled, ‘Bank Recapitalisation, Catalyst for a $1tn Economy’.

The investment management company said its projections come amid concerns about the country’s debt-to-gross domestic product ratio.

Nigeria’s public debt stock, which includes external and domestic debt, stood at N121.67 trillion in Q1 2024, up from N97.34 trillion in the fourth quarter of 2023.

According to the Debt Management Office, the country’s debt rise between Q1 2024 and Q1 2023 stood at 24.99 percent.

Consequently, Afrinvest estimated that the fiscal deficit, total public debt stock, debt-to-GDP, and debt-servicing-to-revenue rate would exceed N13.0tn, N130 trillion, 55 percent, and 60 percent by 2024 year-end, respectively.

Explaining the reason for the estimated debt increase, Afrivest said the 2024 budget is based on ‘overly optimistic’ revenue assumptions, which could lead to a repeat of the historically disappointing budget performance.

“The expectation of a 43.9 percent share of the projected revenue from oil and other minerals is unrealistic.

“The share of Federal Government’s debt in total public debt stock rose 44.6 percent year-on-year to N487.3tn, accounting for 89.7 percent of total public debt stock by year-end,” the report noted.

Recall that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the 2024 budget of N28.7 trillion with an estimated N18.32 trillion revenue and deficit of N9.18 trillion.

Last month, the Senate approved the government’s $800 million loan request from the World Bank.

This comes after Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, confirmed that the World Bank approved a $2.25 billion loan request for Nigeria in June 2024.

Resign if you can’t pay N70,000 minimum wage – NLC to Gombe governor

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has urged governors who are unable to meet the new N70,000 minimum wage to step down from office.

This comes in response to the Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, who recently stated that his administration could not afford to pay the newly established national minimum wage.

Governor Yahaya, who also serves as the Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum, made these remarks during a meeting with labour leaders, civil society organisations, and traders associations at the Government House in Gombe.

In reaction to Governor Yahaya’s statement, Benson Upah, the Head of Public Relations for the NLC, advised the governor to resign.

“He should quit if he cannot pay. He took an oath of office to uphold the law and not to break it,” Upah asserted.

No official statement has been released by the Trade Union Congress in response to inquiries regarding the governor’s position.

Recall that last week, President Bola Tinubu signed the new Minimum Wage Act into law, officially setting the minimum wage at N70,000.

This decision followed nearly two weeks of negotiations between the President and the organised labour unions, who had initially demanded over N250,000/month minimum wage.

On July 18, the Federal Government, the organised labour, and the private sector concluded their months-long discussions on the minimum wage, resulting in a consensus for the N70,000/month figure.

Subsequently, on July 15, the Federal Executive Council tasked the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning with preparing a bill to amend the 2024 Budget.

A week later, President Tinubu submitted a request to the Senate to amend the 2024 Appropriation Act and the 2023 Finance Act, proposing an increase in the budget by N6.2 trillion.

The letter was addressed to the Senate President and read during a plenary session.

The President’s action was pursuant to Section 58 (2) of the Constitution.

The Federal Government has sought to allay fears regarding compliance with the new minimum wage, stating that the extensive negotiations and consensus-building efforts from early February to July included all relevant stakeholders.

EXPLAINER: Was Tinubu’s speech ‘leaked’? What to know about presidential broadcasts

Early Sunday morning, President Bola Tinubu addressed
Nigerians in a televised broadcast amid the #EndBadGovernance protest, which
commenced on Thursday in many parts of the country.

Hours before his address, his speech surfaced on the
internet in what many called a “leak”.

Public figures, including politicians, knocked the
presidency for “fooling Nigerians”, while some expressed concerns about the
safety of other classified documents.

But was the president’s speech top secret in the first
place? Here’s what to know about presidential broadcasts.

HOW IS A PRESIDENTIAL
BROADCAST DISSEMINATED?

Hours before a presidential broadcast, an embargoed copy is
disseminated to select media houses, especially the print media.

These media houses are trusted with the speech to enable
them to prepare timely and accurate reports as the president delivers his
address.

WHO IS IT SHARED
WITH?

The presidential speech is usually dispatched to the editors
of the media houses ahead of the broadcast.

WHAT ARE THE STIPULATED
CONDITIONS WHEN SHARED?

The speech will be under strict embargo until the president
delivers his address. In most cases, the media houses are permitted to share
the speeches at least 15 minutes into the broadcast.

Sharing the speech before the president’s broadcast flouts
the agreement with the media and creates a lack of public trust in the
presidency. It also affects the relationship between the media and the
government.

WHY IS EARLY
DISSEMINATION IMPORTANT?

To ensure the broadcast makes the front pages of mainstream
newspapers, it is expected that the speeches are disseminated the night before,
especially for broadcasts that are made early in the morning.

For print media houses, this gives them ample time for
production.

IS IT GLOBAL BEST
PRACTICE?

Disseminating presidential speeches before they are
televised is not a practice peculiar to Nigeria; it is done globally.

The practice is not only restricted to presidencies. Large
multilateral organisations such as the United Nations (UN) and other
international non-governmental organisations also engage in this practice.
