Probing Ikpeazu a big distraction – Obidients advise Gov Otti

Some followers of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, have cautioned Governor Alex Otti of Abia State against probing his predecessor, Okezie Ikpeazu. This was as they said probing the immediate past governor would amount to distraction as he settles down to governance. They urged Otti to focus on delivering good governance to the people of the state rather than probing Ikpeazu. The call was contained in a statement signed by Mazi Chetachi Ikpe of the Peter Obi Grassroots Movement (POGM) in Abia State and Ndubueze Obiakwata, the chairman of Obidients Across Parties Alliance (OAPA) in the state. Commending Otti for a superlative first month in office, they said: “Your Excellency, you’re indeed God’s Gift to God’s Own State (Abia).” The statement reads partly: “Abia civil servants are glad that you kept your promise of payment of salaries. Indeed, workers’ welfare should be the foremost priority of any government, especially a Labour Party government. In line with your promise that civil servants shall receive their salaries on the 28th of every month, we expect Abia workers to receive their June salary today, being the 28th day of June. “We are impressed with the State of Emergency you declared on waste evacuation and management in Aba and Umuahia. Indeed, “cleanliness is next to godliness,” and God’s Own State should not be dirty. We believe that under your watch, the era when a notable Igbo son said that “Aba stinks” is over for good. “However, we urge you to resist the temptation of embarking on a probe of your predecessor(s) since such shall become a huge distraction [for] your avowed task of rebuilding Abịa and wiping away our tears, as you promised in your inaugural address as governor. “When Peter Obi came into office as Anambra State governor, instead of turning around to blame and probe his predecessor, he proved to the electorate that he was better by beating his predecessor’s records.” The groups further noted: “All eyes are on you, as the only Labour Party (LP) governor in Nigeria. We are in a hurry to see you show Nigerians what they will miss if they miss having Mr Peter Obi, the LP presidential candidate, who was robbed of his mandate, as president.” They added: “Finally, we urge you to keep your eyes on the ball, bearing in mind that you stand on the shoulders of giants such as Dr Michael Okpara and Dr Sam Mbakwe. “Through you and our principal, Peter Obi, we believe that a new Nigeria is possible.”

JAMB pegs minimum admission score at 140

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has fixed the minimum scores for candidates to secure admission into universities in Nigeria at 140. The Board also pegged the minimum cut off marks of Polytechnics at 100, while that of Colleges of Education was fixed for 100 as well. The decision was reached at the 2023 Policy Meeting on Admissions to Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria taking place at the National Judicial Institute, Abuja.

DSS has powers to prosecute cyberstalking – Judge rules

A Federal High Court sitting in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, on Friday dismissed a preliminary objection filed by a defence counsel challenging the prosecution powers of the Department of State Security (DSS) to prosecute cybercrimes. On October 18, 2021, the DSS arraigned a teenager before the court on a charge of cyberstalking. The defendant, according to the prosecution, allegedly engaged in cyberstalking by circulating the nude picture of a retired Permanent Secretary on social media after she tried to blackmail the retiree into paying her N15 million. Counsel to the teenage girl, Mr Andrew Arthur, had filed a Notice of Objection challenging the powers of DSS to investigate and prosecute the charge filed against the defendant. Delivering a ruling, Justice Isa Dashen said that he had carefully gotten through the arguments and judicial authorities cited by defence and prosecution counsels to arrive at his decision. “I have carefully considered the submissions of counsel on both sides and the cases they cited, and I understand them. I disagree with the defence that DSS lacks the power to prosecute cybercrimes. “Under the Cybercrimes Prevention and Prohibition Act 2015, the DSS is a relevant security Agency and has the competence to investigate and prosecute cybercrimes. “The DSS has competently investigated this case, and prosecuting counsel for DSS, Victor Uchendu, has the powers of prosecution, and I dismiss the Notice of Preliminary Objection. “The case is hereby adjourned until September 28,” Justice Dashen said. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the retired permanent secretary, now deceased, who is a witness for the DSS following a petition he submitted in his testimony, told the court in his testimony that the teenager made a nude video of him when they had sex at a hotel in Yenagoa in August 2021. The retired permanent secretary died in November 2022.

The Oyo State Government said it has yet to approve a new salary structure for workers in the state. The declaration comes on the heels of a rumour that the state government has approved a new salary structure. The government, however, debunked the rumour on Wednesday. A statement signed by Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde, reads: “Although the government is working on reviewing the current salary structure, the committee set up for that purpose has yet to turn in its report. “Therefore, the salary structure being circulated could not have emanated from the state government. It should thus be disregarded in its entirety. “The committee was given eight weeks to report back to the state government. The state government is still considering further ways of easing the burdens.”

