A member of the House of Representatives, Hon Chinedu Ogah, has called on President Bola Tinubu to order the Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, Professor Moji Adeyeye, to review the ban on the production and sale of sachet alcohol in the country.
Ogah, who represents Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency of Ebonyi State at the lower chamber, made the call in a statement on Saturday.
He stated that the ban had made over two million Nigerians to be out of job in different parts of the country.
He explained that a larger number of youths agitating for the nationwide protests were individuals who were laid off from over 20 indigenous factories.
According to him, the Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria, a sub-sector of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria with about 2.5 million workers, were affected by the ban on sachet alcohol.
The lawmaker, who is also the House of Representatives Committee Chairman on Reformatory Institutions, added that the affected 20 factories, worth trillions of Naira, have been closed down for over six months now.
“Over two million Nigerians are out of job because of the ban and these are the people agitating for the planned national protests in the country slated for August 1 to 10, 2024.
“The greatest form of agitation is coming from Nigerians domiciled in Lagos and Ogun States, where these factories are sited.
“These factories have been paying their taxes and so, after carrying out an overview on this development, we want Mr President to look into it as it demands urgent attention,” he said.
