Obaseki accepts Shaibu’s apology, says to err is human

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has accepted the public
apology made by his deputy, Comrade Philip Shaibu, noting that as a person of
faith, he was under obligation to accept the apology.

In a letter titled, “Re: Public Apology By The Edo State
Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu,” the governor said in good faith he trusts that
the public apology as expressed by Shaibu is genuine and followed by contrite
steps to improve his conflict resolution skills.

The letter read: “I have noted the public apology made by
the Deputy Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip
Shaibu. This apology followed an aberrant behaviour that contradicts what the
people of Edo State stand for.

“To name a few, the Deputy Governor needlessly filed
unfounded petitions in the Nigerian courts restraining me, the State House of
Assembly and Security agencies from a non-existent impeachment process,
followed by repeated breaches of protocol; unwarranted and unprovoked attacks
in the media on my person and the State Government.

‘Media frenzy’

“The media frenzy as a result of the above and more,
provided an impression of crises that has been precarious and distasteful to
Edo people in the State and across the world.

“Although these unwarranted provocations caused me severe
personal discomfort, as a person of faith, I am under obligation to accept this
apology because as they say, ‘to err is human, to forgive is divine’.

“In good faith, I trust that the public apology as expressed
by the Deputy Governor is genuine and followed by contrite steps to improve his
conflict resolution skills.

“I also enjoin the Deputy Governor to guide his proxies to
act in accordance with his piety.

“It is my sincere hope and that of my other colleagues in
government and all well-meaning Edo people, that these rhetorics will be put to
an end forthwith to enable this administration finish strong and deliver the
dividends of democracy to the greatest number of Edo people over this final
twelve (12) months,” Obaseki said.

Strike: Don’t disregard court order – AGF warns NLC, TUC

The Nigerian Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress, TUC
and other labour unions in the country have been told to shun the idea of
embarking on their planned nationwide industrial action.

The call is coming from the Attorney General of the
Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, who demanded that the
unions obey the court order that stopped such action.

The National Industrial Court had on June 5 restrained NLC
and the TUC, from embarking on any industrial action over the removal of fuel
subsidy.

The Minister, in a letter dated September 26, and addressed
to the NLC and TUC, and Femi Falana (SAN), argued that the plan by both labour
unions would have violated the subsisting order of the court should they to
embark on indefinite strike from October 3,

The Minister called on Falana to prevail on NLC and TUC, who
are his clients, to respect the order of the court and allow room for ongoing
negotiations between them and the Federal Government.

Fagbemi said, “These are undoubtedly issues that have been
submitted to the National Industrial Court for adjudication.

“Therefore, the proposed strike action is in clear violation
of the pending interim injunctive order granted on 5th June 2023 restraining
both Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress from embarking on any
industrial action/or strike of any nature, pending the hearing and
determination of the pending motion on notice.

“We wish to reiterate that a court order, regardless of the
opinion of any party on it, remains binding and enforceable until set aside.

“It is the expectation of the public that the labour unions
would lead in obedience and observance of court orders and not in its breach.

“It is, therefore, the earnest expectation of this office
that your distinguished law firm will advise the labour unions on the need to
protect the integrity of courts and observe the sanctity of court orders.

“Consequently, you are kindly requested to impress upon the
organized labour unions to note the fact that their proposed strike action is
in gross breach of the subsisting court order, as well as the appropriateness
of addressing their grievances/demands within the ambit of the law.

“Hence, the need for them to be more accommodating and show
greater appreciation of the effect of the order of the court, by shelving the
strike action.

“The foregoing will afford parties more room for further
mutual engagements, for a holistic and sustainable resolution of all
outstanding issues on this matter in the overall national interest.”

FG mulls plans to fast-track listing of tech startups on NGX

The Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy says it is collaborating with the Nigerian Exchange Limited to fast-track the listings of startups on the NGX technology board.   The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy made this known at an event, ‘Invest in Africa’s Future- Let’s talk about exits’ in New York, USA.   In a statement issued by NGX at the weekend, Tijanni said the initiative is necessary to encourage and boost tech entrepreneurs.   “We cannot do all these as a country without prioritising innovation and encouraging entrepreneurs to build. Nigeria is now open to investments.   “We want to prioritise the ability of our technology companies to export products, and we are targeting Africa first and then eventually start selling to the rest of the world,” he said.   At the same event, the Chief Executive Officer of NGX, Temi Popoola, stated that the exchange would support the minister’s agenda and President Bola Tinubu’s mandate.   “We will continue to do a lot of work that makes us able to attract local capital, and the day tech startups come to the exchange, we are confident that there would be a very good audience of investors wanting to own a bit of their shares.   “We at NGX are doing this by removing all barriers for that to happen,” he stated.   Recall that President Tinubu led the Nigeria delegation to the just concluded 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, USA.

