NIN-SIM linkage: NCC extends deadline for subscribers with over four SIMs to July 31
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has extended
the deadline for the disconnection of unlinked lines from April 15 to July 31,
for subscribers with more than four SIM cards.
The deadline for those with less than four SIM cards expired
on March 29, as reported by TheCable.
According to a source, the March 29 deadline “has been
effected”.
The source said telcos have been given a deadline of July 31
to verify the national identity numbers (NINs) of subscribers, and “are
expected to bar any line whose NIN fails verification on or before then”.
It is understood that the new deadline followed requests for
“long extensions” by operators.
On February 29, the commission said a total of 45 million
lines in the country would be barred for not linking their SIM cards with their
NINs from February 28, 2024.
The agency said out of the 45 million, 42 million lines have
neither made a call, had a data session or sent an SMS in over one year. But
the deadline was extended to March 29.
The NCC, reiterating its position, asked telcos to bar
unlinked lines on March 29, saying there would be no more extensions for
subscribers to comply with the NIN-SIM policy.
The agency said telecommunication companies have been
directed to bar owners of more than four SIM cards whose registration failed to
match their NIN data.
Akinwumi Adesina proposes ‘United States of Nigeria’
Akinwumi Adesina, the president of the African Development
Bank (AfDB), has proposed a name change for Nigeria to the “United States of
Nigeria”.
Adesina suggested the rebranding while speaking on the need
for restructuring on March 6, when he received the 2024 Obafemi Awolowo ‘Prize
for Leadership’.
The economist said it is necessary to change the governance
system in the country and decentralise governance to states to provide greater
autonomy.
The former minister of agriculture said state governments
must focus on unlocking the huge resources in their areas, adding that “states
that adopt this strategy would have less of a need for monthly trips to Abuja
for grants”.
“To get out of the
economic quagmire, there is a compelling need for the restructuring of
Nigeria,” he said.
“Restructuring should not be driven by political expediency
but by economic and financial viability. Economic and financial viability are
the necessary and sufficient conditions for political viability.
“If there was one attribute that defined Chief Obafemi
Awolowo, and there were many, it would be his visionary boldness.
“He went where others feared or failed to go. In the
process, decades later, his footprints remain in the sands of time.
“Likewise today, in Nigeria, we need men and women with
vision, who are willing to take bold decisions. Surgeries are tough. They are
better done well, the first time.
“The resources found in each state or state groupings should
belong to them. The constituent entities should pay federal taxes or royalties
for those resources.
“But let’s be clear. The achievement of economically viable
entities and the viability of the national entity requires constitutional
changes to devolve more economic and fiscal powers to the states or regions.
The stronger the states, or regions, the stronger the federated units.
“Instead of the
Federal Government of Nigeria, we could think of The United States of Nigeria.
The old would give way to the new.”
This, according to Adesina, would change the relational
mindset between the states and Abuja — “the fulcrum would be the states, while
the centre would support them, not lord over them”.

Easter: Nigeria will one day overcome corruption, associated evils – EFCC boss, Olukoyede
Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission, EFCC, Ola Olukoyede has expressed hope that Nigeria someday would
overcome incidences of corruption and other associated evils bedevilling it.
He added that since Christ Jesus was able to overcome the
corruption of death and rose to a glorious life of victory, the people could as
well overcome issues of corruption.
Olukoyede stated this in his goodwill message on Sunday
commemorating the Easter celebration.
The EFCC boss tasked Nigerians to, in the spirit of the
celebration, emulate the virtues of Christ which is devoid of evil and fraud.
He, therefore, urged Nigerians to make deliberate efforts to
rid themselves of all forms of corruption and sharp practices in all their
endeavors noting that such would make the nation better and habitable.
The message read, “As Christ overcame the corruption of
death and rose to a glorious life of victory, love and light, may we also
overcome corruption and associated evils in our nation.”