Wike’s thanksgiving to God unacceptable — he must repent first, says Atiku’s aide

  Phrank Shaibu, a media aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, says a thanksgiving service by Nyesom Wike, immediate past governor of Rivers state, is not acceptable to God until he repents.   On Sunday, a service was held at the St. Peters Anglican Church in Obio-Akpor LGA of Rivers where Wike thanked God for escaping death twice during his time as governor of the state.   During the service, the former governor said he was poisoned at the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and that he was hurriedly flown out of the country for medical treatment.   In a statement on Monday, Shaibu said Wike should go for confession over how he “badly” governed Rivers state instead of thanking God.    “Governor Wike ought to be doing confessions rather than thanksgiving. Psalm 51:17 says God does not despise a broken spirit and a contrite heart,” he said.   “His thanksgiving cannot be acceptable to God unless there is first repentance.”   The aide said Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo and ally of Wike, should concentrate on working for his people.   “Governor Makinde should, however, focus on delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of Oyo,” he said.   “He is the only G5 member who currently holds political office. The other four are jobless spent forces who are running helter-skelter seeking appointment and protection from the EFCC.”

All vehicles returned to former Zamfara governor, Matawalle – Police confirm

All the vehicles seized by the Zamfara State Police Command from the former governor of the state, Bello Matawalle were returned to him on Saturday. ASP Yazid Abubakar, the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the development on Saturday via a telephone conversation, saying that the vehicles were returned in compliance with the order of the Federal High Court sitting in Gusau. The court, presided over by Justice Aminu Bappah-Aliyu, had ordered all security agencies that removed the vehicles from Matawalle’s houses in Gusau and Maradun to return them within 48 hours. On the order of the state government, the security operatives removed the vehicles from the two houses of the former governor. According to Abubakar, “Yes, the police command has complied with the court order as regards to returning of all vehicles belonging to the former governor, Bello Matawalle.” He assured that all the vehicles have been returned to the premises of Federal High Court, Gusau. The spokesperson to Gov. Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, Suleiman Idris, had earlier said more than 40 vehicles were recovered from the two houses of the former governor. The security agencies, he confirmed, took the action on the directive of the state government.

APC to Amnesty: Uncharitable to say Tinubu isn’t fighting insecurity — it’s his top priority

  The All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken a swipe at Amnesty International for saying President Bola Tinubu is doing little or nothing to tackle the killings of Nigerians by gunmen across the country.   Isa Sanusi, Amnesty’s acting director in Nigeria, said more than 120 people had been killed since Tinubu assumed office on May 29.   “Protecting lives should be the utmost priority of the new government. The Nigerian authorities must urgently take steps to stop the bloodletting,” Sanusi had said.   In a statement on Wednesday, Felix Morka, spokesperson of the APC, said it was inconsiderate for Amnesty International to accuse the new government of dereliction of duty while it is just settling down.   Morka said Tinubu had promised Nigerians that security would be his topmost priority.   “While we thank Amnesty International for drawing attention to the lingering security challenges in our country especially in Plateau, Kaduna, Benue and Zamfara, we find its conclusion hasty and inconsiderate,” he said.   “During his inaugural speech, President Bola Tinubu said clearly that security will be the topmost priority of his administration and he promised to reform the nation’s security doctrine and architecture.    “He promised in categorical terms that security shall be the top priority of our administration because neither prosperity nor justice can prevail amidst insecurity and violence.   “It is therefore uncharitable and inconsiderate of Amnesty International through its acting Nigeria country director, Isa Sanusi, to accuse the new government that is just settling down of dereliction of duty.   “Amnesty International is known for stoking internal conflict and citizen antagonism in developing nations through weaponisation and accentuation of local situations to achieve its sinister objectives while hypocritically looking the other way when similar incidents occur in developed nations, especially in the Western world.”   Morka said Amnesty International should allow the new government to do its work “without their usual condescending hypocrisy”.

Peter Obi gives update on identity theft drama in UK

  The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has disclosed that his identity duplication crisis started in Nigeria.   Obi made the disclosure on Sunday during a Twitter space organised by the Parallel Media which was monitored by our correspondent.   Recall that Obi’s associates had raised the alarm over his delay at Heathrow Airport, United Kingdom, by immigration officers over a case of alleged identity duplication.   Obi said he had been to the UK about four times in 2023, adding that he resided there before he became the governor of Anambra State.   He said, “I have been to the UK this year at least four times when I went to the Chatham House when I was invited by the UK government. So, it was a surprise to me. I had lived there for years and still own property there because that was where I lived before I became governor and for me to appear at the airport and they will ask me to sit down, I was very surprised, but all these happened within a few minutes.”   Noting that the incident had taught him to be careful, following the possible threat to his personality, Obi disclosed that the attempt to clone his identity began in Nigeria.   He said, “It is shocking when someone tells you that your identity was duplicated; my first reaction was to say it means nothing, but I was referred to an expert on identity duplication who further shocked me.   “He (the expert) said to me, ‘Peter you could be implicated for a rape, you book a hotel, they have their own gang that comes in, set you up at night and someone says you did this, and they call police. In the UK and everywhere in the Western world, this is a serious case, and you can’t get bail. You could be implicated in murder with your duplicate, same thing if they are checking any luggage.’   “Thank God nothing happened; I have been managing it, and I have been to the UK since then while they too are investigating. When I arrived after that, I was asked and I explained to them, they said they are looking into it, that’s all I can say for now. I’m also extremely careful, and I’m managing it, and hoping nothing goes wrong, but it is something that started from Nigeria,” Obi narrated.
