Constitution amendment: First draft ready in August 2025 – Kalu

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu has said that the first draft report of the ongoing review of the 1999 constitution would be ready in August 202.

He equally said the final clean copy for the presidential assent after the voting on the expected issues of concern by the two chambers of the National Assembly would be out in August, 2025.

Kalu dropped the hints at a press conference by the House Committee on Constitution Review on Thursday.

It could be recalled that the committee on its inauguration, Monday, in Abuja, gave a 24-month timeline for the conclusion of the exercise.

At the press conference, Kalu who doubles as the chairman of the committee said: “We are pushing to ensure that in our activities, that in no distant time, the first draft of the work we are trying to do in the constitution will be ready.

“This will be subject to approval of the work done by the subcommittee. Let me mention that by our target, the first draft of the constitution will be out in August 2024.

“Second draft will be out in October 2024, we will commence zonal inputs from October 2024, we’ll keep collecting inputs from citizens from 14th October 2024 as we prepare for the last version or the last draft copy of the constitution.

“We are hoping that there will be a harmonization of the issues, on the 27th, 28th February 2025.

“We are hoping that during a technical working retreat that will take place in February 2025, the Senate and the House of Representatives documents will be harmonized.

“It is our desire that on the 17th of March 2025, we will have harmonized documents considered in the House. It is our believe that by April 2025, we will have the final copies of draft amendments produced.

“We are optimistic also that by 12th May 2025, we’ll have, the final clean copy of amendments’ bills agreed on.

“And we are looking at 22nd May 2025, as a time when we will have final report laid for consideration and voting.

“This is to say that members will be voting on the work we have done on this important date of 22nd May 2025.

“We are believing that around the 29th of May or 13th of June, knowing fully well what these important dates mean to Nigerians, we will expect the final concurrence of state assemblies secured.

“If it delays more than that, it will not go beyond August of 2025 because we believe that by August 2025, the president will receive the bills that will be presented to him for presidential assent. So, our targets are that transmission of bills to Mr President for assent will take place August 2025.

“And with this, we are sure that our target to get this job done in 24 months will be achieved if we send it to Mr President by August 2025 and hoping that by December we will have a constitution that’s fully amended.”

The Deputy Speaker also called for submission of memoranda from different interest groups, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Labour Unions, relevant institutions of government and the members of the general public to aid the committee’s work.

He said that the thematic areas included Federal Structure and Power Devolution; Local Government/Local Government Autonomy; Public Revenue, Fiscal Federation, and Revenue Allocation; Nigerian Police and Nigerian Security Architecture; Comprehensive Judicial Reforms; Electoral Reforms to strengthen INEC to deliver transparent, credible, free and fair elections; Socio-economic and cultural rights as contained in Chapter 2 of the

constitution and Traditional Institutions.

Other are Issues of Gender; Strengthening the Independence of oversight institutions and agencies created by the constitution or pursuant to an Act of the National Assembly; Residency and Indigene Provisions; Immunity; The National Assembly; Process of state creation and State access to mining.

“In exercise of the powers conferred on the Legislature by Sections 4, 8, and 9 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as Amended) and Order 20, Rule 30 of the Standing Orders of the House of Representatives (11th Edition) and the Legislative Agenda of the 10th House of Representatives, I am pleased to invite the Executive and Judicial bodies, State Governments, Women Groups, Academics, Civil Society Organizations, Labour Unions, Professional bodies, Ethnic Nationalities, Nigerians in the Diaspora, Diplomats and the general public, to submit memoranda or proposals for further alteration(s) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) on the following thematic areas: The Federal Structure and Power Devolution; Local Government/Local Government Autonomy; Public Revenue, Fiscal Federation, and Revenue Allocation; Nigerian Police and Nigerian Security Architecture; Comprehensive Judicial Reforms; Electoral Reforms to strengthen INEC to deliver transparent, credible, free and fair elections; Socio-economic and cultural rights as contained in Chapter 2 of the constitution; Traditional Institutions; Issues of Gender; Strengthening the Independence of oversight institutions and agencies created by the constitution or pursuant to an Act of the National Assembly; Residency and Indigene Provisions; Immunity; The National Assembly; Process of state creation; State access to mining”, he said.

The committee, however, extended the call for memoranda to “any other matter that will promote good governance and the welfare of all persons in our country on the principles of freedom, equality, and justice.”

London morgue charges late Joseph Wayas’ family N13.3m to sight corpse

A London morgue where the remains of former Senate President, late Dr Joseph Wayas, is kept, has collected the sum of £6,710, amounting to N13,366,320, from members of his family, before allowing them access to the body.

This was disclosed in a report by Justice Maurice Odey Eneji, Chairman of Joe Wayas’ Burial Fact Finding Committee.

The report is dated 27 February 2024.

The report said the morgue managers had insisted on the amount, representing cost of maintenance of the body and general charges for over two years that the body has been kept there.

The committee, made up of elders in the Cross River northern district, needed to ascertain that the body was available, and what state it was in.

Wayas’ daughter, based in Nottingham, UK, Ms Donna Wayas, and one Mrs Echiko Julie Odey, were the two individuals who had access to sight and ascertain the state of the body.

Late Wayas, born 21 May 1941, died on 30 November 2021 in a london hospital after a lingering sickness.

He was Senate President from 1979 to 1983.

Former governor of Cross River State, Ben Ayade, first managed his health condition, and when he died, the state government released N200 million for repatriation of the body and burial.

However, soon after, a family crisis ensued which delayed the funeral.

In the report dated February 27, Justice Eneji said the committee has been very proactive, meeting regularly and is committed to ensuring that the body is repatriated for the burial.

