AFCON 2021: Egypt qualify for semi-final after beating Morocco

  Egypt on Sunday qualified for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final after beating Morocco 2-1 in Cameroon.   The AFCON quarter-final match ended in a 1-0 win at half-time in favour of Morocco, thanks to Sofiane Boufal’s penalty.   However, a second-half goal from Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah ensured Egypt played a 1-1 draw with Morocco after 90 minutes.   But Trezeguet scored for Egypt in the first half of extra time to give his side a 2-1 lead.   Both teams were unable to score in the second half of extra-time as the match eventually ended 2-1 after 120 minutes.   The Pharaohs are now one of the favourite teams to win the 2021 AFCON.

  Bauchi State, Governor, Bala Mohammed, has said he told former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, to allow him contest the presidency because he is old and fatigued with Nigeria.   He said this in his speech while receiving the report of a Contact and Consultation Committee which he established for his presidential ambition which held on Friday at the Old Banquet Hall of the Government House, Bauchi.   The Committee, headed by Senator Adamu Gumba, which was inaugurated 15th August, 2021, visited 16 northern states where it interacted with various stakeholders in those states.   Mohammed said, “I am aware that even in Bauchi, people are divided, my elder brother, Bala Hadith, had the courage to tell me that people of Bauchi don’t want me to go to the center and I appreciate him. This is because this is the opinion of Bauchi which is the appreciation of what we are doing together. Bauchi can be better if I’m at the center.   “But certainly, we have to manage the two together (Bauchi and the Presidential campaign). I told my younger brother and my colleague (deputy governor) that he should not be happy to send me forth so that he will take over the governorship, I will do the two together.   “One of my brothers, a formidable and astute politician, Matawalle Sokoto (Aminu Tambuwal) did it before, so we are going to also test it. And I will not give (the governorship seat) to hold forth, such a big man, he will not give me back when I come back, but if he will give me, I will give it to him.   “There is no need for us to be greedy; of course, my presidency will not cause division. You can see that at the heat of the time that my elder brother, Malam Adamu was going round, we invited our elder statesman, the one that we respect so much, the Waziri Adamawa (Atiku Abubakar), we named a road after him.   “We invited him to Bauchi and we interacted and I told him that in this game, I know he’s the most senior, he’s very qualified but because of his age and fatigue that he has suffered so much for Nigeria, he should allow his younger brother to be his spare tyre not to take over just like that. But if Nigerians prefer him, I will support him. I am not too desperate but he should know that Nigerians like me too. And whatever he wants, I will do it for him, so this is our agreement, he has the highest respect from me.”   The former minister of the Federal Capital Territory said that Nigerians are disillusioned and in poverty adding that the selection process is one of the problems in the country. “We have a lot of insecurity, we have a lot of poverty, people are disillusioned, governance has never been like before, even the centre is confused because our leadership recruitment is very poor. And today, for some of us that know, we have been trained in this job as federalists, we know the civil service, we know the bureaucracy, we know the institutions of the federal government and the states, we know the parliament, we know the politicians and the politics, so we should be given the opportunity.   “Reward system has never been so poor, politics is not the winner takes all. Even before we come in, we will make sure that there is complete redistribution of the national resources. There must be equitable distribution; nepotism should be done away with. We have so many positions other than the presidency which will make all the federating entities to be happy.   “All the presidential aspirants from all the sections of the country are eminently qualified, so we should be left to discuss with each other. At this moment, we should be most concerned with our unity and the economics of the country.”   “It will not just be the group of Bala Mohammed, we will change the narrative, we will make sure we get the best and those people that that will be going back to their micro-constituencies to drop something. Not those kind of people we have today that are sitting in Abuja, we don’t see them. We have to change the governance, the selection, the distribution, the mannerism and the reward system, this is how we need to do it.   “I am happy that I see so many people joining the PDP because that is where the hope is. We should be able to come into politics with hindsight of mandate from the people,” he stated.

