Sunday Igboho releases New Year message, says ‘I’m not at war with Buhari’

  Yoruba Nation campaigner, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, says he is not at war with the President, Muhammadu Buhari, the six governors in the South-West zone or any government official. He, however, stressed that it was saddening that the Buhari regime has not addressed the security challenges in the South-West zone which was the genesis of his agitation for Yoruba Nation. Igboho, in his 2022 New Year Message, said everyone living in the country deserves to be protected regardless of their tribe, religion or political leanings. The New Year message was signed by one of the activist’s lawyers in Nigeria, Pelumi Olajengbesi, on behalf of his client. It was titled, ‘Sunday Igboho’s New Year message for 2022’. It read, “Let it be abundantly clear that I am not at war with President Buhari, the Governors or anybody in government. What I want the government to do is to address the genesis of my agitation for a Yoruba Nation. “The genesis is the insecurity in Ibarapaland and other places in the entire Yorubaland where farmers were maimed, hacked to death, kidnapped and raped as if there are no security agents in the country. Everybody deserves to be protected and feel safe in their country regardless of their tribe, religion or political leanings. “At some points our people became helpless and they can no longer go to their farmlands again. Scores of farmers were butchered to death in 2021 and the government pretends that all is okay. No, this must not continue and this was why I rose to stop the menace. I didn’t speak up to fight government, I spoke to ensure protection for our people. “My message is that in 2022, the government should rise up and put an end to the havoc caused by herdsmen that are criminals and give everyone a sense of belonging – whether foreign or locals — and stop the attack of our people in Yorubaland. “I am not selfish about myself, I am more concerned about helpless citizens who buried their loved ones to aimless killings in 2021 and I pray the Almighty God would stop the killings of innocent people in Nigeria.” Detained in Cotonou prison for over five months For over five months, the 49-year-old agitator has been in detention in neighbouring Benin Republic since his arrest around 8pm on July 19, 2021 at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou. The Cour De’appal De Cotonou since the arraignment of Igboho on July 27, 2021, has not sat, fuelling speculations that the detention of Igboho is laced with political undertones. Igboho’s continued incarceration has also doused Yoruba Nation agitations in the last five months as his followers and associates have laid low, suspending secessionist rallies as was done in the South-West before the near-perpetual ordeal of the agitator. Igboho’s mentor in the struggle, who is also an arrowhead for self-determination, Banji Akintoye, had since left Nigeria for Benin Republic after he got wind that the Buhari regime plotted his arrest. The 86-year-old professor of History had said he was in Cotonou to facilitate Igboho’s release. Buhari’s maddening heat on separatists The Buhari regime in 2021 turned maddening heat on separatist agitators and descended on their arrowheads including Igboho who agitated for the South-West to pull out of the Nigerian State over perceived injustice and insecurity. On July 1, 2021, around 2am, the Department of State Services stormed the Ibadan residence of Igboho in a Gestapo style, killing two of his associates and arresting 12 others. The luxury cars and the house of the agitator in the Soka area of Oyo State were also riddled with bullets. The DSS subsequently declared Igboho wanted for allegedly stockpiling arms to destabilise Nigeria under the pretext of secessionist agitation, an allegation he had since denied. After about three weeks underground, Igboho found his way to Cotonou and planned to escape to Germany through an Air France Cotonou-Paris-Hamburg flight but the trip was botched as the Interpol at the airport arrested him and his German-citizen wife, Ropo. The Interpol at the airport had arrested the duo at the behest of the Nigerian Government. The Beninise Government subsequently arraigned the agitator before the Cour De’appal De Cotonou on migration-related offences and for gunrunning but the court on July 27, 2021, ordered that Ropo be released while Igboho be remanded in prison till further notice. Ropo, it was gathered, now shuttles between Germany where her children are based and Cotonou where her husband is perpetually detained. The court has not opened the case since then and all efforts by Igboho’s lawyers both in Nigeria and Benin Republic have not yielded in his release as the Buhari regime’s representatives in the Francophone West African country led by Nigerian Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), continued to push for the extradition of the agitator. VIPs indicted, political solution yet to produce results During his speech on the occasion of Nigeria’s 61st Independence Anniversary on October 1, 2021, Buhari accused a serving National Assembly member and Very Important Personalities of being sponsors of Igboho and the detained leader of South-East separatist group, the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, who is in DSS custody in Abuja and facing terrorism-related charges before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court. Also, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN) on October 22, 2021, said established a link between Igboho and a Boko Haram sponsor, Surajo Muhammad, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in the United Aram Emirates on charges of financing terrorism. The AGF alleged that between 2013 and 2020, Igboho received N127m from several financiers including a federal lawmaker. The government, however, refused to reveal the identity of the lawmaker. The DSS on November 23, 2021, contested a N20bn damages awarded against it by an Oyo State High Court, sitting in Ibadan, as damages to Igboho over the destruction of his house and the violation of his fundamental rights. The secret police added that the Yoruba Nation agitator was under extradition procedure to Nigeria. Though pan-Yoruba groups including Afenifere backed political solution to resolve the secessionist crisis in Nigeria after Malami said such can’t be ruled out but the posture of the Buhari regime has shown otherwise.