However, he said they were still in need of a further £60,478, that is, N120,934,992, and have launched a passionate appeal towards raising the amount.

“In line with burial committee’s agreement with Ms Donna Wayas, we need to raise and remit/transfer to Donna the sum of £60,478 to offset all outstanding indebtedness, inclusive of cost of repatriation of the corpse to Nigeria for burial.

“We also need to raise and refund the sum of £7,210 paid on our behalf to the morgue managers in London,” Justice Eneji added.

Meanwhile, members of the Fact Finding Committee have agreed that they must allow both the state government and National Assembly to play their parts.

“Both the state and federal governments may have committed funds for this purpose in the past but he (late Wayas) has not yet been buried.

“He is not in any way responsible for the circumstances leading to the delay of his burial, neither does the delay detract from what he was in, and for, Nigeria.

“I think that now that the complexities surrounding his death and burial have been unravelled, our statesman is entitled to, and should be given, the burial that befits his status by both the federal and state governments.

“I think that we should communicate officially to them that all the knots have been loosened and all is now set for the burial as soon as it is convenient for government,” key member of the committee, who did not wish to be named, said.

Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has assured citizens that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is aware of the hardships Nigerians are going through.

He urged them to the patient, assuring them of the government’s dedication to alleviating their suffering.

According to him, “President Bola Ahmad Tinubu directed us to tell you the Government is aware of the situation you are in, We will do anything possible to ease the suffering of Nigerians, be patient what you are going through is temporary.

“You must take it in good faith, as no human being has the power to change the situation either the good or the bad.”

He said the state government is committed to moving the state out of poverty through a series of economic environment programs.

Naira crisis: Why Tinubu govt moved against Binance – Onanuga

Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, has said that if not
stopped, cryptocurrency trading website, Binance will destroy the Nigerian
economy.

He said the website would do this by arbitrarily fixing
foreign exchange rate.

Onanuga said this when he appeared on Channels Television’s
Politics Today programme on Wednesday.

“We have saboteurs. Look at what Binance is doing to our
economy. That is why the government moved against Binance. Some people sit down
using the cyberspace to dictate even our exchange rate, hijacking the role of
the CBN.

“They just sit down and fix anything they like. It’s a
sabotage and we are trying to prevent that from happening henceforth.”

Onanuga further called on Nigerians to halt patronising the
parallel market for Forex rates, adding that the website of the apex bank is
the only legal platform.

“The parallel market is not the real gauge of Nigeria’s
economic health. The parallel market is an illegal market.

“I don’t even know why Nigerians and the media are feeding
on the parallel market. That is not where we should go; what’s the CBN rate? As
at Friday, the rate for the dollar was about N1600.”

Six arrested over murder of South African rapper AKA

Six suspects have been arrested over the murder of popular South African rapper, Kiernan Forbes, better known as AKA.

AKA was shot dead alongside his friend outside a restaurant in the coastal city of Durban in February 2023.

AKA and his best friend, Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motshoane, were shot dead at close range by two armed men while walking to their car.

However, given an update in a press briefing on Tuesday night, the KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, said the suspects would appear in court on Thursday.

In a viral clip on the internet, Mkhwanazi, a lieutenant-general, explained how the suspects were arrested and the roles they played in the rapper’s death.

“It was clear that AKA was monitored from the airport and Tibz was not the intended target in the murder on Florida Road in Durban.

“We know they were paid for this”, he said.

Hardship: Naira may exchange for N4000 against US dollar – Ozekhome

Amid the current economic hardship, a Senior Advocate of
Nigeria, SAN, Mike Ozekhome, has warned that the naira may exchange for N4000
against the United States, US, dollar before the end of 2024.

Ozekhome explained that there was nothing on ground to show
that the naira will improve against the dollar.

He disclosed this while appearing on Channels TV programme,
Politics Today on Tuesday.

He said: “Before the end of this year, if we are not
careful, the Naira may exchange for N4000 to the dollar because there is
nothing in place.

”If we are not careful we will get to the situation in
Ghana, where they were carrying cedis in baskets to the market to go and buy
things and put in their pockets.

”Why do BDCs sit under the trees and tables to control our
economy?”

We were intimidated, threatened not to embark on protest -NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) says it was intimidated
and threatened not to go ahead with its two-day nationwide protest.

The NLC had declared a two-day nationwide mass protest for
February 27 and 28, 2024, over the economic hardship being faced by Nigerians
since the removal of subsidy on petrol in May 2023.

On Tuesday morning, the protesters began their marches from
the Labour House in Abuja and the Ikeja under-bridge in Lagos, while chanting
solidarity songs and slogans.

Similar rallies were staged in state capitals across the
country.

In a communique issued at the end of its national executive
council (NEC) meeting on Tuesday, the NLC announced the suspension of the
second day of the protest, adding that its objectives were achieved on the
first day of the rallies.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, Joe Ajaero, NLC
president, said following its announcement of the commencement of the protests,
the congress was intimidated and harassed in a bid to prevent the street
marches.

“We were threatened with all manners of consequences that
would be meted on us if we went ahead,” he said.

 “We were, however,
not perturbed as lifting the heavy yoke of suffering upon Nigerian workers and
masses left us with no option than to press on.”

The NLC president said the congress has evidence from
Tuesday’s protest of the “importation of agents who were mobilised to the
protest routes and grounds to cause violence against the peaceful protest”.

“God is, however, always a step ahead of the enemies of the
workers and the Nigerian people. That was also one of the reasons we had to
restructure on the second day of the nationwide protest,” he added.

“You may have noticed that almost all the routes to our
office have been militarised this morning. It took a lot of time to access our
office. These are not things you expect from a democratic society.

