‘65m Nigerians spend $15 daily on betting’ — FG proposes gaming industry tax scheme

 



Bello Maigari, executive secretary of the National Lottery
Trust Fund (NLTF), says Nigerians spend billions of dollars on betting each
year, despite economic hardship.



Maigari disclosed this at the 2nd edition of the biennial
national gaming conference held on Tuesday in Lagos.



The conference was organised by the National Lottery
Regulatory Commission (NLRC).



Speaking at the event, Maigari said the online betting
sector has seen exponential growth.





"It is not out of place to look at some statistics that
underscore the significance of this industry and situate its centrality in
promoting the renewed hope agenda of this Administration," he said.



"As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, the
global online betting market was estimated to be worth over $50 billion, and it
has continued to grow significantly since then.



"In Nigeria, the online betting sector has seen
exponential growth, with millions of citizens engaging in various forms of
online gaming and betting.





"With a population of over 200 million people and the
largest betting market in Africa, our country is making giant strides in the
world of online sports betting.



"Currently, there are over 65 million Nigerians
actively engaging in this activity, spending 15 USD on average every day. It is
on record, each day, 14 million bet takes and payments are made online in our
country."



Maigari said revenue from the online betting sector alone is
projected to reach over $256 million this year.



"It is expected to experience an annual growth rate of
nearly 10% to reach more than 366 million USD by 2027," he said.



TAXING THE GAMING AND BETTING INDUSTRY



Maigari also suggested that the federal government should
create a framework that can encourage the betting industry to contribute taxes
in the country.



"Moreover, leveraging the gaming and betting industry
as a tax contributor can help create a level playing field for both local and
international operators," he said.



"By establishing clear and equitable tax regulations,
we can encourage foreign players to operate within our regulatory framework,
ensuring that we benefit from their presence whilst safeguarding our citizens.



"The importance for taxation of this sector cannot be
over-emphasized."



Maigari added that the NLTF has used its proceeds to
contribute to important projects for the development of the country and the
wellbeing of the population, particularly in health, education, water and
sanitation, humanitarian aid and natural disaster mitigation and management.







 

Supplementary Budget: Tinubu to spend N6.9bn on vehicles, First Lady’s Office to get N1.5bn cars

 




President Bola Tinubu has proposed to spend over N6.9
billion on procurement of vehicles for the State House, with the Office of the
First Lady getting N1.5 billion for new cars.



 



This is contained in the Supplementary Budget Tinubu sent to
the National Assembly for approval.



 



It would be recalled that the President sent a N2.17
trillion Supplementary Budget to the National Assembly for approval.



 



The government plans to send N2.9 billion on Sport Utility
Vehicles, SUVs, for the Presidential Villa and another N2.9 billion on
replacing the cars in the pool.



 





This proposed expenditure is coming at a time when Nigerians
are still protesting the decision of the National Assembly to procure N75
billion worth of vehicles.



 



Some young persons had held protests in Lagos and Abuja over
the planned spending by the lawmakers at a time when Nigerians are facing a
tough economic situation.



 



In the proposed supplementary budget, the government is
planning to spend N28 billion on the State House. In addition, the government
is planning to spend N12.5 billion on the Presidential a6ir Fleet.

Rivers: Wike demanded 25% of allocations, N2b from palliative money – Activist alleges

 




A lawyer, activist and Pan-Africanist, Chetam Thierry Nwala
has alleged that the political unrest in Rivers State followed unfulfillable
demands by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike.



 



The activist, who soike on Arise Television on Tuesday,
alleged that the refusal of Governor Siminalayi Fubara to remit 25 per cent of
the state’s allocation to Wike, his immediate predecessor, caused the ongoing
face-off.



 



He alleged that Wike demanded that 25 per cent of all
allocations coming into the state should be given to him.



 



Nwala also alleged that Wike demanded N2 billion from the N5
billion recently disbursed by the Federal Government to the states as part of
palliatives to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal.