  Olayomi Koiki, the spokesman to the embattled Yoruba nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has explained that he was quoted out of context on the alleged plot to eliminate his principal in Cotonou prison.   Koiki, while speaking with Vanguard via WhatsApp call on Wednesday, on the alleged elimination of his principal, a news which was credited to him, stated that there was no time he said they wanted to eliminate Igboho.   He said: “I was quoted out of context. Nigeria not careless, won’t take expired vaccines again, says NAFDAC

Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has said the agency is working with international partners to ensure Nigeria gets vaccines with long expiration dates. Adeyeye spoke against the backdrop of the one million doses of vaccines that expired in November and were destroyed by NAFDAC and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency and the Abuja Environmental Protection Agency. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the 1,066,214 doses of expired AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines were destroyed at the Gosa Dumping site in Abuja. Adeyeye told NAN, on Wednesday in Lagos, that the expired vaccines had very short expiration dates which made it impossible to be administered in time due to logistics reasons. She said, “When developed countries started using the vaccine for many months, we didn’t have access to them until we started receiving donations, not just through COVAX alone but from some countries also. “The expiration date was shorter than what it was supposed to be and between the time we tested and start using it, there was not enough time and that was the only reason not because we were careless. “But going forward, we are working with international partners to ensure the expiration date of any vaccine we will be receiving are up to five or six months.”   On the new Omnicron variant of COVID-19, the DG said that studies on the variant were still ongoing globally. She advised Nigerians to continue to adhere to the safety measures given by the various health authorities to further curb the spread of the virus. “A lot is still not known about Omicron because studies are still going on globally about the variant. “The only way to keep safe is to continue with the usage of mask, maintain social distancing, wash our hands regularly and avoid crowded areas to stay safe,” she said.

Uche Nwosu’s abduction exposes masterminds of insecurity in Imo, says IPOB

  The Indigenous People of Biafra, on Tuesday, said those who ‘abducted’ the 2019 gubernatorial candidate of the Action Alliance Party, in Imo State, Chief Uche Nwosu, had exposed as the masterminds of insecurity and other crises rocking the state.   Nwosu was allegedly abducted by some armed men suspected to be operatives of the Nigerian Police Force, on  Sunday, although the authorities later said he was arrested.   According to the seccesionist group, the Imo State government and others would have fingered it and its arm, the Eastern Security Network, had it eluded the public knowledge who the ‘abductors’ were.   IPOB stated this in a statement signed by its Director of Media and Publicity, Emma Powerful.   According to the statement, “We the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB),  ably led by our great leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, condemn the abduction of Mazi Uche Nwosu in the church. This is another vindication that IPOB and Eastern Security Network (ESN) are not responsible for the numerous attacks, abductions/kidnappings in Imo State contrary to false accusations and propaganda by Hope Uzodinma and his co-travellers.   “The incident has also further confirmed the complicity of Hope Uzodinma and the APC party in the insecurity going on in Imo State and South-East region.   “But for the dexterity and fighting spirit of Nwosu’s family and associates, Hope Uzodinma, his co-travellers and some infamous media houses would have, as usual,  pointed accusing fingers at ESN, IPOB and unknown gunmen. But God Almighty, Chukwu Okike Abiama, has exposed them this time around.    “We will not be surprised if by tomorrow, Hope Uzodinma fingers Uche Nwosu and his in-law Rochas Okorocha as the sponsors of IPOB, ESN, unknown gunmen and insecurity in Imo State. We know his antics and such options may not be out of the table.   “For the umpteenth time, no single individual can sponsor IPOB. Two killed in farmers-herdsmen clashes in Jigawa