 “We want to reiterate
that if the government fails to comply within the specified time frame, the NEC
will convene again to decide on the next line of action.

“The NLC remains steadfast in its commitment to defending
and promoting the interests of Nigerian workers and the downtrodden masses, who
will not succumb to intimidation.”

‘WE’LL NO LONGER MEET
WITH FG ON EVE OF ACTION’

The NLC president said while the congress will continue to
attend meetings with the federal government, it will no longer do so on the eve
of any of its actions.

 “Each time they
invite us for a meeting, we will attend and listen to them. You are aware we
held a meeting with the federal government on Sunday,” Ajaero said.

“But while that meeting was going on, they wrote a letter to
all the unions to come and undermine us. There is nothing they have not done to
subvert the NLC. But if we are invited for another meeting, we will still go
and listen.

 “However, henceforth,
the NLC will no longer be comfortable attending meetings on the eve of any
action. Nothing comes from such meetings than to delay us and démobilisé us so
we don’t carry out our action.

“This is our new resolve. They cannot call us for a meeting
when we have an action in two days and then keep us till late at night so we
will not come out.”

Naira instability: BRGIE announces establishment of Biafracoin

The Prime Minister Biafra Republic Government in Exile, Mazi Simon Ekpa, announced that Biafrans have voted to establish Biafra digital currency, known as Biafracoin, amid the Naira crisis.

The Finnish-based lawyer, Ekpa, disclosed this on Wednesday in a statement through his official X handle.

The adoption of Biafracoin comes following the recent establishment of the Biafra Digital Currency Act 04/2024, which empowers the government to provide digital currency to Biafrans through Biafra Coin.

According to him, the value of 1 Biafracoin is equal to 1 US Dollar.

He urged Biafrans to invest in Biafracion amid the continued volatility of the Naira against other currencies in the foreign exchange market.

Ekpa added that Biafracoin will be on the global stock exchange market and acceptable in all cryptocurrency transactions.

“The Biafra Republic government in Exile has adopted the establishment of Biafra Digital Currency Act 04/2024, which empowers the government to provide digital currency to Biafrans in Biafracoin. The value is 1 US dollar, equal to 1biafracoin.

“As the Nigerian Naira has crashed, we encourage Biafrans to start investing in the Biafracoin as soon as it is public. The Biafra coin will be on the stock exchange and will be globally acceptable in any cryptocurrency transactions”, he said.

Recall that, on Tuesday, the Naira depreciated to N1,615.94 per USD from N1,582.94 on Monday.

On February 1, BRGIE unveiled a voting portal with over three million Biafrans who have voted for the Biafra Referendum.

Tinubu not responsible for economic woes – Ambode

Former Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has said President Bola Tinubu is not the originator of the current economic challenges in Nigeria.

He said Nigerians need to face the current hardship and economic challenges frontally.

The former governor said this when he addressed attendees at the 2024 Leadership Colloquium and Award hosted by the Akinjide Adeosun Foundation (AAF) at Alliance Francaise in Lagos.

The ex-governor said citizens would continue the blame game if they do not understand the fundamentals of the problems facing the country.

“It has nothing to do with the singular person called Mr President; but if we don’t understand the fundamentals, we will start playing the blame games. We need to face our problems frontally,” he said.

“The major issue is that we are even tired of not fixing our issues. Now, we have found somebody that has decided in person of President Tinubu.

“Until we decide ourselves to say that we should unite for the common cause called Nigeria, the security issues will not go.

“We don’t have to wake up in the morning and talk ill of Nigeria. We get what we profess about Nigeria.”

FG to pay youth unemployment benefits, set up consumer credit program

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the
Economy, Wale Edun, on Monday disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has directed
the design of a Social Security unemployment program where unemployed Nigerian
youths will be paid.

The Minister disclosed this while briefing State House
correspondents at the end of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting presided
by President Tinubu at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja

According to him, “At this period of heightened food prices,
Mr. President has committed to doing all that can be done to assist in giving
purchasing power to the poorest and in that line, he has committed and
instructed that the Social Security unemployment program be devised,
particularly to cater for the youth, for the unemployed graduates, as well as
the society as a whole.

“So, we have coming, in the nearest future, an unemployment
benefit for the young unemployed, in particular.”

Similarly, Mr. Edun said there will be a consumer credit
scheme to alleviate the pains of economic adjustment.

He said, “Finally, all in the same line, to emphasize that
there is empathy and there is feeling for those who are less well off, or
feeling particularly the pains of this adjustment, there is coming a social
consumer credit programme.

“So, by making consumer credit available, of course, goods
become more affordable, the economy even gets a chance to revive faster,
because people have purchasing power that allows them to order goods,
products,” he stated.

Edun also spoke on the review carried out by the Special
Presidential panel on the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP), which
has submitted a preliminary report to the president.

He said that the president gave highlights to the Council
meeting noting that what was done was “a review of the existing mechanisms, a
review of the existing programmes, and where there have been successes, such as
the 400,000 beneficiaries of the Geep programme, and so on and so forth.”

He added: “Those have been identified and recognised. School
feeding programme is another example of relative success. And whilst there is
still some further work to be done, particularly, as regards availability of
the financial data, which is still being looked at, the interim report has been
submitted and a key recommendation of the panel was that, especially given the
heightened, limited household purchasing power at this time, rising prices,
particularly elevated food prices, it’s important to restart the programme.

“So, the direct payments to 12 million households comprising
60 million Nigerians is to resume immediately with the important proviso that
every beneficiary will be identified by their national identity number and the
bank verification number.

