PDP crisis: Atiku’s running mate needs Wike’s support – Okowa’s camp

  The camp of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate’s running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa, has said the Delta State governor would work with his Rivers State counterpart, Nyesom Wike.   Reports have it that Wike and some PDP chieftains are aggrieved over the choice of Okowa as the party’s presidential running mate.   Following his emergence, the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, constituted a committee to select his running mate.   The committee had picked Wike, who came second during the PDP presidential primary election in Abuja.   But, Atiku had ignored the committee’s recommendation and opted for Okowa as his running mate.   Atiku’s decision is believed to have aggrieved Wike and other party chieftains.   However, the Delta State Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, assured that Okowa needs Wike’s support ahead of the 2023 presidential election.   Aniagwu assured that Okowa would work with other leaders in the south to get votes for the PDP.   The Commissioner said, “Okowa will work with other leaders in the south and across the country to galvanize the voters. He (Okowa) believes that to have an inroad in Rivers State, for example, he will need leaders led by Wike to get the votes.   “Okowa will work with Wike very well. Okowa will also reach out to our brothers and sisters in the South-West and in the South-East, which is already happening. The challenge at hand is not a one-man show.   “Beyond members of our party, Nigerians believe that the PDP should get it right as the major option for the people ahead of the 2023 general election.”

EPL: Man City owners to buy new club

Manchester City’s owners are set to complete a deal to buy Italian club Palermo, according to Goal. The City Football Group (CFG) have held discussions with the Serie B club about becoming the 11th club in their portfolio. Palermo went bankrupt in 2019, before being reformed as a phoenix club in the fourth-tier of Italian football. Despite playing in Serie C, the club attracted 31,000 spectators for their end-of-season play-off matches in May and June. The purchase of 80 percent of the club shares will cost between €12 million and €13 million. Manchester City are the flagship club in the group, which has 11 teams on four continents including MLS side New York City FC. CFG’s other clubs are Girona in Spain, Troyes in France and Lommel in Belgium. They also own Australian club Melbourne City, Montevideo City Torque in Uruguay, Mumbai City in India and Sichuan Jiuniu in China as well as being a minority shareholder of Japanese club Yokohama F. Marinos.

Mentally-ill man kills youth seeking N20,000 bounty in Delta

  A youth in his early 20s, Chukwunonso Odo, has been stabbed to death by a mentally-ill man, Wisdom Solomon, in Asaba, Delta State. It was gathered that the incident occurred on Tuesday on Nnebisi Road by Umuagu Quarters. An eyewitness told our correspondent that the suspect had a fight with his father, who sustained injuries and declared him wanted after he fled the house. “So, the father placed a N20,000 bounty on him for anybody who would catch him. “Immediately, people went after him, including Chukwunonso. The victim caught him. Unknown to Chukwunonso, the suspect had a knife with him and he was stabbed,” the source said. Another resident said, “I quickly rushed to the scene and saw Chukwunonso on the ground in a pool of blood; we carried him inside a tricycle to a hospital. “On arrival at the hospital, the doctor confirmed him dead and he was moved to a mortuary.” The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the killing, adding that the suspect could not be arrested. He said, “The suspect is mentally ill. How can we arrest a mad man? He ran away after stabbing the victim.”