Atiku explains to Supreme Court why PEPC judgement is flawed

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, is seeking an overturn of the judgement of the Presidential Election Petition Court due to its failure to take into cognisance the “Doctrine of Legitimate Expectation” regarding the failure of INEC to conduct the election in accordance with its own guidelines and the Electoral Act 2022. Atiku, in his Notice of Appeal, dated September 18, filed by his lead counsel, Chief Chris Uche, SAN, submitted that the failure of the tribunal to apply the said doctrine was enough ground for the apex court to set aside the entire decision of the lower court. Specifically in ground seven of his notice, Atiku maintained that the lower court erred in law when it failed to nullify the presidential election held on February 25, 2023, on the ground of non-compliance with the Electoral Act 2022. Atiku submitted that INEC conducted the presidential election based on gross misrepresentation to the appellants and the general voting public that the presiding officers were going to electronically transmit the results of the election directly from the polling units to the 1st Respondent’s Collation System. He said: “Contrary to the above unambiguous representations, undertakings, and guarantees, the 1st Respondent neither deployed the electronic transmission of election results nor the electronic collation system in the said election, sabotaging the raison d’etre for the enactment of the new Electoral Act 2022 and the introduction of the technological innovations. “Rather than hold the 1st Respondent (INEC) as a public institution accountable to the representations that it made pursuant to its statutory and constitutional duties, which created legitimate expectations on the part of the Appellant, the lower court wrongly exonerated the 1st Respondent of any responsibility by holding that the use of the technological innovations to guarantee transparency was not mandatory.” The former Vice President insisted that the February 25 poll was “conducted based on very grave and gross misrepresentation” and was, therefore, oppressive to the appellants, thus not free and fair, and not in accordance with the principles of the Electoral Act 2022.

Nigeria will collaborate with AU to ensure democracy thrives in Africa- Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has assured that Nigeria will support the African Union (AU) to attain democratic stability on the continent. Tinubu spoke on Tuesday during a meeting with Azali Assoumani, president of Comoros and AU chairperson. According to a statement issued by Ajuri Ngelale, presidential spokesperson, Tinubu said the AU is strategically positioned to secure consensus positions for the continent on global economic and socio-political relations, particularly with Nigeria’s backing. “There is nothing that can bring development and prosperity, outside of embracing freedom and constitutional order. It is a critical hallmark of sustainable development,” Ngelale quoted Tinubu as saying. “We appreciate that the AU is working hard to bring about peace in the Sahel and is actively negotiating between the warring factions in Sudan. “Peace in Sudan will be a great achievement. I appreciate your effort in Burkina Faso and our effective cooperation on Niger. “You can call me at anytime and we will discuss the peace and stability of AU member states. We need stability and prosperity for the black race. This is our era.   We must be peaceful in order to take maximum advantage of the developmental opportunities presented to Africa in this era.  “We must build a model of sustainable development. Nigeria will collaborate with you.” Tinubu said the shared vision between both leaders would only be achieved if they move beyond “those whose vision of Africa is narrow and evil”.  “We are not afraid of confrontation, but we prefer to be restrained for now, at this time,” he added.   According to the statement, Assoumani agreed with Tinubu, noting that it would take joint efforts to ensure that there is stability on the continent.  “It is our responsibility to confront the extra-constitutional wrestling for power on the continent,” the AU chair said.  “We have told China and Russia that they have a responsibility to ensure that there is stability in these countries, as there will be no developmental partnership where there is a lack of stability in countries being impacted by coupists. We appreciate your stand on these matters.” The president of the East African country also said the nation was seeking Nigeria’s experience on diversity management, electoral reforms and economic growth. The meeting between both leaders is a continuation of Tinubu’s bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States. Earlier, the Nigerian leader met with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to discuss how both countries can mutually benefit from investments.

Tinubu earns less than N1.5m monthly, ministers get below N1m -RMAFC

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) says political officeholders do not earn outrageous salaries.   Muhammed Shehu, chairman of the commission, made this known to NAN in Abuja on Sunday.   Shehu had earlier said the salaries of politicians, judicial and public office holders would be increased by 114 percent.   In the interview with NAN, he clarified that the review has been postponed due to economic challenges.   He said the salary of President Bola Tinubu is less than N1.5 million while ministers earn less than N1 million.    The RMAFC chairman said it is untrue that public officeholders were getting jumbo salaries.   “I want to disabuse the minds of Nigerians. It is not true that people are getting jumbo salaries,” he said.    “The monthly salary of Mr President is less than N1.5 million; that of a minister is not even up to one million naira.   “I know of an average CBN worker that is not even a director, who earns more than a minister.   “People in NNPC, NCC, ports authority earn huge salaries. What is the salary of a governor? What is the salary of a legislator?”   The RMAFC chairman said what is considered outrageous earnings are statutory office running costs, which should ordinarily be managed centrally by the National Assembly Service Commission (NASS).    “I know some people will say members of the National Assembly get up to 10 million or 11 million monthly,” he said.   “Those are not salaries, they are like operating costs of running their offices which in other societies the legislator does not have to see because there is a structure.   “Once you get elected, you make that structure from your constituency office to computers to logistics to the size of your constituency.   “Wherever you have constituency office, the workers you hire, it is the National Assembly Service commission that is supposed to take care of that.” He said the Nigerian system allows a legislator to be allocated a certain amount, which is spent and the receipts retired.