 “Therefore, payments
will be made into bank accounts or mobile money wallets. So, that whether it is
before or after, there is verification of the identity of beneficiaries.

“Each person that receives 25,000 Naira for a total of three
months will be identifiable, even after they have received the money, it will
be clear who it went to and when it went to them. And that is the big change
that has allowed mr. president to approve the restart of that direct payments
to beneficiaries programme.”

FX backlog: CBN releases $400m, $1.8bn outstanding

Olayemi Cardoso, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria
(CBN), says $400 million was paid on Tuesday to settle some outstanding foreign
exchange (FX) commitments.

Cardoso disclosed this during a press conference after
heading his first monetary policy committee (MPC) meeting of the apex bank.

“…and I can tell you, just today, we paid out $400 million
to those that have been so identified,” Cardoso said.

The economist said the CBN will only settle identified and
genuine requests, as it is not in the interest of the regulator to hold back
payment from those that have been identified.

 “In terms of the
backlog, we are committed in clearing the backlog of identified and genuine
requests that are pending,” he said.

With the settlement made on Tuesday, Cardoso said “we are
committed to doing further to those that are genuinely identified and proven
cases”.

Prior to the recent payment, CBN had disclosed on January
29, 2024, that $500 million had been released to various sectors to address the
backlog of verified FX transactions.

Also, on January 7, CBN said $61.64 million was disbursed to
foreign airlines through various banks.

Meanwhile, on February 5, Cardoso said he inherited a $7
billion FX backlog when he became CBN governor in September 2023, however, it
has dropped to $2.2 billion.

BREAKING: CBN raises interest rate to 22.75% to tackle rising inflation

The Central Bank of Nigeria has raised the monetary policy
rate, known as the interest rate, by 400 basis points to 22.75 per cent from
18.5 per cent.

The CBN Governor, Olayemi Cardoso disclosed this at the
293rd Meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee press briefing in Abuja.

He said the move was to ensure that the country’s soaring
inflation rate, which stood at 29.90 per cent in January, was moderated.

The bank also raised the Cash Reserve Ratio to 45 per cent
from 32.5 per cent.

“We expect that this will moderate in the short to medium
term. We intend to work closely with other organs of government to take the
fiscal side of the inflation, especially regarding insecurity”, he said.

“As far as CBN is concerned, we are moving to a very
aggressive regulatory environment”, he added, speaking on the implementation of
its policy.

He said the bank will continue to make the market more
liquid, warning that operators who are not willing to abide by regulations will
face the consequences.

The last time the MPC raised interest rates was in July.

MPC held its first Meeting since its appointment in
September with a move to tighten monetary policy measures.

Recall that the Chief Executive Officer of the Financial
Derivatives Company, Bismarck Rewane, said the Central Bank Monetary Policy
Committee will have no option but to tighten interest rates amid soaring
inflation and economic hardship.

FEC approves construction of Lagos-PH road, social security payments to vulnerable Nigerians

The federal executive council (FEC) has approved the
construction of the Lagos-Port Harcourt-Calabar highway to Messrs Hitech
Construction Africa.

The council gave the approval at its weekly meeting on
Monday, presided over by President Bola Tinubu.

The construction of the first phase of the road — made up of
47 kilometres — will begin in Lagos, the council said.

The FEC also approved immediate social security payments to
vulnerable households with national identity numbers (NINs) and bank
verification numbers (BVNs).

The council said the social security payments should be
extended to Nigerian certificate education (NCE) graduates and holders of
higher degrees.

In addition, the FEC approved the “urgent” establishment of
the consumer credit scheme.

The council directed Femi Gbajabiamila, chief of staff to
the president, to lead a committee to make the scheme a reality.

Other officials appointed to the panel include Abubakar
Atiku Bagudu, the minister of budget and economic planning; Lateef Fagbemi,
attorney-general of the federation; as well as Wale Edun, minister of finance
and coordinating minister of the economy.

The FEC approval of the consumer credit scheme comes amid
serious economic hardship caused by a series of policies recently implemented
by the federal government in efforts to restore stability in the nation’s
foreign exchange (FX) market and the general economy.

Aderemi Abdul-Bojela, executive chairman of United
Technologies Limited, had said the development of a consumer credit scheme
would drive growth in Nigeria’s manufacturing sector and improve its
contribution to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) by boosting
patronage of locally-made goods.

‘$10k for school fees, $5k for medical bills’ – CBN limits dollar purchase from BDCs

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has placed limits on the
foreign exchange (FX) sales by Bureau De Change (BDC) operators.

The apex disclosed the directive on February 23, 2024, in a
document titled ‘Revised Regulatory and Supervisory Guidelines for Bureau De
Change Operations in Nigeria’.

According to the circular, BDCs may sell foreign currency in
the equivalent of $4,000 and $5,000 for personal travel allowance (PTA) or
business travel allowance (BTA), respectively, to an individual once every six
months.

CBN said sale of foreign currencies to the intending
travellers would have to be accompanied with their bank verification number
(BVN) or tax identification number (TIN), duly completed e-form, valid international
passport, valid visa, as well as valid international return ticket.

In addition, for BTA, the apex bank said letter of request
from the corporate body stating the purpose of the visit addressed to the
processing BDC, as well as certificate of the business registration or
incorporation, must be submitted by customers.

Also, the CBN mandated that letter of invitation from the
customer’s overseas business partner and tax clearance certificate, be
presented by the customers.

“The amount of foreign currency sold and date of sale shall
be endorsed on the passport. A photocopy of the documents, forex endorsement
page and sales receipt shall be filed in a sequential order by the BDC,” CBN
said.

