Obioma, a former member of the federal House of Representatives, urged the party members to disregard the shenanigans, and continue to work harmoniously towards deepening the overwhelming acceptability and popularity of the APC among the majority of Abia citizens and the residents of the state, especially now the general election is fast approaching.

Drug test for 2023 aspirants outrageous, apologize – IPAC replies NDLEA

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has declared opposition to drug tests for 2023 election aspirants. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) had advised political parties to carry out the test. IPAC National Chairman, Yabagi Sani in a statement described the proposal as “outrageous, outlandish, preposterous and despicable”. He also called it a deliberate attack” on the sensibilities of lovers of democratic governance in Nigeria. Sani said the “awkward proposal portrays politicians as drug addicts who must be certified fit to run for various elective offices”. “It is reprehensible and unacceptable”, he added, demanding an apology from NDLEA. “It is high time we begin to show regard for the nation’s political leaders as obtainable in other democracies.” Sani not that parties’ activities are guided by their rules, the 1999 Constitution as amended, the Electoral Act 2022 and INEC guidelines/regulations “There is no justification whatsoever for extra-constitutional requirements as proposed by the NDLEA.” IPAC, however, condemned drug abuse “by misguided citizens” and urged the agency to discharge its duties in line with the law.

Osun 2022: INEC warns against vote buying, selling

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that voter education and enlightenment about elections is an essential ingredient for a free, fair and credible election. Professor AbdulGaniy Olayinka Raji, the Osun INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) made this known at the Voter Education Implementation Workshop in Osogbo, on Wednesday. Professor Raji also condemned that act of vote buying and selling, adding that INEC does not condone it. The Osun INEC boss stated that the commission has powers to arrest and prosecute any individual found within the polling station engaging in vote buying and selling. Pointing out that the commission, however, had no powers to arrest anybody doing so outside the voting area, he called on politicians to go out and convince the electorates. The INEC Director for Voter Education and Publicity, Ayodele Victor Aluko in his address held that voter education and enlightenment were critical to the mobilisation and effective participation of voters in the electoral process. Represented by Mary Nkem, Deputy Director, Voter Education, he also disclosed that the public depended on the commission for information regarding the electoral process to help them not to only participate, but to reaffirm their confidence in the readiness and ability of the commission to conduct free, fair, inclusive and acceptable elections. According to him, “The Commission has made and continues to make several in-exhaustive efforts to enhance the electoral process. “In view of the above, it is essential for the public to be enlightened regularly in order to ensure that they are properly aware of the efforts of the Commission and their roles and responsibilities in each of the steps being taken by the Commission. “This will make them understand how these improvements can further strengthen the electoral process to become transparent.”

Stephanie Terungwa: NYSC confirms death of missing corps member, says face defaced

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has confirmed the death of a female corps member, Stephanie Se-ember Terungwa Edward Achado, who was declared missing on 14 April, in Abuja. Stephanie’s family declared her missing in a notice shared on social media. She was said to have left home in her NYSC uniform to participate in Community Development Service, CDS, but didn’t return. It was also alleged that some of her vital parts had been removed by the killers. A statement issued on Facebook by the NYSC said the face of the deceased corps member was defaced beyond recognition. The statement reads, “The attention of the NYSC Management has been drawn to the pictures making the rounds in the social media of a missing Corps member deployed to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. “The corpse was found wearing the NYSC khaki trouser, with the face defaced beyond recognition. “On account of this, Management reported the discovery to relevant security agencies to help identify the body. It was later confirmed that the remains was that of a missing Corps member, Stephanie Se-Ember Terungwa, with State Code Number FC/21B/5807. “Investigations are, however, currently ongoing to unravel the identity of the perpetrators of the dastardly act in order to bring them to justice. “May her soul rest in peace.”