Tinubu dragged to court over failure to stop Wike, others from collecting double retirement benefits

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against President Bola Tinubu over an alleged failure to stop the former governors who are now serving as ministers in his administration from collecting life pensions and other ‘retirement benefits’ from their states while they serve as ministers. Kolawole Oluwadare, SERAP Deputy Director, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday. The ministers mentioned in the suit are Badaru Abubakar, Nyesom Wike, Bello Matawalle, Adegboyega Oyetola, and David Umahi. Others are: Simon Lalong; Atiku Bagudu; and Ibrahim Geidam. In the suit number FHC/L/CS/1855/2023 filed last Friday at the Federal High Court in Lagos, SERAP sought an order of mandamus to direct and compel President Tinubu to instruct the former governors who are now serving as ministers to stop collecting life pension, and other ‘retirement benefits’ from their respective states. The group also sought “a declaration that the failure by President Tinubu to publicly instruct former governors who are now serving as ministers to stop collecting life pensions, exotic cars, and other ‘retirement benefits’ from their states while serving as ministers, is a violation of his constitutional oath of office. “Compelling and directing President Tinubu to stop the former governors from collecting any ‘retirement benefits’ while serving as ministers would serve the public interest, especially given the current grave economic realities in the country. “The appointment of those who collect life pensions and other ‘retirement benefits’ as ministers is an arbitrary and unlawful exercise of discretion and presidential power of appointment.” “The Tinubu government has constitutional and international legal obligations to stop the former governors from collecting retirement benefits while serving as ministers. “The appointment of former governors who collect life pensions while serving as ministers is implicitly forbidden by the Nigerian Constitution 1999 [as amended] and the country’s international legal obligations. “Constitutional oath of office requires public officials to abstain from all improper acts, including collecting ‘retirement benefits’ while serving as ministers. This is inconsistent with the public trust and the overall objectives of the Constitution. A false oath lacks truth and justice. The oath statements require the oath takers to commit to uphold and and defend the Constitution. “Stopping the former governors from collecting double emoluments would ensure that the country’s wealth and resources are used for the common good and benefit of the socially and economically vulnerable Nigerians rather than to satisfy the opulent lifestyle of a few politicians. “Compelling President Tinubu to stop the former governors from collecting any ‘retirement benefits’ would ensure that the exercise of presidential power of appointment is entirely consistent with requirements of the Nigerian Constitution and the fundamental principles of integrity and honesty. “The following former governors are now ministers in the Tinubu administration: Badaru Abubakar (former governor of Jigawa State and Minister of Defence); and Nyesom Wike (former governor of River State and FCT Minister). “Others include Bello Matawalle (former governor of Zamfara State and Minister of State for Defence); Adegboyega Isiaka Oyetola (former governor of Osun State and Minister of Transportation); and David Umahi (Minister of Works). “Others are Simon Bako Lalong (former governor of Plateau State and Minister of Labour and Employment); Atiku Bagudu (former governor of Kebbi State and Minister of Budget and Economic Planning); Ibrahim Geidam (former governor of Yole State and Minister of Police of Affairs. “The states currently implementing life pensions and other ‘retirement benefits’ for former governors reportedly include Jigawa, Kebbi, Jigawa, Ebonyi, Yobe, and Rivers. These states owe workers’ salaries and remain the poorest in the country.” No date has been fixed for the hearing of the suit.

Wike presents 10 vehicles to FCT chiefs

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike presented 10 vehicles to third-class chiefs in the federal capital on Friday and promised improved welfare for traditional leaders. NAN reports that the third-class chiefs were from Gomani, Yaba, Bwari, Pai, Garki, Jiwa, Wako, Rubochi, Gwagwalada, and Zuba chiefdoms. Wike explained, while handing over the Nissan Semi SUV keys to the traditional rulers in Abuja, that the gesture was part of government’s efforts to ease the mobility of the traditional leaders. “Part of that is mobility. I can’t see how traditional rulers will be boarding taxis or entering public transportation. That is unacceptable. “President Bola Tinubu has directed that that should not be allowed to continue. He has asked that we do everything possible to make it convenient and easy for you to do your assignment,” Wike said. He stressed that, in line with the renewed agenda of President Tinubu, every stakeholder has a role to play, including traditional rulers, particularly in the area of security. “You know your communities better than anybody; you know the people within your communities, so you will be able to identify those who look like strangers. “No agency will perform its function without the support of traditional rulers, and we believe that we must partner together to achieve the fight against insecurity. “So, today, we are going to hand over 10 vehicles to you to please help in supporting the government to fight insecurity in your domain. Be sure that we are going to work together. “If we don’t work together, we will not achieve results because everybody is important in the fight against insecurity,” Wike said.