Tunisia coach Mondher Kebaier reacted to falling behind by taking off Haddadi at half-time and bringing on Ali Maaloul, who plays his club football with African giants Al Ahly of Egypt. Saudi Arabia-based Naim Sliti was also introduced for the second half in place of Anis Ben Slimane on the right side of midfield. As Tunisia pushed forward in pursuit of an equaliser they were exposed at the back early in the second half, but unmarked Blati Toure fired straight at Ben Said.  Maaloul is not only among the most polished left-backs in Africa, but also a set-piece expert and Koffi did well to push away a low free-kick from the Tunisian at the expense of a corner.

Senator petitions IGP as police torture man to death

‘Lagosians know what they’ll be missing if we don’t continue’ — Sanwo-Olu speaks on second term

  Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, says Lagosians will know what they will be missing if his administration is not allowed a second term.   Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday, Sanwo-Olu said his government is trying to do its best and meet the expectations of citizens and also finish his first term “strong”.   He said when the time comes, he would ask questions, consult stakeholders on what they want and the way forward.   “As you speak, we have done about two-thirds of our time; about 66.7 percent because we count it every day. The field is not open yet but for me, it is about ensuring that these four years that I have, I promise my citizens to put every bit of my sweat into it,” Sanwo-Olu said.    “I will ask, I will consult. Citizens, how do you see it? These are some of the things; that’s how you get it down. Try and finish very strong. You know when it is time for us to do all the politicking we will do it.   “I think we are doing a very good job if I dare say so. I think the citizens know what it is they will be missing if they don’t let us continue to wrap up all the things we are doing.”   “OUR PLAN FOR TRANSPORTATION IN 2022”   On his administration’s plan on metro rail, Sanwo-Olu said the vision of his government is to reduce traffic and the time commuters spend on the road.   “Time is money and we need to move millions of people in Lagos from one corridor to another. The vision is to reduce travel time and gridlock on the road,” he said.   “And be able to do a better journey planning where you can predict pretty much this journey will take you 25 minutes, 30 minutes, not the one you get lost on the road that we have now and you are there for 2, 3 hours.   Asked much will the trains cost the average Lagosians, he replied: “I don’t think citizens will be breaking their backs. It will be affordable; N200, N250. It probably won’t be more than that.    “I really cannot say because the fare structure will be where you are joining to where you are hopping off. Typically, it won’t be more than what you are running on your BRT lines today. It certainly cannot be more than that. For it to be accessible, affordability is critical for people to make it a better option.   “Now, it is quicker instead of you staying one hour on the road, it’s going to take you 20 minutes which comes with a lot of benefits. Affordability is critical, it’s not going to be in the thousands.   “At best, if our operators say that ‘No, Mr Governor, it is more expensive’. We can do a financing metrics… I will give you a longer tenure time to be able to defray your cost but keep it affordable for our citizens.”   He also said the state will start testing the blue rail lines this year.    “And by the grace of God, we will also be completing the blue line. What Lagosians are expecting from us will be actively working with trains — two rail lines by the first quarter of this year.   “We would have started testing by this year. If we don’t bring passengers on, it will be for security reasons. The trains will be on track by the 4th quarter, the terminal stations will be ready by the fourth quarter.    “It will probably be like things around communication that we are trying to test. We will probably be doing some test run by the end of this quarter.”

Governor Muhammad Badaru Abubakar of Jigawa State has expressed his condolence to the families of police operatives who were killed by kidnappers at Kwalam town in the Taura Local Government Area of the state. APC says primary election in Ekiti not postponed amid calls for cancellation