Champions League: Liverpool beat Chukwueze’s Villarreal 2-0

Liverpool are on the brink of a third Champions League final in five seasons after breaking Villarreal’s resistance to win the first leg of their semi-final 2-0 at Anfield on Wednesday. Two goals in two minutes undid Villarreal boss Unai Emery’s defensive game plan as Pervis Estupinan deflected Jordan Henderson’s cross into his own net before Sadio Mane slotted in a second. The Reds remain on course for an unprecedented quadruple of Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup. And barring a huge upset when the sides meet again in southern Spain in six days’ time, Liverpool’s season will finish in Paris on May 28. The population of Villarreal would fit inside Anfield but the 3,000 travelling support did their best to match the noise of the home support early on. In stark contrast to the free-flowing thrills of Manchester City’s 4-3 win over Real Madrid in the other semi-final on Tuesday, Emery’s men followed the same tactic that saw them past Juventus and Bayern Munich by retreating behind the ball. However, the Yellow Submarine could barely lay a glove on Jurgen Klopp’s men as Liverpool just had to bide their time to make their dominance count. The Reds have now scored 135 goals this season, but were held scoreless in a frustrating first 45 minutes. Mane headed wide Mohamed Salah’s pinpoint cross with the best opening. The Senegalese also saw a deflected effort fly just wide and Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli escaped unpunished with some sloppy handling from a number of speculative efforts. Another long-range strike was the closest Liverpool came to breaking the deadlock before the break as Thiago Alcantara’s sweet strike clipped the post. The six-time European champions started the second half at a higher tempo and quickly began to punch holes in Villarreal’s rearguard. Fabinho’s goal was ruled out for offside against Virgil van Dijk in the build-up. Moments later, Anfield erupted as the error-prone Rulli finally cost the Spaniards with a feeble attempt at parrying Henderson’s deflected cross. The last thing the visitors could afford was the floodgates opening, but they were powerless to stop the waves of Liverpool attacks. Salah was the architect with a perfectly weighted pass for Mane to prod past Rulli on 55 minutes. The offside flag came to Villarreal’s rescue once more to rule out Andy Robertson’s strike. Emery was hailed the “king of the cups” by Klopp for his stunning Europa League record, with one of his four triumphs in that competition coming as Sevilla boss against the German during his first season at Liverpool in 2016. However, Liverpool are a different beast six years on and the limitations of a side sitting seventh in La Liga were shown up as they struggled to mount any sort of response to going behind. Luis Diaz smashed across the face of goal as Liverpool threatened to kill the tie off with a third. The English giants had to settle for a two-goal advantage, but they are yet to lose by a two-goal margin in 55 matches this season.

N100m form: APC raising funds to prosecute court cases, others –Okorocha

A former Governor of Imo State, Senator Rochas Okorocha, has said the All Progressives Congress jacked up the price of its nomination and declaration of interest forms for the presidential election to N100 million to be able to finance court cases and pay judgment debts.   According to Okorocha, members of the political parties usually forget about their party after being elected into public offices.   “The issue of the cost of the forms has been a little bit controversial. On the side of the public, they think it is too high. And really, everybody will think it is too high, given the salaries of the president, the governors and others. But on the side of the party, for them, it is a way to raise money: one. Two, it is a way to remove people who are not serious in the business, who might find cheap funds and decide to go for court cases to seek injunctions and what have you. I think these are the reasons.   “But, I think this is an eye-opener, going forward. I think the idea of democracy should be amended a bit in Nigeria so that we can begin to get, actually, the persons that the people want. We would have been better to say in the next political dispensation, let everyone aspiring should let the people purchase their forms,” he said.   According to him, it will make a candidate to feel indebted to the people and the government will truly be of the people, by the people and for the people.   “It looks like it is all moneybags affairs…if you can afford it, pay. That is going to throw up a lot of people who think they could just go and buy the votes, buy the people, buy the delegates, get into power and refund themselves,” Okorocha said.   He added, “The party has a duty to run the party. The truth is that after primaries, nobody cares about the party. And as APC has litigation now, with almost N100m (judgment debts) that they owe, where will they get the money to pay? So, they think that the presidential aspirants have the capacity to mobilise resources from their friends and folks to support them; and in that case, they can make money. That is the only justifiable reason.”   Okorocha, who featured on Politics Today, a current affairs programme on Channels Television which our correspondent monitored from Abuja on Tuesday, who noted that he had earlier informed the President, Muhammadu Buhari, of his presidential ambition, however, pointed out that Buhari would not openly and unilaterally endorse anybody for the APC.   Okorocha, who is presently a member of the Senate, noted that the President would consider several factors before endorsing any of the presidential aspirants in the APC.   The ex-governor said, “First, he will look at the mood of the nation and see actually who will fit into the mood of the nation. President Buhari will look at who can win this election for APC because, definitely, he wouldn’t want to lose the seat to PDP. So, he will be smart enough to say this person can do that. So, there are a lot of considerations. It is not something he wakes up and says this person should go. We are talking about Nigeria now, we are not talking about APC as a party; they are two different things. Remember that there are other parties. PDP is there, watching. And PDP’s prayer will be, ‘May APC produce a very bad candidate that we can just have an overall.’ These are the factors he has to consider.”   When asked about the possibility of non-APC persons like former President Goodluck Jonathan; Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele; and President of the African Development Bank, Akinwumi Adesina, becoming the choice candidate of Buhari, Okorocha stated that the President would not imposed anybody on the party.   Okorocha also said presidential aspirants from the South who are not from the South-East geopolitical zone have a moral burden to bear in the race. He stated that on the same moral ground upon which southerners have called for power shift from the North, is the same group upon which it should go to the South-East.   Speaking on the likely emergence of Joanthan as APC’s consensus candidate, Okorocha said, “He will contest like any other person (at the primary). Nobody is afraid or scared. There will be nothing like consensus candidate. That is not likely to happen because the President Muhammadu Buhari that I know will consider certain factors to do that.”