 ‘$5,000 FOR MEDICAL BILLS’

CBN also said BDCs may sell foreign currency up to the
equivalent of $5,000 to a customer for medical bills once a year.

Such bill, CBN said, shall be transferred from the BDC’s
domiciliary account with a Nigerian bank.

“It shall be paid directly to the hospital and supported by
valid visa, duly completed e-Form A, letter of reference from a specialist
doctor, or a specialist hospital in Nigeria, and valid international passport,”
the apex bank said.

Other necessary documents listed by the financial regulator
include valid air ticket, and letter issued by the overseas specialist doctor
stating the cost of treatment.

According to the apex bank, BDCs may sell foreign currency
up to the equivalent of $10,000 to a customer for school fees once a year.

“Such fee, which shall be transferred from the BDC’s
domiciliary account with a Nigerian bank, shall be paid directly to the school
and supported by the following documents: duly completed e-Form A, evidence of
admission/course programme, valid air ticket, and letter issued by the overseas
specialist doctor stating the cost of treatment, and school bill/invoice,” CBN
said.

“For post-graduate studies, photocopy of first degree
certificate or its equivalent/certified true copy of statement of result by the
awarding institution.

 “The CBN may review
the amounts and frequencies for sale of foreign exchange from time to time.”

A beneficiary of foreign currency sale may receive up to 25
percent of the foreign currency in cash, according to the CBN, and the
remaining 75 percent shall be transferred to the customer electronically (to
the customer’s Nigerian domiciliary account or prepaid travel card).

‘Release Nnamdi Kanu’ – Sunday Igboho begs Tinubu

Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Igboho, has urged President Bola Tinubu to order the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

Igboho also urged the Tinubu-led Federal Government to drop the treasonable charges preferred against Kanu.

In a video released on Monday, Igboho said releasing Kanu will allow him to attend to his failing health.

The freedom fighter stressed that the IPOB leader is an agitator fighting for the Southeast like himself who is agitating for the interest of the Southwest.

Igboho said: “Please release Nnamdi Kanu, stop politics. This guy did not do anything. Today is February 26, 2024.

“Release him, let him go and stay with his family. This guy is just fighting for his people in the South East like me that I am fighting for my people in Yorubaland, release him, let him go. Release Kanu. Please release him.”

EPL: Everton’s 10-point deduction reduced to six

Following an appeal, Everton’s 10-point deduction for
breaching the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules, PSR, has
been reduced to six.

On November 17, the Toffees were sanctioned by an
independent commission, after being found to have exceeded permitted losses by
£19.5m over an assessment period ending with the 2021/2022 season.

But the Merseyside club decided to appeal the decision at
the start of February.

The reduction of their punishment means that Everton will
now be on 25 points, moving them up to 15th and five points above the bottom
three.

“The club is also particularly pleased with the Appeal
Board’s decision to overturn the original Commission’s finding that the club
failed to act in utmost good faith.

“That decision, along with reducing the points deduction,
was an incredibly important point of principle for the club on appeal. The
Club, therefore, feels vindicated in pursuing its appeal,” an Everton statement
read in part.

Tinubu’s aide to Atiku: Your comparison is flawed… Argentina’s inflation rate hit 254% in January

Ortega Ogra, senior special assistant to President Bola
Tinubu on digital media and new media, has responded to a comparison of
economic reforms in Nigeria and Argentina, made by Abubakar Abubakar, former
vice-president.

Atiku had urged Tinubu to adopt the similar reforms of his
Argentine counterpart, Javier Milei.

He said Tinubu and Milei inherited a disoriented economy,
but each applied different measures for recovery.

Responding in a post
on X on Sunday, Ogra said Nigeria is not Argentina, and Tinubu is
not the president of Argentina, saying both countries can not be compared.

The presidential media aide accused Atiku of glorifying the
dire situation in the South American nation, saying Argentina’s economic
position is bleak.

Ogra said Tinubu is working hard to alleviate the country’s
economic difficulties and is committed to building a successful, stable, and
inclusive Nigeria.

“To those who may be enchanted, just like our former VP, by
the ‘Argentina Miracle’ he quoted, see below the January data of the situation
Alh. Atiku praised and says he would have put on Nigerians – had he been 7th
time lucky at his shot at the presidency which wasn’t successful,” the media
aide said.

 “I therefore advise a
closer look at the data—lest we forget that even a broken clock is right twice
a day.”

Ogra quoted Argentina’s inflation rate as rising to 254
percent in January 2024.

The media aide also cited the 2.8 percent recession
projected by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the country in 2024.

‘ECONOMIC SITUATION
IN ARGENTINA GLOOMY’

According to the brand strategist, the ‘gloomy situation’ is
exactly what Atiku “says he would have put on Nigerians – had he won”.

“Thank you, sir, for finally telling the Nigerian people
what your true plans were. Now we know – stopping salaries, a recession, >
250% inflation, no investment in social security or infrastructure was your
plan for Nigerians all along,” he said.

Ogra also appreciated Atiku’s attempt to contribute to the
economic discourse, “albeit through a remarkably flawed lens”.

“As for my principal – @officialABAT President Tinubu’s
administration, we will continue to roll up our sleeves, not to play the fiddle
as Rome burns, but to diligently work towards a prosperous, stable, and
inclusive Nigeria. Alhaji Atiku, your statement is perplexing,” he said.

 “Your critique of
President Tinubu’s administration, while glorifying Argentina’s dire situation,
is akin to applauding the captain of the Titanic for its speed, ignoring the
iceberg dead ahead I understand the allure of sensational headlines and the
temptation to draw parallels where none exist, but let’s be clear: Nigeria is
not Argentina, and President Tinubu is not President Milei.”

