Consider appointing Fani-Kayode as minister, He’ll work far better…— Bwala tells Tinubu

Daniel Bwala, an aide to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 general election, has urged President Bola Tinubu to appoint a former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode as a minister.   In a post on X on Monday, Bwala called on the president to appoint FFK, noting that his experience as a former minister will impact positively his government.   He said, “I call on President Tinubu to consider appointing Femi Fani Kayode as a minister of the republic.   “Femi has worked hard enough like every other appointee; but aside from that, he being a pragmatic person with previous experience will impact PBAT’s government.   Bwala also stated he’s confident Fani-Kayode will ‘work far better’ than some ministers.   “I have never spoken with FFK on this, as a matter of fact, we only met twice in this life, one before he joined APC and the second at SSS HQRs where he was attending fellowship at the time. BUT I KNOW FEMI WILL WORK far better than some who are on the Job right now.”   Fani-Kayode was the Director of Special Media Projects & Operations & New Media for the Tinubu/Shettima Pres. Campaign Council in the 2023 general elections.   Recall that President Tinubu on Monday, August 21 swore in 45 ministers cleared by the Senate, as Nigerians were surprised to see notable names like Fani-Kayode, Faleke, Onanuga and many others, prominent for their immense contribution during the election campaign, missing on the list.

Wike frowns at congratulatory billboards, advertorials in his honour

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has requested well-wishers to refrain from placing congratulatory billboards in his honour. The Director of Press, Office of the Minister, Mr Anthony Ogunleye, stated this in a statement in Abuja on Sunday. He said, “The attention of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has been drawn to lamp post billboards, full-scale billboards, and other adverts congratulating him on his appointment as minister. “While the minister deeply appreciates the warm wishes and support of the citizens, he kindly, but strongly requests that such billboards and advertisements be discontinued forthwith. “The minister acknowledges the overwhelming goodwill from the residents of the FCT and beyond understands the sentiment behind these congratulatory displays and is genuinely touched by the show of support. “However, in the spirit of public service and commitment to his responsibilities, the minister wishes to focus his full attention on assisting President Bola Tinubu in realising his vision and renewed hope agenda for Nigeria,” he said. Ogunleye said that Wike’s foremost duty lies in contributing to the development and growth of the FCT and the well-being of residents and the nation as a whole. He added that the minister held in high regard, the aspirations and expectations of the FCT residents, and he remained dedicated to fulfilling his role with utmost sincerity and dedication. According to him, this can be achieved by concentrating all efforts on the task at hand and joining hands with public servants to serve the country to the best of their abilities. “Wike sincerely hopes that the public will understand his perspective and continue to extend their support and cooperation. “He looks forward to working hand in hand with all stakeholders to build a stronger, more prosperous, and united FCT and Nigeria,” the director said. PDP, Adebutu’s case against Abiodun pack of lies, distortions – APC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the March 18 governorship election in Ogun State, Hon. Ladi Adebutu, are on a wild goose chase at the Ogun State Election Petitions Tribunal, as their petitions rest on inconsistencies and distortions, Governor Dapo Abiodun and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have said. Abiodun and the Ogun State Chapter of the APC made this submission in their final written addresses as respondents in the case brought against them, arguing that the petitioners did an awful job and failed to prove their case. This, they said, was because Adebutu and PDP presented tutored and unreliable witnesses, relied on documents that contradicted their witnesses’ case, and presented experts whose testimonies and documents lacked probative value. They argued that Adebutu and PDP who are accused of vote buying with credible evidence, have unclean hands and could not receive equity with those unclean hands. They further said that out of the 87 witnesses of the petitioners, 38 stated they were polling unit agents but did not tender any evidence to prove their claim, adding that the 49 who testified as voters testified the same thing word for word, making the same mistakes, thereby creating a situation where the tribunal ought to hold that their depositions were too obvious to be coincidental and were therefore unbelievable and of no probative value. Arguing that the petition itself was based on provisions of the Electoral Act that do not support the margin of lead principle, Abiodun/APC contended that while the Margin of Lead principle is rooted in section 134 of the Electoral Act, the petition is based on sections 24, 47, 51, and 62 of the Electoral Act. Relying on the Supreme Court verdict in Oyetola v. Adeleke, they argued that the petitioners did not prove overvoting, as Adebutu did not tender the BVAS machines for any of the 990 units complained about and did not even tender any BVAS machine. Again, while noting that the petitioners expressly stated that Governor Abiodun was “duly sponsored” by APC, the respondents said Adebutu did not present any evidence to back his forgery allegation against Abiodun, and that at the governor’s request, the Tribunal summoned a WAEC official who produced a certified copy of the same certificate that the governor submitted to INEC. They further said that while the petitioners claimed that Governor Abiodun should not be Governor because he had been convicted in Miami, USA, they provided no judgment in evidence of the alleged conviction. Arguing that non-qualification is different from disqualification, Abiodun/APC said that even if such judgment exists, it relates to events that purportedly happened 37 years ago, whereas a disqualifying conviction must occur within the last ten years preceding the candidate’s election. They added that while the petitioners claimed that Adebutu and PDP scored the majority of lawful votes after APC’s unlawful votes are deducted and their own excluded votes added, they never proved the unlawful votes credited to Governor Abiodun or the source of their excluded votes, even as the figures in the petition (63,015 and 35,228) conflicted with the figures in their witness’ report (62,998 and 34,368). Finally, while indicating that the petitioners provided no admissible evidence to prove their allegations of vote-buying against Governor Abiodun, the respondents drew the tribunal’s attention to the massive and proven details of vote-buying conducted by Adebutu during the election, which had been established in two police investigation reports and for which Adebutu (now at large) and other PDP chieftains are standing criminal trial.