2023 presidency: Special prayer to hold for Tinubu in Mecca

Ahead of the 2023 presidential election, a special prayer is to be held on Thursday, April 28, for the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress and presidential aspirant, Bola Tinubu, in Mecca.   It was gathered that the session tagged ‘Special Tawaf for Asiwaju’ would commence at 12 noon with participants wearing their ihram (sacred dress of Muslim pilgrims) attire.   In a copy of the invitation card obtained on Tuesday evening, participants are expected to converge on the King Abdulaziz Gate, Saudi Arabia.   Tawaf refers to encircling the Ka’abah seven times in an anti-clockwise direction as part of Umrah or Hajj while supplicating.   “The session is to commence by 12 noon and would be conducted around Kaabah at the centre of Islam’s most important mosque, the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.   “Participants are to wear the ihram attire and congregate at the King Abdulaziz Gate.   “The Tawaf is expected to be attended by some Islamic scholars and political leaders from Nigeria, including the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa,” a statement from the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Eromosele Ebhomele, said.   The statement made available to our correspondent was titled, “2023 election: Special Tawaf to Hold in Mecca for Tinubu”.   Obasa was quoted as saying the event was also to thank God for the former governor of Lagos ahead of the presidential election.   According to Obasa, all those expected to partake in the Tawaf have the faith that God would ensure peaceful electioneering and victory for Tinubu.   “We have come to seek the favour of Allah and His blessings for Asiwaju in the coming election. We are not testing Allah’s will and power but soliciting His blessings, support and anointing because Allah is sufficient for us.   “We are doing this in support of Asiwaju’s presidential ambition.   “Having consulted widely and across the country, we strongly believe that every other thing required for the success of the election and victory for Asiwaju are in the hand of Almighty Allah,” the Speaker said while urging other Muslims and well-meaning Nigerians to join the session.

2023: I’ll never drop presidential ambition – Orji Uzor-Kalu

The Chief Whip of the Senate, Orji Uzor-Kalu, has said that he did not drop his 2023 presidential ambition, as reported by some sections of the media.   He said he would contest the presidential ticket of the All Progressive Congress if the party zoned it to the South-East.   Kalu, who cleared the air over a statement he released on Tuesday, maintained that equity demanded that the South East should be supported to get the presidential ticket of the APC.   He said, “My stand is very clear, I didn’t drop my presidential ambition and I will never drop it.   “I only urged our brothers from the South-South and South-West geo-political zones who came out en masse to contest for the office of the president to drop their ambition and support us because of equity.   “If we are talking about equity, the presidential ticket should be zoned to the South-East being the only zone that has not tested power since 1999.We can’t have people from South- South and South-West running when we are talking about equity.   “Former president Goodluck Jonathan, was vice, and later president for six years. Former president Olusegun Obasanjo was president for eight years and Prof Yemi Osibanjo is going to be vice president for eight years again.   “So if there is anything called equity and justice, it should be support for the South-East and unless that support is given to us, every other zone in the country should contest for presidency in 2023 including people from Buhari’s village. “We are negotiating for them to support us, because I know there’s no single aspirant that the president, Buhari, has told to run for presidency. I know him and his antecedent, Buhari can never tell anybody that he would make him president.   “He will always tell people who go to him to consult with their people. I have not told him that I want to run for presidency because it has not been zoned to the South East”.   Kalu also enjoined politicians seeking various political offices in the country to put the peace and unity of the country above their ambitions.   He insisted that no meaningful progress could be made in the country in absence of peaceful coexistence of the Nigerian people.