Problems left behind from colonial rule still affecting Nigeria, says Obasanjo
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says some of the
challenges left behind by the colonial administration are still affecting
Nigeria.
Obasanjo spoke on Saturday in Enugu at the public
presentation of the book: “In Brotherhood We Stand: A Roadmap for the Rebirth
of a Fragmented Nation”, written by Chris Okoye.
According to a statement by Kehinde Akinyemi, his special
assistant on media, the former president said there is a direct correlation
between economic and political reforms.
He also said the country’s historical experiences at
constitution making and political reform indicate that there are structural
defects that need adjustments in order to widen the nation’s democratic values
and practices.
“The clarion call in
Nigeria today is one for restructuring and a reassessment of the terms of our
union as a nation. No matter how economically viable a nation is, bad
governance and a wrong system of administration can bring it down,” the
statement quoted him as saying.
“As a nation, our history reveals clearly that we have been
through some difficult times and have missed great opportunities.
“Our historical experiences at constitution making and
political reform show that we may have some structural defects that require
adjustment so as not to continue to constrain the deepening, widening and
consolidation of democratic values and practices.
“Indeed, some of the
contradictions and challenges bequeathed by the colonial administration have
continued to pose problems for us to this day. One of such bequest is Western
Liberal Democracy.
”As things stand therefore, our constitution making efforts
must go down to the grassroots to deal with the issues of inclusion, popular
participation, equity ownership, legitimacy, rights and obligations with
adequate compensation of African communalism; caring and sharing.”
US President Biden declares Easter Sunday Transgender Day of Visibility
United States President Joe Biden has declared Easter Sunday
“Transgender Day of Visibility.”
The International Transgender Day of Visibility was created
on March 31, 2009, and has continued to be celebrated every March 31.
The day was created to honour transgender people and raise
awareness of the discrimination they continue to face.
However, the White House disclosed that Biden’s declaration
was backed by the US Constitution.
According to Biden: “Now, therefore, I, Joseph R. Biden Jr.,
President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in
me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim
March 31, 2024, as Transgender Day of Visibility.
“I call upon all Americans to join us in lifting up the
lives and voices of transgender people throughout our nation and to work
towards eliminating violence and discrimination based on gender identity.”
Since its inception, the Biden administration has made LGBT
activism a cornerstone of its policy priorities. He boasted in his statement
that he appointed transgender leaders to his administration and ended the ban
on transgender Americans serving openly in the military.
In the past, some of Biden’s transgender inclusivity events
at the White House have backfired.
Meanwhile, LGBTQ – Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and
Queer – people have been warned to stay out of Nigeria.
This warning was issued by the spokesperson of the Nigerian
Police Force, Muyiwa Adejobi.
Adejobi warned that the police would be going after such
people in Nigeria.
He said LBGTQ members seen in the trending “Of Course”
challenge would not find Nigeria a comfort zone, describing them as
“criminals.”
There has been a trending video showing alleged members of
the LBGTQ community describing who they are and what people think of them.

Eniola Badmus, the
actress, and Lege Miami, the entertainer, have clashed over a matchmaking
service.
Lege, who hosts a matchmaking show on YouTube, recently
claimed that the actress sought his services to find a partner, but described
her as “picky”.
In a viral voice note online, Badmus lashed out at Lege’s
comments and criticised his

She also advised him to learn the proper rules of
matchmaking if he lacked understanding.
“Hello Lege, it is
like your brain is messy, what do you mean no one should look for your trouble?
Who is your grandmother? Who are you? I am saying you have to be discreet about
what you are doing,” she said.
“You are doing a matchmaking, if you do not know rules,
f**king go online and Google rules about it. How dare you put my name out there
saying Eniola is picky. You are mad!”
In response, Lege questioned if
Badmus paid for a private service and insulted her appearance.
“Eniola Badmus did
you pay for a private session? Did you tell me you did not want anyone to know?
You are not alright and you will be well soon,” he said.
“You know I used to respect you, I am now running away from
you. Did I post the video we made in Abuja? Are you a fool? Wule bantu, you are
shapeless”.
Badmus joined the movie industry in 2008.
She has starred in several Nollywood films and won awards