TECNO'S Innovation With Big Brother Naija Tasks Captivates Over 10million Viewers

In a world where entertainment knows no bounds, TECNO embarked on a journey that would not only redefine entertainment but also engage audiences on an unprecedented scale. By organizing two riveting tasks in the Big Brother Naija All-Stars house, TECNO set the stage for a technological revolution, showcasing the amazing capabilities of two of their frontline devices series; the TECNO CAMON 20 DOODLE EDITION and THE TECNO PHANTOM X2 PRO. The first task, which took place on August 12th, was a milestone in the Big Brother Naija All-Stars house. It marked a turning point where entertainment reached new heights. Housemates were challenged to unlock their creativity using the CAMON 20 series. This task was more than just a challenge; it was an exploration of the device's capabilities in the hands of budding entertainers who got their creative caps on as they had to create 4 music videos for songs of the afrobeat queen Tiwa Savage. Winners emerged and the audience was not left out of the reward pool.         The anticipation reached a crescendo with the arrival of the second task, the PHANTOM V Fold Vlog Challenge, on September 13th. Housemates were divided into four dynamic teams: PHANTOM X2, PHANTOM X2 PRO, PHANTOM V Fold, and PHANTOM V Fold 5G. This challenge was a game-changer, divided into two phases that would forever alter the trajectory of digital entertainment. In the first phase of the challenge, the teams engaged in the intense and thrilling PHANTOM Ball Challenge, where the PHANTOM V Fold 5G team emerged as the triumphant victors, setting the stage for the subsequent phase.       The heart of the PHANTOM V Fold Vlog Challenge was the Vloggers' Showcase, where housemates became digital content creators. They harnessed the power of their PHANTOM devices to embark on a captivating journey, beginning with a 3-minute Outfit Vlog that showcased their fashion creativity. This was followed by another 3-minute vlog that offered viewers a glimpse into the world of wardrobes and local fashion stores set within the Arena of the house. TECNO's cutting-edge technology beautifully captured the elegance and possibilities of the fashion realm. Lastly, the housemates crafted a 1-minute video that demonstrated how TECNO devices empower vloggers, turning ordinary moments into extraordinary content. To conclude their creative journey, they used the set to create 10 captivating images that portrayed various aspects of the vlogging lifestyle, making a lasting impact on judges and audiences alike.   As the curtain fell on the PHANTOM V Fold Vlog Challenge, one team stood head and shoulders above the rest - PHANTOM V Fold 5G. Tinubu to depart Abuja Sunday for UNGA in New York

President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja, the nation’s capital, on Sunday to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) 2023, which will be held in New York, United States of America.   The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, who confirmed this on Friday, said that the President, besides the main event of the UNGA, will be meeting with key economic stakeholders around the world.   “Aside from the engagements he’s going to be having at the General Assembly, aside from the act of participation that the Nigerian delegation will be engaging in at the Assembly, there are a series of very important side activities that will have wide-ranging ramifications on the Nigerian economy.   “Following Mr President’s successful trip to New Delhi for the G-20 Summit, and the staggering amount of investment he has been able to attract to Nigeria in a very short period of time, he is going to continue advancing very aggressively on his economic development and diplomatic drive to attract foreign direct investment into the country,” Ngelale said.   He affirmed that the President will be having meetings with major chief executives and leaders of multinational firms, including Brad Smith, the President of Microsoft Company Worldwide; Sir Nick Clegg, the President of Global Affairs for Meta Technologies; and the CEOs of General Electric and Exxon Mobil.   According to him, the president’s engagements will include bilateral meetings on the sidelines with the presidents of the United States, Comoros, South Africa, and the European Union Commission.   Tinubu will also be meeting with the prime ministers of Spain and the Netherlands, the King of Jordan, and the presidents of Algeria and Brazil.   “It’s still dynamic. There are some that will still be added, but it’s fair to say that within a very short few days in New York, His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will certainly be one of the most active and one of the most sought-after heads of state with respect to his engagement in both bilateral and multilateral platforms,” Ngelale stated.

How fire caused nationwide blackout – Power minister

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has revealed that fire outbreak caused the nationwide blackout in Nigeria on Thursday.   Theere is widespread blackout across the country following the total collapse of Nigeria’s electricity grid early Thursday morning.   It was gathered that the grid collapsed totally around 12:40 a.m., leading to the massive loss of supply to power distributors nationwide.   But giving details of what led to the development in a Facebook posts on Thursday, the minister explained that a fire outbreak at Kainji/Jebba located in the North-central caused the blackout.   Adelabu said, “At 00:35Hrs this morning, a fire outbreak with explosion sound was observed on Kainji/Jebba 330kV line 2 (Cct K2J) blue phase CVT & Blue phase line Isolator of Kainji/Jebba 330kV line 1 was observed burning. This led to sharp drops in frequency from 50.29Hz to 49.67 Hz at 0:35:06Hrs with Jebba generation loss of 356.63MW.    “Kainji started dropping load from 451.45 MW at 00:35:07Hrs to zero. At 00:41Hrs frequency dropped further from 49.37 Hz to 48.41Hz then resulted in system collapse of the grid.   “We are on top of the situation and speedy restoration is in progress. The fire has been fully arrested and over half of the connections are now up and the rest will be fully restored in no time.   “My sincere appreciation to those who responded or expressed concern via different channels and the team of Engineers for their prompt response to the situation and work done so far. Let’s get the restoration work completed as soon as possible.   “Delay in update was deliberate, so as not to cause panic and to also be able to update on progress of remedial actions taken so far.   “This is to ensure economic and security saboteurs don’t take advantage of every situation reported.”