The presidential said Tinubu will continue to put the
wellbeing of the Nigerian population over theatrics of austerity disguised as
reform.

2024 Olympic qualifier: ‘Cameroon can’t stop Super Falcons’ – Ajibade

Super Falcons winger Rasheedat Ajibade said the players are determined to secure a place at the 2024 Olympic Games.

The West Africans have not made an appearance at the Olympics since the 2008 edition hosted by Beijing, China.

The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon are standing between the Super Falcons and a place in the final round of the qualifiers.

The two teams battled to a 0-0 draw in the first leg in Douala on Friday.

They will clash in the reverse fixture at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja, on Wednesday.

“Our objective remains getting the Olympic ticket. Personally, I have never played at the Olympics and that is the case with an overwhelming majority of players in this team,” Ajibade told thenff.com.

“We are determined to take this opportunity. We have another 90 minutes to make our claim to the final-round ticket, and we are focused on a positive result.”

From rags to riches: the goalkeeper who became the hero of the Nigerian national team

The Nigerians were considered one of the main contenders for the title at the African Cup of Nations, and have reason to be disappointed - they lost the decisive match to a team they had already defeated in the group stage, and they scored first against the Ivorians in the final. Nigeria traditionally brought a whole scattering of stars to the continental tournament, who did not really need any introductions, but a considerable share of success (objectively we can consider silver as such) was provided by the goalkeeper, who cannot be called a celebrity.

We recommend that fans of football betting visit uzbukmeker.com, and in this article we will tell you who Stanley Nwabali is and how he went to the top of his career.

When there are no prospects in sight

Football fans know that goalkeepers, unlike representatives of other roles, usually open up and reach their peak capabilities later, and can play longer. However, a promising goalkeeper must still prove himself in some way at an early age - even if not at the highest level.

In Stanley's case, it looked as if football would never become his profession. In 2019, Nwabali was already a football player, but at what level - he played in his native Nigeria, and not even in the national championship, but at the level of one of the smallest states in the country. To understand what level this is, we note that the guy had to earn extra money as a laborer, and sometimes perform without any salary at all, for amateurs. At the age of 22-23, people with such achievements often give up the game for millions, because they simply do not see prospects in it and do not find time for it.

And Nwabali was still playing at that time. And a miracle happened: somehow representatives of Enyimba, a club from the top division of Nigerian football, got to the provincial match. They liked the goalkeeper’s performance - especially considering that with such a background, the guy definitely wouldn’t ask for some huge salary. So Stanley became a full-fledged professional.

The average football fan has never heard of any Enyimba, and will say that this is still not at the level. So, Stanley was unable to gain a foothold there either. He, of course, was able to shine a little thanks to the team, considered a local giant, and never returned to the state championship, but his next teams solved modest problems - they simply tried not to get relegated.

Stanley's team, Katsina United, were relegated in 2022. A new challenge came from South Africa - the local club Chippa United became interested in the goalkeeper from Nigeria. Nwabali's next team is just as struggling, but the South African Premier League is considered the fourth strongest tournament on the continent, while the Nigerian Premier League is only the thirteenth.

The path to the national team

Making it into the Nigerian national team is a huge success for any football player, because the competition in this team is crazy. In fact, Nwabali made his debut for this team back in 2021, but only in a friendly match - and did not play for the team again.

It wasn't until 2024 that Stanley finally got a second chance - and played again in a friendly on the eve of Nigeria's start to the Africa Cup of Nations. Then he will become the main goalkeeper of the team in the tournament and reach the final with it.

How did it happen that an unknown goalkeeper suddenly played in such a reputable team? The answer comes from examining Nigeria's current national team roster, which is filled with stars playing in respected national championships. All African championships in total delegated exactly two players to the Nigerian ranks, and both were goalkeepers. There should also be a third goalkeeper in the application, but his reputation is also not impressive - he only plays in Cyprus.

That is, the answer to the question from the previous paragraph is very simple: the goalkeeper unit of the Nigerian national team, unlike other roles, does not shine with stars and recognizable names at all. Stanley, having only two matches in his international career before the start of the tournament, stood in the frame since he had no serious opponents.

Why a hero?

Someone will say that one player of any level will not spoil the Nigerian mess much - there are too many amazing attacking players there to pull the team to the top. Not the last people play in defense either - they can reliably cover the goalkeeper, so that it would be like in his time with Victor Valdes in Barcelona, when no one really knows whether the goalkeeper is really good.

But here are a few questions that break the theory that Stanley had nothing to do with the success of the Nigerian national team at the African Cup of Nations:

* if the defense plays well, why does Nwabali have 14 saves in the tournament, making him the second best goalkeeper of the draw after the Mauritanian Niasse;
* why it was Stanley, and not the famous goalkeepers of other tournament favorites, who collected as many as four clean sheets;
* How can a goalkeeper whose save rate is close to 91% be considered bad?

And finally: the stellar attack did not help the Nigerians defeat South Africa in the semi-finals - neither in regular time nor in the extra times. And it was the keeper who won the penalty shoot-out for his own team - having repelled two shots from the South Africans, Nwabali led the Nigerians to the final.

The transfer window has already closed in most European championships, but there is no doubt that Nwabali deserves little more than the fight to remain in the South African Premier League.

Why is Côte d'Ivoire's victory at the African Cup of Nations 2023 indescribably cool?

The African Cup of Nations 2023, which actually took place in January-February 2024, traditionally was not even noticed by many fans - and this despite about 250 representatives from only the top 5 European football leagues, with a lot of football players of a slightly more modest level, but still very strong. Another part of the fans, having learned that the hosts of the tournament were triumphant in Africa, as well as at the Asian Cup that was taking place in parallel, also kicked the joke - they say, everything is clear, they pulled the ears.