Kevin De Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus opened the scoring for City, before Benzema pulled one back. Phil Foden put the Premier League champions ahead again. Bernardo Silva struck after Vinicius Junior scored for Los Blancos, before Benzema’s late penalty made the margin a narrow one. The brace means the France forward has now scored 14 Champions League goals this season. “What can you say about Karim Benzema? “He’s a great player, he’s my brother. “Let’s hope he can end the season winning LaLiga, winning the Champions League and finish up with the Ballon d’Or,” Vinicius Jr said.

APC members reject new zoning formula in Osun

All Progressives Congress (APC) members in Orolu and Irepodun Local Government Areas of Osun State have kicked against moves by some members of the party to distort the zoning arrangements for both Senatorial and House of Representatives seats. The APC members, who had gathered at the party Secretariat in Ilobu on Monday, insisted that the House of Representatives ticket of the party should be retained in Irepodun/Orolu, while the Senate ticket remained in Osogbo/Olorunda as it was agreed in 2018. While alleging that some individuals within the party were currently scheming to have the two tickets of the party zoned to Osogbo/Olorunda, they appealed to party leaders and the State governor Adegboyega Oyetola to ensure that there is fairness and equal representation across the area. Baring their minds through a communique issued at the end of their meeting, the members revealed that the conduct of the political affairs in the Federal Constituency had been with mutual respect and on equal partnership amongst the four local government areas that formed the Federal Constituency. Reading the communique issued after the meeting, the Secretary of APC in Osogbo Federal Constituency, Abayomi Oyedeji insisted that for mutual respect and unity of purpose, the zoning formula agreed upon in 2018 should be maintained. He added that maintaining the status quo was a key factor in ensuring victory for the APC in the 2022 Osun gubernatorial and 2023 general elections.

Court orders CCT Chairman, Umar to appear before Senate for alleged misconduct

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday dismissed a suit by the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Danladi Yakubu Umar seeking to stop the Senate from probing him on alleged misconduct. The Court held that as a public officer administering law, he is answerable to the Senate on moral standards. Justice Inyang Eden Ekwo, in a judgment in the suit, ordered the CCT boss to go and appear before the Senate and answer questions on a public petition brought against him by an aggrieved citizen. The judge held that his case seeking to stop the probe by the Senate lacked merit and was dismissed.

BBNaija's Khafi Kareem faces misconduct probe at Met Police

Khafi Kareem, a former housemate of reality TV show, Big Brother Naija, is facing a misconduct probe at the UK's Met Police over her appearance on the show. According to a report on BBC, Kareem, a  police constable at the Met Police, faced a panel on Monday, where she revealed that she took and surrendered her laptop to organisers of the reality TV show.   It was also revealed that Khafi had gone on the reality show in 2019 "without authority".   The Met police officer had told her superiors she wanted to appear on Big Brother Naija to "promote the Met Police" globally.   During the hearing, it was reported that Khafi denied allegations of breaching standards in respect of "orders and instructions" and "discreditable conduct" and failing to declare a business interest in relation to publicity and promotion of the show.   She spent 77 days in the Big Brother Naija house before she was evicted.   The hearing held at the Empress Building in west London on Monday.   Since the show, Khafi has gone on to marry a fellow housemate, Gedoni Ekpata and they have a son.