  The Ekiti state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) says the governorship primary election in the state has not been postponed.   The state primary election is slated for today.   Earlier in the day, Opeyemi Bamidele, senator representing Ekiti central, asked the APC to cancel the primary election, alleging irregularities, high-handedness, intimidation, and state-induced violence characterising the exercise.   Bamidele alleged that those on the election committee are aides of Kayode Fayemi, the governor, who are working to ensure that Biodun Oyebanji, a governorship aspirant, gets the party’s ticket. Oyebanji is believed to be backed by Fayemi and Niyi Adebayo, minister of trade.   TheCable had also reported that seven governorship aspirants on the platform of the APC withdrew from the primary election over the allegation that the committee is made up of Fayemi’s loyalists.   In a statement, Victor Olabimtan, secretary of the primary election committee, said the exercise will take place as scheduled in all the 177 wards of the state.   The committee assured the public of a level-playing field for all aspirants.   “The Ekiti State APC governorship primary election Committee wishes to assure the general public that a level playing field that will guarantee fairness, openness and transparency has been adopted by the Committee,” the statement reads.   “It is an incontrovertible fact that every member of the appointed Electoral Officers for today’s primary election is a bonafide member of Ekiti State APC.   “You will recall that during the stakeholders’ meeting between the Committee, aspirants and others yesterday, this issue was raised and exhaustively discussed, and to reinforce confidence in the process, it was agreed that each aspirant should nominate 20 people each to be part of the process. All the aspirants took advantage of this window of opportunity and submitted the list of their nominated electoral officers. “All the submitted lists have been added to the existing arrangement, assigned into various wards and local governments. They have all been incorporated.”   The committee called on APC members in the state to go to their wards and exercise their voting rights “without fear or intimidation”.   “The adopted option A4 is the most transparent form of election,” it added.

ECOWAS summons extraordinary summit on Burkina Faso

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced that an extraordinary summit will be held in the coming days to examine the situation following the military coup in Burkina Faso. “The ECOWAS notes that, despite calls from the regional and international community for calm and respect for constitutional legality, the situation in Burkina Faso is characterized by a military coup this Monday, January 24, 2022, following the resignation of the President Roch Marc Christian Kabore, obtained under threat, intimidation and pressure from the military after two days of mutiny,” the statement said.   The ECOWAS also “strongly condemned this coup by the military which marks a major democratic setback for Burkina Faso”. In a press release on Tuesday, the South African Government said it agrees with the ECOWAS that soldiers should return to barracks and utilise dialogue with the authorities to resolve all problems. “There can never be a military solution to issues of this nature, dialogue and negotiation are the only means of resolving conflict and arriving at lasting resolutions”, said the statement. Burkina Faso soldiers said Monday on national television that they had seized power and put an end to the functions of President Roch Kabore. The Patriotic Movement for Safeguard and Restoration (MPSR) took power, led by Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba. Burkina Faso’s air borders were reopened on Tuesday, the MPSR announced in a statement on Burkina Faso’s national television. Hundreds of demonstrators gathered at Place de la Nation in Ouagadougou on Tuesday in support of the coup. One demonstrator said he came out to show his support for the military. However, they were dispersed when they tried to move towards the Camp of Guillaume Ouedraogo in the city centre.