However, in fact, the victory of the Ivorians at the home of African Cup of Nations was not at all far-fetched - at least the draw was not remembered for loud refereeing scandals. If you like sports betting, go to mostbetlive.com/uz/, and we will try to prove that the triumph of the “Elephants” is very cool.

Indescribable support

Everyone who has watched the African Cup of Nations at least once notes that African fans look much more interesting than European ones. The stands during national team matches always look like there is a carnival going on there. Fans devote themselves entirely to supporting their own - they dress in colorful clothes and paint their faces in the colors of the national flag, and instead of drums, brass bands are quite common.

However, they root most clearly for their own people. Now let’s imagine how many fans in Africa can actually travel to another country for football. Take into account all the nuances: the poverty of the bulk of the population, the lack of developed (compared to Europe) transport links, and simply the substantial size of the continent with its vast distances.

It is natural that people in the stands cheered for Ivory Coast much more than for anyone else. For a completely neutral fan, this fact could already become an additional reason for sympathy towards the “Elephants”. But there is no need to attribute any special love for football corruption to Africans - the previous time the hosts (Egyptians) won the African Cup of Nations only in 2006.

Beautiful revenge

A pair of future finalists - Côte d'Ivoire and Nigeria - by the will of a blind lot that did not know the future, ended up in the same group of this African Cup of Nations drawing. The leader of the Nigerians, Trost-Ekong, scored the only goal against the opponents in the group stage match - this was enough for victory, and the “green-whites”, having defeated the third main favorite of the entire tournament, once again confirmed that they also have ambitions.

In the final there is a familiar sign and a familiar scenario: Trost-Ekong scores again and puts Nigeria ahead, plunging the stands into despair. The fans push their fans forward - and in the second half the hosts equalize the score. As time draws to a close, fans are slowly getting ready for extra time and their biggest fear is missing out right now. But Ivory Coast finds the strength to put the squeeze on the enemy without extra time. Isn't it beautiful?

Phoenix rising from the ashes

Even before the start of the tournament, Côte d'Ivoire was considered the third most likely winner - that is, a huge sensation, it seems, did not happen. But let’s look at it from a different angle: a number of solid (on paper) teams did not even make it past the group stage, and this despite the fact that third place (for four of the six “C” students) gave them a ticket to the playoffs. The ranks of the favorites will thin out even more in the knockout matches. However, the Ivorians were extremely close to not even making it to the 1/8 finals!

We defeated Guinea-Bissau – it seemed natural. Losing minimally to Nigeria is not a disgrace; the opponent is not a weak one. But no one understood what it was in the last round, when the “Elephants” scored 0:4 against another Guinea, Equatorial Guinea. Three points and a noticeable negative goal difference – how do you like the performance in the group from one of the African Cup of Nations favorites? This is what makes the final triumph of Ivory Coast a sensation.

We hope that in Côte d'Ivoire they have not forgotten the feat of Mozambique, which managed to make a comeback in the last round and draw with Ghana, which was leading 2:0 - otherwise this whole fairy tale would not have happened. Thanks to the disgraceful performance of the other favorites, the Ghanaians (third place with two points), the Ivorians jumped on the last carriage of the outgoing playoff train.

When horses are changed at the crossing

Head coach Jean-Louis Gasset selected the squad and took the team to the African Cup of Nations. After a crushing defeat from Equatorial Guinea, the federation did not wait for the results of matches in other groups and dismissed the coach. However, Ivory Coast miraculously crawled into the 1/8.

In a situation where the team immediately needed at least some kind of coach, the federation relied on Emers Fae. The former player of this team had absolutely no coaching experience before. Was it worth expecting that the half-dead team, which had barely made it out of the group and survived the leapfrog of its mentors, would be much delayed in the draw? And they won the cup!

A symbol of not giving up

Until 2021, according to his passport, Sebastien Romain Teddy Haller was French, not Ivorian. The African team managed to persuade the then Ajax player to play for them, promising to make it to the Qatar World Cup with such a strengthened squad. Failed.

Haller then moved to Borussia for a promotion, and it’s not a fact that he didn’t regret his choice - what if, with such a status, France would have called. But soon he had no time for regrets - the football player was diagnosed with cancer, and his career basically faded into the background. He was lucky: the disease was detected early, the doctors completed their task, and the player returned to the field.

But Sebastien Haller still might not have gone to the African Cup of Nations, because before the tournament he was injured and did not have time to recover. Gasse decided to include the guy in the application, hoping that he would “come to life” before the elimination fights. The coach himself ultimately did not make it to the playoffs, but his ward lived up to expectations and showed his best side - he scored the only goal against the Congolese in the semi-finals and scored the decisive one at the end of the final match. What if he hadn’t arrived...?

So the victory of Ivory Coast is a drama worthy of being staged in the theater.

Biafra civil war: You’re a genocidist – IPOB fires back at Gowon

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Sunday accused former Military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retired) of being a “genocidist.”

IPOB’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, accused Gowon of leading the second bloodiest genocide after the Israeli Holocaust against Igbos.

Powerful was reacting to Gowon’s latest comment on the Biafra civil war.

After a meeting with President Bola Tinubu, the former Military Head of State had disclosed how he was accused of being unable to prosecute the Biafra civil war because he was too slow.

Reacting, Powerful declared that the current generation of Igbos would actualize Biafra independence.