The Jigawa State Police Command has said that at least two persons were killed in two different clashes between farmers and herdsmen in the state. Spokesman of the command, ASP Lawan Shiisu Adam, confirmed this in a statement issued to newsmen. He said the incident occurred in Taura and Malam-Madori local government areas. According to the statement, “On 23/12/2021 at about 1330hrs the village head of Tofa in Taura Local Government Area reported to police that there was a clash between a farmer and a herdsman in his village. “As a result, a 21-year-old Shu’aibu Nasiru of Tofa village was stabbed with a sharp object suspected to be a knife on his left chest in his farmland and died instantly.” He said a police team was mobilized to the scene, the corpse was taken to General Hospital Ringim for medical examination and was confirmed dead while two persons were arrested. Meanwhile, Adam also revealed that another incident happened at Gandun Galadima in the Malam Local Government Area. He said as a result of the incident, five persons sustained various degrees of injuries and were rushed to Hadejia General Hospital for medical attention. He added that a 30-year-old Yakubu Saleh of Gandun Sarki was confirmed dead while receiving treatment at the hospital. The spokesman said five suspects were arrested in connection to the case. He added that they would be charged to court when investigation is concluded.

Nigerian forces arrest IPOB ESN leader in Enugu

The Nigerian Army and other agencies have arrested Godwin Nnamdi, a leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) militant wing, Eastern Security Network (ESN). Nnamdi, described as “notorious” was apprehended in Nkanu East Local Government Area. A statement on Sunday by Army spokesman, Brig. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu said the troops of 82 Division led the operation. Nnamdi was caught during the raid at a IPOB/ESN camp located at Akpowfu Forest in Nkanu East LGA. The joint forces engaged the dissidents in a fire fight. They took to their heels, leaving behind their wanted leader. Medical council scraps N900,000 fee for foreign-trained doctors

The Mental and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has scrapped the N900,000 mandatory fee for foreign-trained medical doctors.   The council, in a statement, announced that its previous publication that foreign-trained doctors are to undergo a six-month mandatory attachment programme in teaching hospitals has been withdrawn.   The medical council had asked all medical graduates who schooled abroad and seek to take the council’s assessment examination will undergo a six-month mandatory attachment programme.   Also, applicants who are Nigerian citizens were required to pay a non-refundable fee of N900,000, while non-citizens were to pay N1,400,000 for the programme.   The decision of the medical council did not go down well with many Nigerians in the wake of the massive emigration of health workers to other countries.   Owing to the directive, the House of Representatives mandated its committee on healthcare services to investigate the council over the directive.   In the new directive, the council said candidates who have paid the N10,000 registration fee will be refunded, adding that it will publish another curriculum for the training.   The council also deleted the previous directive published on its website.   “This is to inform the general public, that following the public reactions to the MDCN publication on the mandatory six-month teaching hospitals attachment programme for foreign-trained medical and dental graduates, especially the petition by a coalition of parents of foreign-trained medical doctors to the national assembly,” the statement reads.   “And based on the outcome of the meetings MDCN held with the leadership of joint senate committee on health and house of representatives committee on health care services and the house of representatives committee on public petition, MDCN hereby states as follows:   “The MDCN hereby withdraws the publication on the six-month attachment for foreign-trained medical and dental graduates and candidates are now left with the discretion to seek knowledge that will assist them with the assessment examination wherever and however they so desire. Candidates who have paid N10,000 (ten thousand naira) registration fees will have their money refunded.    “MDCN will publish in due course the curriculum for the training which has been developed by the examiners to guide the candidates in preparation for the examination.   “This curriculum was brought out from the “Red Book” which is available on the MDCN website. MDCN would also publish the performance pattern of candidates in the previous examinations based on country of training in order to guide parents in the choice of foreign universities for their wards, and this will be done and published after every subsequent examination.”