Wike not recognised as FCT Minister on FCDA website

Former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, is yet to be recognised as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, by the Federal Capital Development Authority FCDA on its official website,
https://www.fcda.gov.ng/.   This is despite the Ikwere-born politician being inaugurated as the 18th FCT minister on August 16, 2023.   Wike, alongside the Minister of State, Mariya Mahmud, officially assumed office on August 21, ready to steer the ship of the Federal Capital Territory.   However, a routine check of the FCDA website indicates that the website still prominently featureS the picture and details of Mohammed Bello as the FCT Minister.   The delay in recognising Wike on the website has fueled speculation over whether it reflects a bureaucratic oversight, an internal dispute, or perhaps a deeper issue surrounding Wike’s appointment.   Critics have pointed out that such an omission could potentially impact the day-to-day operations and communication within the FCT. Adding a layer of intrigue to the situation, Wike yesterday expressed his displeasure with the staff of FCTA.

We won’t tolerate lawlessness, violation of building codes in Ogun – Abiodun

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on Monday, warned that the state government will not tolerate lawlessness and the violation of the state’s building codes. The governor also denied any political motives in the partial demolition of DATKEM Plaza, Ijebu-Ode. Prince Abiodun formally reacted to the demolition and the attendant accusation after inspecting the 8-kilometre Mowe-Ofada Road, in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of the state. According to the governor, the partial demolition exercise carried out by the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development was in line with the laws of the state. He denied accusations in some quarters that the exercise was political, adding that necessary steps were taken by government officials when contraventions were observed in the course of constructing the edifice. The governor noted that in Ogun State, and Nigeria, nobody is above the law. The law that governs ordinary citizens, according to him, also applies to the VIPs. He said: “But for the fact you have ambushed me, I was not prepared to formally address that subject matter. And the reasons are very simple, we are a responsible government. We are responsible to our citizens. We are a law-abiding administration. I’m sure that everyone would testify to the fact that since I assumed office in 2019, I have ensured equity, fairness and upheld the rule of law. I have not in any way attempted to be vindictive or in any form or manner appear like someone who is trying to witch-hunt anyone. “Having said that, because these are some of the insinuations I have read on social media and nothing could be farther from the truth. You all have seen the position of the Ministry of Physical Planning, which is the ministry that is entrusted with ensuring that people adhere to our different building codes. Because if we don’t respect building codes, if we don’t abide by building laws, it means that we are nothing but a chaotic society. “These are the people charged with ensuring that our cities and towns are well laid out, well planned and the buildings that are constructed are safe to live in. We are all living witnesses to what has happened in the state and Lagos State when buildings have collapsed. And proactively, our government and across the country have brought some buildings down for violations of different building regulations. “Only a few weeks ago, the new minister of the FCT said any person who builds in FCT without approval no matter how highly placed they are, be it a minister or anybody, the building will come down. And recalled sometime last year, when a building collapsed on Gerald in Lagos, a building that belonged to someone that I know personally, I held a press conference and said we would not allow for this to happen in Ogun State. You build without approval, you build beyond your approval, if you don’t build in line with our regulations, that building will come down. “Now, let’s go to this DATKEM. First I can assure you that our physical planning team do not have the responsibility of unmasking who the owner of a company is. It is beyond their mandate. As far as they know, a company called DATKEM had applied for approval to erect a five-story building. That approval was filed in 2009, way beyond our administration. But sometime in 2022, a contravention notice was sent to the owners of DATKEM. “In Ogun State and in Nigeria, we don’t have a set of laws for the common man and the VIP. That is not the way it works. There is one law for everybody. Nobody is above the law. And the law is not the respecter of VIPs or VIPPs. So, they sent the contravention notice to DATKEM, regardless of who the owner of DATKEM was, which was not their priority. After they sent that contravention notice in May 2022, they sent a stop order notice to DATKEM, saying you are in contravention, stop working on this project until you come and correct these contraventions. They followed that stop order with another stop order. They sent a violation order. They sealed the premises. “The owners of DATKEM in their minds must have felt they were above the law. It smirks of impunity if the Ministry of Physical Planning sends you a contravention order, sends you a seal order and you continue with the construction in violation of the safety of all of us in Ogun State. “They sent you a demolition order, you still did not respond. You begin to sneak into the building at night, you begin to work there. You begin to attempt to grease palms so that they can overlook your contraventions. But, of course, a day of reckoning will always come.” The governor said properties are demolished every day in the state without any noise being made, adding that he had instructed that if his property violates state laws, it should be brought down. Addressing the accusation of vindictiveness, the governor recalled his intervention in another property belong to the alleged owner of DATKEM. He said: “Let me take you down memory lane. The purported owner of this property, when I assumed office in 2019, had a property in Abeokuta. It was meant to be a hotel. My predecessor had sealed that property for eight years. He had issued a stop order. He was going to demolish that building, but for my intervention. I pleaded with him. That building remained under lock and key until I resumed office. The first day I was sworn in was the very day the owner moved into that property for the first time in eight years. And today, the property is called Conference Hotel in Abeokuta. “How do you now begin to accuse the same me that facilitated the completion of that project despite different court actions that were brought then, despite different charges by the EFCC that were hanging around the project. I actually commissioned that project alongside the former vice president, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo. You are now trying to use media, trying to attract unnecessary sympathy, playing the underdog that I, Dapo Abiodun, demolished a property that first I didn’t know it was yours; your name is not on that property. You never came forward to say this property is yours. “You expect that someone, who is a serving senator, a former governor of this state, would show a level of more responsibility. I have said it that I, Dapo Abiodun, if I have a building that violates the building code, bring it down. “And by this, I am sending a strong warning to all of us across the state. There are many of you who have buildings without approvals. There are many of you who don’t even have C of O. If you have built without approvals, the long arm of the law will soon be catching up with you. We will not tolerate lawlessness in this state. We will not be defined by lawlessness and half hazard development when you just build anyhow.”