Why aspire to be president if you can’t raise N100m? –APC Spokesman

Felix Morka, national publicity secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says anyone aspiring to be president should have the “sufficient base” to raise N100 million.   He said this on Monday when he was interviewed during a programme on Silverbird Television.   The APC had fixed N100 million for its nomination and expression of interest forms for persons interested in contesting the presidency on the party’s platform.   Speaking on the form fees, Morka said although the price appears high when one considers the Nigerian setting, presidential hopefuls should have the necessary support to raise such an amount. “I hate to use the US as an example. The ability to raise funds is a clear criterion whether or not you are eligible to participate at the primaries and the debate especially. You aspire to run for the highest office in the land, you should have some appeal, some reach to members of the party. Sell your ideas, sell your vision. Forty-five million people giving you N1, do the math and see what it comes to. That is a lot of money. We do have that possibility,” he said.   “But for those who have the money already, they are quite welcome to use their own funds. The party has commitments and we do not have any statutory funding as you know.   “Within the context of Nigeria, N100 million is a lot of money. Those who seek the office around the country are expected to have a sufficient base, otherwise why would you aspire to be president, if you are that obscure or unsupportable by your party members and the electorate?” He also said although the country has challenges with security, the ruling party has delivered on its promises.   On assuming office in 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari promised to tackle insecurity, revamp the economy and wage war against corruption.   Speaking on the development, Morka said some people are trying to “cloud” the achievements of the current government.   “The administration has done extremely well on all of those three counts (economy, security and anti-corruption fight) without question,” the spokesman said. “I know there is a lot of smoke out there and sections of our society cloud some of our stellar accomplishments of this government, whether you are looking at infrastructure or the fundamentals of this economy which is by the way projected — GDP to grow by 3.5 percent in the assessment by IMF. That is significant. We went into recession shortly after COVID-19 but we came out of it rather rapidly.   “On this issue of national security, we have challenges no doubt, but the government is doing everything that is possible within the availability of our resources to deal with these problems.”

ASUU faults FG’s negotiation, may continue strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has condemned the Federal Government’s handling of the negotiation on its demands and nonchalant attitude towards the ongoing strike.   The ASUU rollover strike is in its 10th week today and will end in two weeks.   Last week, Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, while featuring as a guest on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’, told the union to meet with the Benimi Briggs Committee, saying the decision to suspend industrial action embarked upon by ASUU could only be taken by the union.   On when the issue will be resolved, the minister had said, “It depends on ASUU. The ball is in their court. They should go and meet the Benimi Briggs Committee and look at what the committee is doing and make further inputs so that the work can be accelerated.”   However, in an interview with our correspondent on Sunday, the President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, said it was shameful for Ngige to tell the union to go and liaise with another party other than the government.   He added that the union might have no choice but to roll over the strike after its expiration.   He said, “The rollover ends in two weeks, and there is no information, nothing new from the FG. They didn’t make any effort to get in touch with us or seek ways of ending the strike.   “Our members will decide after two weeks what step to take. We will meet. We are not begging them for discussion; they should invite us for any meeting. That’s the way it should be. We are not on strike with Ngige or Briggs but against the government, so why is he saying we should go and meet one committee or one person? We are on strike against a system. Ngige just talks without thinking. Are we on strike with a particular person?”   Some of ASUU’s demands include the release of revitalisation funds for universities, renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, release of earned allowances for university lecturers, and deployment of the UTAS payment platform the payment of salaries and allowances of university lecturers.   Similarly, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Education and Associated Institutions have extended their strike by one month.   National President, SSANU,   Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim; General Secretary, NASU Mr. Peters Adeyemi, stated that it was unfortunate that the government kept mute and remained indifferent to the unions’ demands.   Some of the items in the agreement JAC signed with the FG are the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, payment of earned allowances, usurpation on non-academic career positions by vice-chancellors, and inclusion of university staff school into the university community, non-payment of minimum wage arrears, and funding of state universities.   It read, “Deriving from the feedback received from our branches in respect of the resolutions conducted which supported fully the ongoing strike and other actions to be taken by the leadership of JAC, this is to inform members that the strike has been extended by one month to commence on midnight of Sunday, 24th April, 2022 pending when the government will have change of heart and be favourably disposed to our demands as highlighted in our letters dated 1st March, 2022 and 16th March, 2022 to the representative of the government and the Honourable Minister of Labour & Employment.”

Apongbon fire: Lagos to demolish structures under bridge if traders refuse to vacate

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, says structures under the bridge in the Apongbon area of the state will be demolished if traders refuse to vacate the area.   Following a fire outbreak in the area on March 23, the federal government had ordered traders doing business under Lagos bridges to vacate before March 31 or face forceful eviction.   However, Sanwo-Olu said despite the order, traders have continued their business under the bridge.   According to a statement issued on Sunday by Gboyega Akosile, his chief press secretary, the Lagos governor issued a three-day ultimatum to the traders to vacate the area, otherwise, the structures would be demolished.    “Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Sunday, issued a three-day ultimatum to traders under the Apongbon bridge in Lagos Island to vacate or risk demolition of the space by Wednesday this week,” the statement reads.   “He gave the warning while driving on the bridge during his inspection of the blue line rail project and saw that traders were back under the bridge with their goods displayed after they were driven away in the aftermath of the fire outbreak under the Apongbon bridge about six weeks ago.   “Governor Sanwo-Olu, who frowned at the unlawful return of the traders under Apongbon bridge, said the enforcement team would be deployed to the bridge after the three days’ ultimatum issued.”

