A former Senator, Shehu Sani, has thrown his weight behind the call for personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to bear firearms.
However, he opined that only those on the federal highways outside the city should be trained and given firearms.
Recall that the Federal Road Safety Corps has harped on the need for its personnel to bear firearms in discharging their duties, considering the level of security challenges across the country.
The Corps Marshal, Dauda Biu, made this call on Saturday while inaugurating 1,762 corps personnel who just concluded their four-month introductory course at the Nigerian Army Training Centre (NATRAC), Kontagora, Niger.
Biu, who was represented by Shehu Zaki, a Deputy Corps Marshal, said that the measure would ensure adequate protection for the personnel who were often attacked in the course of duty by some road users or suspected criminals who take advantage of the security challenges in the country.
And in reaction, the former Kaduna central district Senator said, “I support that Federal Road Safety Corps should bear arms,” he wrote on X.
“But only for those working on the federal highways outside the cities,” he added.