Osinbajo seeks benchmark in judiciary, legislators’ salaries

The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, on Tuesday in Abuja sought for creation of a benchmark in the salaries of judicial officers and legislators in order to put a permanent rest to the perennial disputes between the two arms of government. Osinbajo remarked that the earnings of the judicial officers in Nigeria should be enhanced so that they can retire to “decent homes of their own” after service. He spoke at the 2022 Justice Sector Summit tagged: Devising Practical Solutions Towards Improved Performance, Enhanced Accountability and Independence in the Justice Sector, organized by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and some stakeholders. The Vice President said that the system in the welfare conditions of the judicial officers must be strengthened to make them live above board and to also attract the best brains onto the bench. He challenged the bar to use the summit to address the issue of long delay in the disposal of cases in the nation’s court adding that that would go a long way in determining how other nations see Nigerian and to invest in the country. The Vice President faulted the way and manner appointees were scrutinized, adding that the take-a-bow policy be discarded as appointment issues should no longer be treated with kids’ gloves. According to him, the screening should be robust and thorough for the best to emerge. Meanwhile, responding to questions at the opening plenary, Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN, called for more transparency and openness in the administration of the budgets of both the judiciary and legislative arms of government. Malami said that the judiciary has consistently lamented poor funding and yet no one can tell how the money allocated to them has been expended. He therefore submitted that for the issue of inadequate funding to be addressed in the judiciary, there must be a system in place that will allow the financial books to be opened. “The starting point is transparency and accountability … let the financial books of the judiciary be opened like that of the executive arm”, he said. According to the AGF, even though the budgetary allocation of the judiciary is higher than that of the National Assembly, the lawmakers seem to be better off than the judiciary, so there is the need to know how much is provided and how it is applied. “The same way that the executive opens its financial books for public scrutiny, the same way the legislators and the judiciary should open theirs”, he stated. On the issue of appointment of judges, Malami advocated the need for a legislation that will remove all bottlenecks that take away merit in the process of selecting and appointing judicial officers. He maintained that the current guidelines used in selecting and appointing judges promote incompetence, adding that the consideration of federal character principle further robs the bench of merit when appointments are been made. Speaking on the financial autonomy for the judiciary, Malami recalled several efforts by the President Buhari administration to ensure that the judiciary is truly independent citing Executive Order 10 among others, which he regretted has been challenged in court. He however called for consensus building among the three arms of government to realize the independence of the judiciary. In a welcome address, President of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Olumide Akpata, noted that the declining state of the nation’s justice sector was the major reason for the convocation of the summit. “Today, I believe that our call to action must begin from our admission of the state of affairs of our administration of justice that we are thoroughly dissatisfied with. There is a convergence of opinion of both the Bar and the Bench that the Nigerian justice delivery system is not operating at its optimal best”, he said. Among the issues the NBA President said would be looked into at the summit, is the process of appointment into the bench of various courts in the country which “must be manned by not just the best hands we can find but also by incorruptible minds”. He urged stakeholders to commit to statutory and constitutional reforms, institutional and funding reforms, and manpower reforms for the desired change to take place. “The lip service that we have paid to these reforms over the years must stop from today”, he said, while appealing to both the bar and bench to uproot every divisive tendency that is hampering the effectiveness of the justice sector in Nigeria.

Oshiomhole clears air on calling Makinde ‘over hyped social media gov’

  Adams Oshiomhole, former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has reacted to tweets disparaging Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.   Oshiomhole denied calling Makinde ‘an over hyped social media governor’.   The tweets ascribed to Oshiomhole denigrated the governor amongst other issues.   However, the former, in a statement signed by his media aide, Victor Oshioke on Sunday, distanced himself from the handle.   The APC National Chairman described the Twitter handle as fake.   According to the former Comrade governor, the handle is not operated by him or any of his aides.   The statement reads: “The attention of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has been drawn to a series of tweets from a twitter account @A_Oshiomhole commenting on recent national issues. Specifically, there was a tweet that originated from this account on January 20, 2022 which seem to insinuate that H. E. Seyi Makinde, Executive Governor of Oyo State is an “Overhyped Social Media Governor.”   “We wish to alert the general public that this twitter account is fake as it is not operated by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole or any of his aides.”   The APC chieftain stressed that he holds Makinde in high esteem; hence has no reason to disparage him privately or publicly.   “Let it be on record that all tweets that have originated from this account or will originate from it in the future do not represent the opinions or sentiments of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.”   Oshiomhole also disassociated himself from some Twitter handles carrying his names and photographs.   “Some of them are: @adamsoshiomhole, @Oshiomhole, @adamsosh, @_adamsoshiomole, @adamsOshiomhol, @Adamsoshiomol4, @Adamsoshiomol5”   Disclosing his handle, the former APC National Chairman said his “official handle which will be verified soon is @aoshiomhole.”