Subsidy removal: Governors get 7 days to disclose how they spent N2bn palliative

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has urged the 36 state governors in the country to give details of how they spent the N2 billion palliative given t them by the Federal Government. The group, in a letter dated September 9, 2023, and signed by deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, asked the governors to reveal the names of beneficiaries and details of the reliefs so far provided. It said Nigerians are eagerly waiting to see the details of how palliative was spent because they have the right to know. The group said by doing so, transparency and accountability would be encouraged and corruption would be reduced. “We would be grateful if the recommended measures are taken within seven days of the receipt and/or publication of this letter,” the group said. SERAP said that failure to do so within the time given, would make it take all appropriate legal actions to compel the governors to comply.

AFCON Qualifier: It’ll be difficult to beat Sao Tome 10-0 again – Peseiro

Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro insisted it would be difficult for his team to repeat the 10-0 annihilation of Sao Tome and Principe. The three-time African champions humiliated the True Patriots to record their biggest win in Agadir, Morocco, last year. There are expectations the Super Eagles will record another big victory against Adriano Eusebio’s side this evening at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo. Peseiro has, however, warned it will be difficult to repeat the feat. “It will not be easy to repeat 10-0, that’s a big record,” Peseiro told a press conference in Uyo. “The promise is we will give the maximum to score goals, to win and finish top of the group because we are the best team in the group. “I have a fantastic group and good atmosphere and with these we can beat any team.”

Naira strengthens, trades at N736/$ at I&E window

The naira, on Thursday, appreciated to N736.62 per dollar at the investors and exporters (I&E) window.   The I&E window is the country’s official exchange rate window.   The foreign exchange (FX) rate movement represents a 4.53 percent appreciation of the local currency from the N771.59 recorded on the last trading day.   Data from FMDQ Securities Exchange, a platform that oversees FX trading in Nigeria, showed that the official window recorded a low of N700 and a high of N799.90 to the dollar on Thursday.   FMDQ said trading opened at N774.74 and closed at the rate of N736.62; adding that the daily FX market turnover at the I&E window totalled $66.43 million.   In its August newsletter, named ‘FMDQ Spotlight’, the company said the total turnover for January to July 2023, amounted to $235.16 billion (N122.14 trillion).   Last Friday, Wale Edun, minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy, said the last time the foreign exchange (FX) rate was stable, was a decade ago.    “If we think back to when was the last time the economy was stable, when it was growing, when inflation was low, when the exchange rate was stable, and when interest rates were affordable; that period was about a decade ago,” he said.   The minister added that “economic growth was about 6 percent around 2013 to 2014”.