 





According to the Pan-Africanist, most of the governor’s
aides, including commissioners and Chief Security Officer, were appointed by
the FCT Minister.



 



He said, “Wike demanded 25% of Rivers State allocations.
From what we heard, the governor even offered to give him 10%. This is what is
happening in our state.



 



“Not just that, we had a situation where Wike appointed
almost all the commissioners, appointed a Chief Security Officer for the
governor. These are personal things that should be of concern to the governor.
These are things that should make him revolt.



 



“We have seen a situation where even the commissioners
appointed by Wike disrespect the governor. Naturally, everybody will revolt.
You don’t expect the governor to stick to any agreement made before the
election.



 



“If the governor continues with the agenda Wike has for
Rivers State, the state will not make progress. Wike took Rivers State 10 years
backwards.



 



“Let me also shock you, out of the N5 billion palliative
money that was sent to Rivers State, Wike demanded N2 billion from it. This is
why some of us commend his (Fubara) moves”.



 



Recall that the Rivers State House of Assembly on Monday,
attempted to impeach the governor, causing unrest in the state.



 



The assembly complex was set ablaze on Sunday night
following reported moves to impeach the governor.



 



There are reports that the impeachment plot was orchestrated
by the FCT Minister who is said to be bent on unseating the governor over yet
to be disclosed reasons.

Tinubu has intervened in Rivers crisis – Bauchi gov

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State on Tuesday disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has intervened in the rift between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike and Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara.




Mohammed disclosed that Tinubu doused the political tension in Rivers State.




He stated this while briefing State House Correspondents after a meeting of the National Police Council presided over by Tinubu at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.




Mohammed said Tinubu is discussing with Wike and Fubara, adding that it appeared there would be peace with his intervention.




According to Mohammed: “President Tinubu has shown that he is President for PDP and APC. We are going to work with him.”




Fubara and Wike met at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday morning.




The duo reportedly fell out less than six months after the succession.




Wike’s loyalists in the Rivers House of Assembly had moved to impeach Fubara but the governor resisted.

Kogi: Yahaya Bello accepts Appeal Court verdict affirming Natasha Akpoti as elected lawmaker

In a surprising turn of events, the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello has said he accepts the verdict of the Appeal Court, which upheld the election of Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan as the duly elected Senatorial candidate of her constituency.




Akpoti-Uduaghan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) hails from Kogi Central Senatorial District.




Bello, who participated in the National Police Council meeting which confirmed Kayode Egbetokun as substantive Inspector General of Police on Tuesday, at the Presidential Villa Abuja, described Natasha as his sister.




He said it was necessary for him to accept the court verdict to avoid a breakdown of law and order in the state.

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP),
says he will not stop seeking elective office until he “dismantles the crime
scene” in Nigeria.



 



Obi spoke on Saturday during an event to celebrate Black
History Month at Oxford University.



 



Obi said he left a huge financial investment to join
politics and contest for the 2003 Anambra governorship election.



 



The former Anambra governor said despite his financial loss,
he has a sense of fulfilment that he joined politics to change certain things.








“Looking back now, as difficult as it is and with all the
things I have lost, I have a sense of fulfilment that at least I can say I
change this and change that,” he said.



 



“As I was coming here today somebody asked me how do you
feel about contesting the election for the office of the president and what has
happened.



 



“I said let me tell you, this is just the beginning, we
won’t stop until we dismantle that crime scene. That is basically how I feel.



 



“For me, we need to all come together to make Africa,
including Nigeria, work and collectively, the black world.”



 



Obi said Africa is the “most unexplored and unproductive”
continent in the world.



 



He added that what is lacking in the development of Africa
is leadership, noting the continent can be turned around within a small space
of time.



 



Asked to react to the recent supreme court judgement on his
appeal, the LP presidential candidate declined to comment, saying he would
write down his thoughts later.