Insurgency: NAF to deploy 150 newly trained special forces

A total of 150 Advanced Special Forces operatives of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), trained in collaboration with the British Military Advisory Training Team are to be deployed to troubled areas facing security challenges across the country. This is even as the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, expressed confidence that with the deployment of the special forces operatives in various theatres of operations, NAF and indeed Nigeria would derive significant benefit from their dedication and unique capabilities. Speaking at the graduation ceremony held at the NAF Regiment Training Centre Annex, Special Operations Command, Bauchi, on Friday, Air Marshal Amao, expressed optimism that the newly trained Advanced Special Forces operatives had imbibed the necessary skills, tactics, techniques and procedures required to conduct special operations pursuant to achieving the operational objectives of the NAF. Represented by the Chief of Policy and Planning of the Nigerian Air Force, Air Vice Marshal Charles Ohwo, Amao said that the current spate of insecurity in the country necessitated the intervention of NAF. According to the CAS, NAF’s ability to conduct air raids without hostile interference and respond swiftly to threats had been key to minimising hostile attacks on the civil populace. “These operations are critical given the myriad of asymmetric security threats facing the nation today which require intervention from the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the Nigerian Air Force in particular. “Indeed, our ability to conduct air without hostile interference and respond swiftly to threats, has been key to minimizing hostile attacks on the civil populace thereby providing a foundation for our successes. “Our successes in the various theatres of operation have, however, necessitated the need for heightened security on our Bases. “Accordingly, the Nigerian Air Force has made concerted efforts, over the years, to build our internal capacity and resilience for force protection by boosting the strength of our Regiment and Special Operations Forces personnel through purposeful training and human capacity development,” Amao said. He stated that pursuant to his vision of an enhanced and sustained critical airpower capabilities required for joint force employment in pursuit of national security imperatives, NAF had so far trained about 5,000 Regiment and 2,000 Special Operations Forces personnel. The CAS said the graduating 150 students of the Advanced Special Operations Course 1/2022 were the first set of personnel to undergo in-country advanced special operations training, which he revealed was executed at a reasonable cost, as the training was conducted in Nigeria. The training, according to Amao, was largely facilitated by the support NAF received from the British Military Advisory Training Team. While appreciating the British Military Advisory Training Team for its continued support, the CAS expressed the hope of further collaboration from the British team in the next batch of the Advanced Special Operations Forces. Earlier in his welcome address at the event, the Air Officer Commanding, Ground Training Command, Air Vice Marshal Ibukunle Daramola, said that 285 personnel were nominated for the Advanced Special Operations Course 1/2022 training, but only 150 graduated. “Out of the 285 personnel nominated for the course, only 150 were found fit after series of medical and physical screening and inaugurated to commence the course. “At the end of the course, 145 personnel, comprising three officers and 142 airmen will be graduating today (Friday) and they have been found worthy in character and learning to qualify as Advanced Special Forces Operatives, also known as Nigerian Air Force Panthers,” he said. Also speaking, the Commander, British Military Advisory Training Team, Colonel Rory Shannon, described as “deep-rooted and very strong” the relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom. “At the Security and Defense Dialogue that was held between the United Kingdom and Nigeria’s Armed Forces and other Agencies in January of this year, our Chief of Defense Staff spoke, reiterating a desire to strengthen links between our militaries, including in this particular area. “The Nigeria-UK relations is hugely important. The deployment of what we’ve conveyed here will help save lives and defeat a common enemy. So, I know that there are continuing close cooperation, we will continue to contribute to improving the security situation,” he said.

Ukraine War: Russia ends space cooperation with US, Europe

Russia has said it will end cooperation on the International Space station with America’s National Aeronautics and Space Administration, (NASA) and European Space Agency. The Head of the Country’s Space Agency ROSCOSMOS, Dimitry Rogozin revealed this on social media as reported by Daily Mail. He said Russia will no longer work with NASA or the European Space Agency on the satellite and will submit a timetable for completion of current projects to the Kremlin. The move was said to be a direct response to sanctions placed on the country as it continues to invade neighbouring Ukraine. Recall that, despite sanctions slammed on Russia by the U.S and its allies, the country brought America’s astronaut, Mark Vande Hei back home from space. Russia’s gesture has put fears to rest that the country threatened to leave Mark Vande Hei who has been living on the International Space Station since April 2021 stranded in space.