BREAKING: ‘The war is not over’ — Atiku rejects tribunal judgement

Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president, has rejected the judgement of the presidential election petition tribunal.   Abubakar, who was the presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 25 polls, spoke on Thursday at a press conference held at the party’s headquarters in Abuja.   On Wednesday, the tribunal upheld the election of President Bola Tinubu.   Abubakar said he challenged Tinubu’s victory at the presidential election tribunal because he believes the court is the “sanctuary of justice”.   The former vice-president said the verdict given by the court “failed to restore confidence in our dreams of free and fair elections devoid of human manipulations”.   “Like I did say at the beginning of this legal battle when I instructed my lawyers to file my petition challenging the outcome of the presidential election, my ultimate goal in this pursuit is to ensure that democracy is further strengthened through the principles and processes of fair hearing,” Abubakar said.   “Gentlemen of the press, I take great pains to tell you that the decision of the court of first instance on this matter utterly falls far short of that expectation.”   Abubakar said though he respects the judgement of the court, he does not accept it.   “I refuse to accept the judgment because I believe that it is bereft of substantial justice. However, the disappointment in the verdict of the court can never destroy my confidence in the judiciary.”   The former vice-president said he is no stranger to legal battles and has asked his lawyers to file an appeal at the supreme court.   “I can say that I have a fair idea of how the court system works. All through my career as a politician, I have been a fighter, and I must say that I have found the judiciary as a worthy pillar to rest on in the pursuit of justice,” he said.    “It is my conviction that the electoral process in Nigeria should be devoid of untidy manipulations and that the outcome of every election should be a perfect reflection of the wishes of the electorate.”   “I believe that such is the only way through which our democracy can have a manifest expression of its true meaning. Whether I prevail in this quest or not, the record of my effort in ensuring an order of credible elections in Nigeria shall remain for future generations to evaluate.”   The PDP candidate asked his supporters to remain steadfast, saying he would win the war of restoring confidence in our electoral system.   “On this note, I urge all my supporters to remain steadfast. I urge them to take solace in an immortal lesson I learned from my leader and mentor, the late Shehu Yar’Adua, that losing a battle is less important than losing the war.    “We might have lost a battle yesterday, but the war is well ahead of us. And I believe that with our hopes in God, we shall win the war of restoring confidence in our electoral system.”

Tribunal rejects 15 witnesses in Atiku case against Tinubu

The Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal, on Wednesday, rejected 15 out of the 27 witnesses presented by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, for failing to establish his case against the victory of President Bola Tinubu in the February 25 presidential election.   The Tribunal gave the verdict through one of the five-man panel, Justice Stephen Adah.   The Tribunal rejected the testimonies of the 15 witnesses on the grounds that the petitioner failed to file their statements on oath along with the petition.   It further disclosed that the petitioner could not file the statements on oath before the close of the 21-day window given from the date election result was announced.

BREAKING: Tribunal strikes out Atiku’s petition against Tinubu

The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Abubakar Atiku on Wednesday suffered a major setback in his legal battle to unseat Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Nigeria’s elected President.   This is as the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal struck out several paragraphs of the petition he relied upon to push for Tinubu’s removal.   Also several exhibits, including witnesses’ statements he tendered to establish his allegations of irregularities, malpractices against the February 25 presidential election were rejected and dis-countenanced by the Tribunal.   Delivering ruling in some objections argued by Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN, on behalf of Tinubu, Justice Moses Ugoh held that several parts of Atiku’s petition have no legs upon which they can stand and survive, hence, not competent.   Like the fate that befell his counterpart in the Labour Party’s Peter Obi, the court said several facts fundermentally required to support the petition were not provided by Atiku.   Among others, Atiku was said to have failed and neglected to name places where ballot boxes were snatched, the ways and manners the BVAS machine were manipulated and names of polling boots where alleged malpractices took place.   The petitioner, who claimed to have polled majority of lawful votes, was said to have failed to state in clear terms, the total lawful votes he claimed to have scored.   The Court held that Atiku alleged that Tinubu did not score majority of lawful votes but refused to make the perceived lawful votes known in his petition to the Tribunal.   Similarly, the Tribunal said that the former Vice President made grievous allegations against Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello and Chairman of Olamaboro Local Government of Kogi, Friday Adejoh but neglected to join them as respondents in the petition.   Justice Ugoh held that failure to join the Governor, who was accused of electoral fraud, was fatal to the petition because the Governor was denied opportunity to defend himself as required by law.   The Tribunal dismissed the the allegations of over voting all over Nigeria by the petitioner, adding that such pleadings run foul of the law because the specific places where the alleged over voting took place were not mentioned.   Atiku’s petition was also faulted on the ground that it introduced several facts and allegations in unlawful ways that caught the respondents unaware, adding that the tactic employed was unfair and made him clever by half.   Among the offending new facts said to have been wrongfully introduced by Atiku were the allegations of criminal conviction, certificate forgery, dual citizenship of Guinea made against Tinubu outside the mode of filing petition.   Justice Stephen Jonah Adah who read another ruling on objections against the petition expunged several documents tendered by Atiku on the ground that the exhibits were made during the pendency of the petition.   Also the evidence of several key witnesses of Atiku were expunged from the Court record having been made in manners not known to law.   The Tribunal held that the wrongful mode adopted by the PDP’s presidential candidate in the construction of the petition made several paragraphs of the petition liable for striking out for want of merit.