Binance: Regulating cryptocurrencies falls outside CBN purview, says Cardoso
Olayemi Cardoso, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria
(CBN), says it is not in the purview of the apex bank to regulate or prosecute
actors in the cryptocurrency sector.
Cardoso clarified this at a news conference on Tuesday after
the monetary policy committee’s (MPC) 294th meeting in Abuja.
On February 29, Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to the
president on information and strategy, accused cryptocurrency trading platforms
of manipulating the value of the naira in the foreign exchange market.
The federal government has since launched a clampdown on
Binance, a cryptocurrency exchange.
According to Cardoso, the regulation of cryptocurrency
platforms is the duty of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in
Nigeria, and the national adviser’s office and not that of the CBN.
“A month ago, we actually did have collaboration with law
enforcement agencies, EFCC, the SEC and other regulatory bodies as well. And I
think what came out of that, quite frankly, is work in progress, but also very
positive,” he said.
“We’ve been sharing information together. However, in this
particular case the responsibility for regulating cryptocurrency is not our
role.
“It is not ours. It
is strictly that of the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC). That is not our
responsibility.
“Of course, the issue of people being held in custody, again
strictly speaking is the Office of the National Security Adviser.
“That is not within the purview of the central bank.
Unfortunately, there is nothing to report to you or tell you. We just want to
clarify that is really the relationship the central bank has on this matter.”
CLAMPDOWN ON BINANCE
On February 28, two Binance top executives — Nadeem
Anjarwalla, a 37-year-old British-Kenyan and Binance’s regional manager for
Africa; and Tigran Gambaryan, a 39-year-old US citizen and Binance’s head of
financial crime compliance — were detained by the Nigerian authorities for
weeks.
Subsequently, a federal high court in Abuja ordered Binance
Holdings Limited to provide the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)
with the comprehensive data or information of all persons from Nigeria trading
on its platform.
On March 25, the office of the national security adviser
(ONSA) confirmed Nadeem Anjarwalla had escaped its custody.
Anjarwalla was said to have escaped after guards on duty led
him to a nearby mosque for prayers in the spirit of the ongoing Ramadan fast.
He is believed to have flown out of Abuja using a Middle
Eastern airline — but how he got on an international flight despite his British
passport, was unknown.

Drug Trafficking: United Nations assures NDLEA of support
The United Nations has assured the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, of support to succeed in its onerous task of curbing the menace of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking in Nigeria.
The Deputy Secretary General of the UN, Amina J Mohammed gave the assurance when she paid a courtesy visit to the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa, rtd, at the Agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
The UN Deputy scribe said the global body is willing to enhance the impact of the significant efforts of the Agency.
She was accompanied by the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Malick Fall.
This was made known in a statement issued by Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, on Monday.
“On behalf of the UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, we want to reconfirm our support from the United Nations to the work of this agency. It is extremely important, this is coming at a time when the challenges are more complex. The Chairman has spoken about the needs, and we are very pleased to hear that everyone is doing a very good job and we hope that we can increase the impact.
“From our conversation with the Chairman, the issue is clear, it involves many other sectors. We talked about the root causes, and the escape is often drugs. That is why it is important for us to work with the rest of the government to ensure that all people have a right to their dignity. I see this agency as a symbol that wants to do the job, to succeed. This is a challenge we will be here to support, Amina said.
“This is the only country that we have. And we must harness the potential through the work that we do. What we want to do is support with whatever that we can, to ensure a greater and better Nigeria that takes its position not only in Africa but worldwide”, she added.
In his remark, Marwa noted that the twin problems of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking remain one of the ferocious threats to public health and national security despite the significant efforts being made by NDLEA in the areas of drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction in Nigeria.
“With the dire consequences of the menace steering us in the face, upon my assumption of leadership in 2021, we have moved swiftly to halt the spiral turn of the situation and between then and end of 2023, we have been able to make over 48,157 arrests including 46 drug barons with a total of 8,350 already successfully prosecuted and convicted while 7,500 tons of illicit drugs were seized from them and 1,057 hectares of cannabis farms destroyed deep in the forests in parts of the country,” he said.