A statement by Powerful reads partly: “The attention of the global family and movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) ably led by the great and indefatigable leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has been drawn to the horrible but true confession of starting the genocidal war against Biafra by the former Military Head of State of Nigeria, Major General Yakubu Gowon.

“The genocidist Yakubu Gowon led the second bloodiest genocide after the Israeli Holocaust against Biafrans between 1967 and 1970.

“Recently, during a solidarity visit to President Tinubu, the genocidist, Yakubu Gowon, openly confessed to starting the genocidal war that they call a civil war against Ndigbo without shame.

“He equally confirmed that he was criticized for starting that war, yet he went ahead to commit the deadly genocide against the Biafra Nation.

“As other genocidists in Nigeria, Gowon is gallivanting and glorifying himself for massacring millions of Biafran men, women, and children. His home state is under the occupation of terrorists and bandits today, but that is not his concern. The genocide he masterminded against Biafrans has visited his people. Fulani bandits and terrorists have taken over and renamed some of the villages in the Tiv nation while Gowon is watching helplessly like the slave that he is. God has preserved Gowon to witness the same genocide he perpetrated against Biafrans.

“Fortunately, no inch of Biafran land was taken over by the Nigerian State during the bloody civil war. But Yakubu Gowon and his people have already lost some areas of their own land to Fulani conquerors and jihadists. And if care is not taken, the entire Middle Belt will be conquered by the Sokoto Fulani Caliphate. We don’t wish that happens because of the innocent people of the Middle Belt even though we despise the unrepentant Genocidist Gowon and his fellow Nigerianists’ actions against Biafrans.

“We commend our eternal leader, Chief Dim, Odumegwu Ojukwu whether dead or alive, and other Biafra heroes and heroines for resisting the bloody genocide against Biafrans led by the genocidist, Gowon. By the special grace of Eze Chukwu Okike Abiama, this generation of Biafrans will finish the struggle and restore Biafra Independence. There is nothing people like war criminal Gen. Yakubu Gowon and company can do about it.”

Edo guber: They want to impeach me – Shaibu cries out

Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, has said he is worried about a new scheme to remove him from office.

He said the scheme was intensified after he was elected as a factional candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the upcoming governorship election.

Shaibu, the deputy governor of the state, said this at a press conference in Abuja on Saturday.

The returning officer in the PDP governorship primary and Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal had on Thursday announced Asue Ighodalo as the winner of the delegate election, having polled a total of 577 votes.

However, in the parallel primaries that took place at the Benin residence of the Deputy Governor, the returning officer, Bartholomew Moses, declared Shaibu the winner, saying he won “with over 300 votes.”

“Even as we speak, my team has been calling me that, ‘Look at what these people are doing. They are saying they are going to impeach you; that you have gotten too far.’ They are threatening to impeach me,” he said.

“And I said, well, if fighting for my rights and all of us collectively fighting for my rights as in the constitution, triggers impeachment, so be it, because fighting for my rights and saying I must contest the election is my constitutional rights and cannot be taken by anybody.

“So if constitutional right is why they will now trigger impeachment, the courts are there; they will interpret it,” he said.

Troops recover 1 million litres of stolen crude oil in Rivers

Troops of the Nigerian Army have seized about one million litres of crude oil believed to have been stolen from wellheads in Rivers State.

Brig.-Gen. Eddie Effiong, Commander, 6 Division Garrison, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, disclosed this on Saturday when he led journalists on a tour of illegal bunkering sites in Odagwa community in Etche, Rivers State.

He said that troops discovered the crude oil stored in eight large reservoirs following a tip-off about the operation of illegal refineries in a dense forest in the area.

“The tip-off indicated that after we had destroyed an illegal refinery around the area previously, the oil thieves regrouped and re-established another site opposite the former location.

“We found eight reservoirs and five coking pots at the new site, with each reservoir having a minimum of 100,000 litres of stolen crude oil.

“Altogether, the reservoirs at the site hold no less than one million litres of stolen crude oil, awaiting to be refined into diesel,’’ he said.

Effiong added that the division had initiated measures to curb all illegal refining operations in its four coverage states of Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers.

“We will keep trailing the oil thieves and continue to destroy their illegal refining sites regardless of how difficult the terrain might be.

“We are also talking to them through their village heads and youth leaders and urging them to renounce their illegal activities to pursue legitimate businesses.

“The nation’s economy heavily relies on crude oil; the more they engage in this illegal activity, the more it impacts negatively on the economy and on all of us,’’ he stressed.

Effiong noted that current economic hardship in the country should not be an excuse for involvement in crime and in criminal activities.

He noted also that the nation was already bearing the brunt of oil theft, and continued indulgence in such acts would exacerbate the situation.

“We urge those involved in these illegal activities to desist immediately and seek lawful means of livelihood,’’ he advised.

Nigeria-Biafra War: Moment Gowon was ambushed to speak in Hausa (VIDEO)

A video currently circulating on the Internet has shown how
former military Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, was ambushed and asked to speak in
Hausa when he wanted to talk about the Nigeria-Biafra Civil War.

“Wait a minute, who told you I am going to do it in Hausa?
Oh my goodness, look, for almost 80 years, I have been always speaking mostly
in English… This is an ambush. This is a coup. No, No…. My Hausa is not good
enough to say it in Hausa,” Gowon objected.

Gowon was addressing newsmen after he visited President Bola
Tinubu at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday.

The former military ruler told Tinubu not to be worried
about the criticisms of Nigerians on his performance since he assumed office in
May 2023.

“At least, if I remember, I was told that I was too slow,
fighting the war and that probably Nigeria would not make it and that we should
seek for discussion. Well, did we do it or not? They probably did not know the
problem on the ground there,” he said.