Police warn against unguarded utterances ahead of presidential tribunal judgement

The Nigeria police have warned against the spread of misinformation and unguarded utterances ahead of the presidential tribunal judgement on Wednesday.   On Monday, the tribunal fixed Wednesday, for ruling on the petitions challenging the victory of President Bola Tinubu in the February 25 election.   The Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have approached the tribunal to challenge Tinubu’s victory.   Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police spokesperson, in a statement on Tuesday, said the force “will not condone activities capable of inciting violence or causing a descent into anarchy”.   He said the police have deployed officers across the country to forestall any breakdown of law and order as a result of the outcome of the ruling.   “The Nigeria police force has strengthened its deployment across the length and breadth of Nigeria. The police wish to reiterate the commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property before, during, and after the judgement,” the statement reads.   “The NPF has diligently emplaced all necessary deployments and security measures during this critical period as officers and men are fully prepared to maintain order and enforce laws while respecting the rights and freedoms of all citizens.   “Furthermore, the NPF strongly cautions all individuals, including mischief makers and political gladiators, to be cautious in their actions and statements as the Force will not condone activities capable of inciting violence or causing a descent into anarchy.   “It is imperative for all citizens to embrace peace and maintain calm, regardless of their political affiliations, to ensure a peaceful and secure environment.”   Earlier today, Tukur Gusau, the director of information at the defence headquarters (DHQ), warned those who might be grooming the idea of violence on Wednesday to discard it   Gusau added that the army in collaboration with other security agencies would not fold its arms and allow anyone to instigate trouble.

Banks, insurance firms to join NLC’s two-day strike

The National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE) says its members will join the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in its two-day strike action.   NLC recently announced plans to embark on a nationwide strike to protest the hike in petrol pump price, electricity tariff, alongside other issues, and accused the federal government of abandoning negotiations.   The congress also said the government has failed to implement some of the resolutions reached at previous meetings.   The industrial action is scheduled to start on Tuesday, September 5, 2023.   Aligning with the movement, NUBIFIE in a statement signed by Mohammed Sheikh, its general secretary, directed all members to stay off duty during the two-day strike.   This means that workers in Nigerian banks such as GTB,  Zenith Bank, Access Bank as well as insurance companies, are likely to stay off work.   “In line with the communique issued after the meeting of National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) held on Thursday 31 August 2023 that all affiliates should direct all its members to commence two days’ withdrawal of services from Tuesday September 5 and Wednesday September 6, 2023,” the statement, dated September 2, 2023, reads.    “The directive is imperative to get the needed attention of the government and warn it of its new found love of meddling in the internal affairs of unions rather than address the punishing economic circumstances we find ourselves in.   “We hereby direct all our organs to comply with this directive by ensuring all our members stay off duty for the two days.   Commenting on the union’s resolve to join the strike on Tuesday, Abakpa Anthony, president NUBIFIE, said members of the bank and insurance companies were also being affected by the economic hardship.   “You know we are also part of the suffering, hence the reason why we must join the NLC in the strike, “Anthony said.    “The directive stands unless the federal government says otherwise.”

Aisha Yesufu kicks as EFCC hires influencer arrested for fraud to sensitize NYSC members

Human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, has reacted to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) decision to engage the services of popular social media influencer, Adedamola Adewale, a.k.a. Adeherself, to sensitize serving corps members on the dangers of cybercrime.   Recall that the EFCC had in June 2020 arrested Adeherself for cyber fraud and was granted N500,000 bail by an Ikeja Special Offences Court in July.   In February 2023, the Commission rearraigned the social media influencer before an Ikeja High Court over an alleged N7.9 million internet fraud. On a three-count charge of conspiracy to obtain money by false pretences, attempt to obtain money by false pretences and retention of proceeds of criminal conduct.   However, the EFCC unveiled the defendant as a stakeholder in its anti-graft war and further engaged her to admonish corps members to shun cybercrime.   In a post on its official X, the anti-graft agency said Adeherself was a speaker during a sensitization programme organized by the commission at the NYSC orientation camp in Iyana Ipaja, Lagos.   Aisha Yesufu, reacting to the development on her official X, stated that “In Nigeria, crime is not the issue as long as it is done big time. Petty crime is what is criminalized.”

FG shuts Lagos int’l airport for repairs, suspends Nigeria Air project

Festus Keyamo, the minister of aviation and aerospace development, has directed all airlines to vacate the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, from October 1, 2023.   Keyamo gave the directive on Thursday during a tour of the airport, accompanied by Kabir Mohammed, managing director of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).   Speaking to journalists, Keyamo said the relocation was necessary to give room for total maintenance work at the airport.   Keyamo directed the airlines and companies operating in the airport to move to the new terminal — MMIA terminal two.    “All airlines should vacate the MMIA before October 1 and relocate to MMIA Terminal 2,” he said.   Former President Muhammadu Buhari, in March 2022, inaugurated the new terminal — a facility that sits on a landmass of approximately 56,000 square metres. FG SUSPENDS NIGERIA AIR PROJECT, AIRPORTS CONCESSIONING   Keyamo also announced the suspension of airports concessions and the Nigeria Air project.   The concessioning of airports and the national carrier were two major projects under the aviation roadmap implemented by the immediate past administration of Buhari.   The minister said the projects would be put on hold until further notice. Two weeks before Buhari handed over to the new administration of President Bola Tinubu, the federal executive council (FEC) approved the concessioning of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, and the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano.   Likewise, the ministry of aviation, under Hadi Sirika, ex-minister, unveiled Nigeria Air — three days to the end of the administration.   The development elicited angst among stakeholders nationwide and was labelled ‘a fraud’ by the house of representatives.