No Nigerian should be captive or held hostage in his fatherland – Peter Obi
The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, in the last general election, Mr Peter Obi, has said that no Nigerian should ever be a captive or hostage anywhere in his fatherland.
This is even as he said that it is comforting to hear that 287 school children abducted in Kaduna have been released.
The former Anambra State governor made this known in a post on his X handle on Sunday.
Obi said the report of their release is reassuring to the nation and their parents, while thanking the government, the security agencies, and all those who made immense efforts to see that the children were released from captivity and reunited with their families.
He said: “It is comforting to hear that 287 school children abducted in Kaduna have been released. It is hard to imagine the mental pain and trauma the children must have gone through in the hands of their abductors.
“The report of their release is however reassuring to the nation and their parents. I thank the government , the security agencies, and all those who made immense efforts to see that our children are released from captivity and reunited with their families.
“Efforts should also be made, not just to release many of our people in the different kidnappers dens across the country, but to end the scourge of insecurity completely.
“We must ensure that every Nigerian is safe in Nigeria, by not giving terrorists any operating space in our nation. No Nigerian should ever be a captive or hostage anywhere in his fatherland.
“I encourage every Nigerian, in the midst of these dark and fearful nights in our nation where danger seems to be lurking on every corner, to remain hopeful for the new dawn of a secure and safe nation – the New Nigeria which is Possible.”

Misinformation demoralizing military’s fight against terrorism — CDS
The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, has said misinformation is to blame for the wrong perception of the military and the upsurge of killings in communities.
The CDS made this statement in Jos, Plateau State, during a national convention/retreat on civil society/military partnership in mitigating crises in North Central, organized by the Middle Belt Journalists Forum, MBJF.
Musa said the military was neutral and asked for an understanding between the soldiers and host communities where they were posted to work.
The CDS, who was represented by the Chief of Staff at Operation Safe Haven, OPSH, Brigadier-General Michael Agi, said: “You have resolved to be a part of a sustainable effort to clear either the misinformation or effects of fake news, especially in the social media, which is largely accountable for the wrong perceptions of the military and the escalations of killings in the region.
“This retreat is coming at the right time when misinformation about our operations is undermining our strong determination to end terrorism and banditry.
“Let me assure Nigerians of the neutrality of the armed forces in dealing with ugly challenges facing the nation generally and the region in particular.’’
Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, in his remarks, said his administration was working closely with members of the pen profession towards promoting peaceful coexistence among the people, irrespective of any affiliation.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Information and Communication, Samuel Tsoho, the governor disclosed that a committee that would chart a way of returning internally displaced persons, IDPs, to their original place of abode was in place.

Current constitution can’t resolve economic challenges – Anyaoku
Mr Emeka Anyaoku, former Secretary General of the
Commonwealth, has said that Nigeria’s current constitution would not adequately
address the nation’s economic predicaments and other myriad challenges.
Anyaoku spoke to newsmen on Saturday in his country home,
Obosi village of Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
He said the current challenges being faced in the nation
like poverty, insecurity, and dilapidated infrastructure, among others, were
serious challenges bedevilling the country.
“I am on record for saying that these challenges cannot be
effectively addressed under the constitution and governance system we have at
the moment.
Tinubu’s Headache: How multi-billion dollar corruption under
Buhari hit economy — Investigation
“We cannot effectively address these challenges that have
assumed nationwide dimension, especially insecurity which has pervaded the
Northern part of the country and other communities,” he said.
He stressed that the current constitution was a departure
from the constitution that the nation’s founding fathers negotiated and agreed
upon.
“The constitution for a pluralistic state as Nigeria; we
have to return to those principles of the constitution as earlier agreed by our
founding fathers.
“Until we do that, I am afraid that we cannot effectively
deal with the challenges facing the nation,” he added.
When asked about the Monday sit-at-home observed in the
Southeast region and the negative effects on the economy, the elder statesman
said that the sit-at-home was causing great damage to the economy of the
country.
“The sit-at-home home
is doing great damage to the economy of the South East region. I do not support
the idea. I think it is doing great damage to the economy.