Abia deputy gov declares intention to succeed Ikpeazu

The Deputy Governor of Abia State, Ude Oko Chukwu, on Friday in Umuahia, declared his intention to contest the governorship seat of the state on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.   By this move, come 2023, he will be replacing Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu as the next governor of the state, if he wins the governorship poll.   Oko Chukwu said he wants to offer “conventional service” to Abians “having learned the lesson in areas we have not done well and to better the lot of Abians and where we have done well, to improve on it.”   He highlighted security, economy, healthcare, urban renewal, road infrastructure and education as his areas of focus.   Having served in different capacities in the state, he said, “Hopefully, we will end up stronger than when we started. It will be unfair not to give back to Abians what they have given to me.   “I understand what it means to run the state. It is not a tea party and I will use governance to better the state. I will lead and serve the state in good faith.”   Responding, the Abia State PDP chairman, Alwell Okere, said the party executives are happy with his achievements.   He assured, “We are going to be fair and provide level playground to all aspirants.”   He explained that the party executives looked at the situation of the state and came out with a zoning system entirely voted for by members.   He assured Abians that the zoning was done in good faith.   Speaking, a former PDP state chairman, Ndidi Okere, said that anyone who wants to take away your right usually come with beautiful argument, stating “it is a question of semantics.”   He said, “The truth is that power should shift to Abia North. Before now, Abia has been peaceful. It is the turn of Abia North for peace to reign.   “It is inconceivable that anyone from the South or Central will take what belongs to Abia North. This is my submission and I want it to be considered.”

‘We may increase tariffs’ — telcos union laments insecurity, high energy costs

Telcos under the aegis of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) say they are considering an upward review of tariffs.   According to the telcos, the development is due to the rising cost of diesel and its implications for the cost of doing business.   They also said the security situation in the country has made it unsafe to send out service personnel to some parts of the country, thereby hampering their operations.   Speaking with TheCable on Thursday night, Gbenga Adebayo, ALTON chairman, called for government intervention in the telecommunications sector. He said unless there is an intervention, operators will have no choice but to begin a process of price review.   “We will continue to provide services but we are concerned about the high costs. Without government intervention, we may consider increasing tariffs to reflect current realities,” Adebayo said.   “We can’t just wake up and increase prices. There are regulatory procedures that we need to follow to review prices. We may consider following those steps to commence the process of price review.”   FACE-OFF IN KOGI ‘COULD LEAD TO BLACKOUT’   The ALTON boss expressed concern about the shutting down of telecommunications facilities by the Kogi State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) over tax disputes.   He said the action was hinged on an ex parte court order obtained by the KIRS over “unsubstantiated allegations” that its members are in default of tax payments to the state government.   “This issue is likely to lead to a total communications blackout in the entire Kogi state, parts of Abuja and possibly impact on service availability in some parts of the following states: Nassarawa, Benue, Enugu, Anambra, Edo, Ondo, Ekiti, Kwara, and Niger. These are states sharing borders with Kogi,”  Adebayo said. Adebayo said that as a result of the state government’s action, the affected telcos were unable to refuel the power generators nor provide any support or maintenance services at the sites.   “The impact of these outages will gradually spread to the states mentioned above and if no action is taken within the next few days, a total outage of telecommunication sites in all these states will be catastrophically experienced,” he said.   “To the best of our knowledge, our members have settled all statutory levies and taxes due to the Kogi government and have taken necessary steps to comply with local laws that govern business activities within the state.”   INABILITY TO BUILD INFRASTRUCTURE IN FCT   He also said the signage and advertisement office in the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) has refused to grant telecommunication service providers permits to build infrastructure.   This, he said, is affecting the quality of services around FCT and Abuja.   Advertisement Adebayo urged the federal executive council (FEC) to prevail on the FCDA to grant permits for its members to deploy infrastructure.   “ALTON and its members will no longer tolerate discriminatory charges against the sector,” he said.   “The industry is planning to begin a study on varying tariffs to some of the unfriendly telecommunications states in other to accommodate their demand.   “Those states that are requesting for non-statutory levies and taxes are the ones being subsidised by some viable states.”   Adebayo asked for protection from sub-national governments and non-interference in the operations of telecom services.