Nine escape death as moving train crush truck, tricycle in Kano

At least nine persons have escaped death after a train crushed a Dangote cement truck and one tricycle in Kano State. Public Relations Officer of the Federal Roads Safety Corps, Kano State, Abdullahi Labaran confirmed the incident. He said the incident occurred on Sunday along Obasanjo Road in the Kano metropolis. Abdullahi said about nine persons were injured while the vehicles and accompanying properties were damaged. He said the FRSC rescue team conveyed nine victims to the Murtala Muhammad Specialists Hospital in Kano for medical attention. An eyewitness told newsmen that the truck driver ignored warnings by bystanders about the movement of the train, as a result, the train rammed into the truck and the tricycle while trying to cross the rail line.

2023: Obasanjo’s rebuff of PDP, sign of imminent failure – Okechukwu

A foundation member of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Mr Osita Okechukwu has described the recent rejection of Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) overtures by former President Olusegun Obasanjo as a signal to another defeat in 2023 presidential election. Mr Okechukwu wondered whether PDP leaders have refused to understand that Nigerians are suspicious and were no longer interested in reinforcing the PDP’s share the money culture. He said it smacks of political incorrect move for a party, whose membership card was publicly shredded to go back asking for the support of the same statesman that rejected its association. Mr Okechukwu, who is Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), made the remarks while speaking to journalists in Abuja, Sunday, maintained that the rejection of PDP’s request to re-join the party by Chief Obasanjo comes as failure signal at the eve of 2023 Presidential election. It could be recalled that PDP bigwigs led by its national chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, visited Obasanjo in his Abeokuta Ogun State residence, during which the former President remarked, “I have been with the party right from inception. Whatever I do in my own life, because I became President on the platform of PDP, PDP will continue to be part of the history of my life. “But, having said that, the day that in my ward I decided to tear my PDP card was the day I ceased to be a member of PDP and that day I vowed that I will not be a member of any political party again, but I will remain a statesman in Nigeria, in West Africa, in Africa and indeed in the world.” Going further, Okechukwu stated: “I have my sympathy for our sister political party, PDP, over this misadventure. Just imagine the uncommon electoral boost the party would have generated if Chief Obasanjo had accepted their request.” “The statesman’s re-entry could have boosted the morale of the rank and file of the PDP. In short, the rejection is a bad omen, particularly coming at the eve of the crucial 2023 presidential election.” Asked his take on the swipe of the PDP Chairman, Ayu, who berated President Muhammadu Buhari and APC as clueless and for plunging Nigeria into eternal debt, Okechukwu quipped, “I have my tremendous respect for His Excellency Iyorchia Ayu, an intellectual and seasoned academian; however one needs to name some of the huge and uncountable infrastructural deficit PDP bequeathed to Buhari’s regime, which compelled borrowing for development. He listed them as “Ibadan-Lagos standard gauge rail line and other rail lines abandoned by PDP “Less than transparent privatised Power Sector, which has dangerously stifled economic development. “Lagos-Ibadan, Lagos-Abeokuta, 2nd Niger Bridge, Kano-Maiduguri, Abuja-Makurdi, including other 13,000 federal road network nationwide. “Re-equipment and upgrading of the Armed Forces and other Security Agencies emasculated by the PDP.” PDP chieftains that accompanied Ayu to visit Obasanjo included, the National Secretary, Senator Sam Anyanwu; deputy National Chairman, South and former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Mr Taofeek Arapaja; the party’s 2019 Vice presidential candidate, Mr, Peter Obi, as well as other NWC members.

Police confirm killing of four miners by gunmen in Plateau

The Plateau State Police Command, on Sunday morning, confirmed that four men were killed at a mining site by yet to be identified gunmen on Saturday evening. The Command, through its Public Relations Officer, ASP Ubah Ogaba, disclosed this in an interview in Jos, the State Capital. Ogaba said, “Four men who went to a mining site at Mai Farin Mota were shot dead by yet to be identified gunmen.” According to him, “The scene was visited by the police and has been beefed up with security.” He said investigation had since commenced to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death of the four miners.