Gov Ortom signs N155.6b 2022 budget into law

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has signed the 2022 appropriation estimates of N155.6b into law. The Governor also gave his assent to the amended Revenue Law of Benue State, which he recently presented to the State House of Assembly for amendment. Governor Ortom had on October 27th, 2021, presented a draft budget estimate of N155.6b to the State Assembly for consideration and passage. Performing the ceremony Friday, December 24th, 2021 at the New Banquet Hall of Benue Peoples House Makurdi, Governor Ortom said the budget is realistic and in line with the CBN’s directive. He thanked the Speaker and Members of the Benue State House of Assembly for the speedy consideration and passage of the budget estimates. Insecurity: We won’t hand over Nigeria how we met it – Masari

  Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State has expressed the resolve of the state and federal governments to work round the clock to end the menace of banditry bedevilling the state and the country before the expiration of their tenure come 2023.   Masari described the insecurity situation experienced in the northwestern part of the country and indeed the whole country as “domestic banditry” though admitted that there have been some cases of “cross-border banditry.”   The Katsina State Governor made the disclosure on Wednesday after signing the 2022 appropriation bill into law which he said was primarily meant to complete the jobs started by his administration.   “Essentially, the banditry we are facing in Katsina and by extension northwest and some parts of this country is domestic banditry perpetrated by people that are known to us; that we have lived together with; of the same culture, same language, same religion. In fact, the only thing that differentiates us now from them is that they are bandits and we are not,” he said.   Masari urged the people of the state to rise up collectively as a people and take advantage of technology to defeat the hoodlums and restore the lost peace in the state.   He also admonished them to eschew the blame game and come up with meaningful solutions to the quagmire instead.   “Collectively as a people, we must defeat them. We must conquer our environment, have self-control of our environment, and dominate our environment. There are two advantages that we have: our number and technology.   “Putting the two together, we will restore normalcy to our people. It is not beyond us to do that but what is most important people must sit up. There should be no more cowardice in the fight against these evil men and women. They are evil and represent evil and for us as a people, we should not shy away from our responsibilities by pointing accusing fingers. Before you point accusing fingers do the role that is expected of you.   “In this fight, there is no loss. The only loss in this fight is if you run away and refused to fight. That’s what the law says. It professes in this part of the country, that we are religious, we are Muslims, we have been thought and directed in situations like this on how to react. We should not under any condition run away we should stay and fight,” he said.   “The only way to challenge these people is to show them that we are willing, determined capable of defending our territory and our area and our lives and our properties. This does not mean that we are taking away the responsibility of the government. No, far from it. It is reinforcing the purpose of government to provide leadership to secure life and property, honour and dignity of the people you lead. We must conquer this evil. We must. Many responsible people are already offering suggestions on how best to deal with these people because without peace there won’t be development.”

Insecurity: This is not Imo we rescued in 2011 – Okorocha

  Former Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, has expressed worries over the high level of killings in the state, saying the state is not the same as the one he governed from 2011.   Okorocha expressed displeasure that over seven governors in the country and other notable individuals would have attended the burial ceremony of Jemimah Nwosu, mother of his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, but could not because any governor visiting Imo State must come with armoured vehicles.   “Indeed I am not happy with what is happening in my state.   “This is not the Imo State we know, these killings must stop, this was the situation I met on ground in 2011 when I came in as governor and I did my best to bring it to a halt,” he said.   Okorocha, now Senator representing Imo West Senatorial District, said this at St. Peter’s Anglican Church Eziama Obaire in Nkwerre Local Government Area of Imo State.   He opined that many other notable individuals would have attended the burial but due to insecurity and negative reports coming from the state they could not.   Okorocha appealed to youths in the state not to vent their anger on innocent Imo people over poor governance in the state but rather use their voters cards to express their anger to vote out bad government and leaders both at the state and federal government level in the upcoming general election in 2023.   Recall that Imo State has been in the news in recent time over rising cases of insecurity resulting in killings, kidnapping of notable individuals including some traditional rulers by unidentified gunmen.

ISWAP bombs Maiduguri as Buhari visits Borno

  The Islamic State in West African Province (ISWAP) has launched multiple rockets attack on Maiduguri, Borno state capital.   The insurgents launched the attacks on Thursday ahead of President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to the city to inaugurate projects done by the state government .   The explosives landed in several areas which include Ngomari, Bulumkutu, Ajilari And Ayafe communities within the metropolis.   The insurgents were said to have lunched the attack from the outskirt of Auno which is about 15 kilometres away from the city.   Residents within the area scampered for safety amid sounds of the explosions.   The casualty figure is yet to be ascertained but many houses were destroyed.   The president arrived in Maiduguri around 11 am as part of a one-day official visit to Borno.   The president was received by Babagana Zulum, governor of the state, Usman Kadafur, his deputy, members of national and state houses of assembly, and some top government officials.   Other dignitaries that received the president were Faruk Yahaya, chief of army staff, and Christopher Musa, theatre commander of operation Hadin Kai.   Onyema Nwachukwu, army spokesperson, was not immediately available to comment on the attack.