Guardiola to miss next two Premier League games after back surgery

Manchester City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, will be absent from the next two Premier League games after undergoing minor back surgery in Barcelona. This was contained in a statement on Tuesday via the Premier League champions’ official website, www.mancity.com, saying Guardiola had been struggling with back pain for some time and has undergone emergency surgery in Barcelona. The statement reads, “Pep Guardiola has today undergone a routine operation on a back problem. “The Manchester City boss has been suffering from severe back pain for some time lately and flew out to Barcelona for emergency surgery performed by Dr Mireia Illueca. The surgery was a success, and Pep will now recover and rehabilitate in Barcelona. “In his absence, assistant manager Juanma Lillo will oversee the coaching of the first team on the training field and will assume duties on the touchline until Pep’s return. He is expected to return after the forthcoming international break. “Everyone at Manchester City wishes Pep a speedy recovery, and looks forward to seeing him back in Manchester soon.” Skysports reports that Guardiola’s surgery was successful but he will continue his rehabilitation in the city. The 52-year-old is not expected to be back on the touchline for City until after the international break, meaning he will miss this Sunday’s trip to Sheffield United, live on Sky Sports, as well as the visit of Fulham on September 2. This is not the first time Man City have had to cope without their manager since Guardiola first came to the Etihad Stadium in the summer of 2016. A Champions League touchline ban in the middle of 2018 meant Guardiola put Mikel Arteta in charge for the visit of Lyon in September of that year, a group-stage game which City lost 2-1. Also, at the beginning of 2022, Guardiola missed an FA Cup third round-tie at Swindon Town due to contracting coronavirus.

Probe still ongoing, we’ve not indicted JAMB registrar -Reps panel

The house of representatives ad hoc committee investigating job racketeering in federal ministeris, departments and agencies (MDA’s), says the panel has not indicted Ishaq Oloyede, registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).   On August 14, Oloyede was invitied to appear before the committe to explain why the board employed 300 workers without advertising.   Oloyede had said the recruitment of the new 300 workers was done to fill vacancies in the board created by the retirement of some members of staff.   Members of the committee had alleged that the examination body had been undertaking employment without due process of advertisement and shortlisting qualified job seekers before letters were issued.   The lawmakers noted that the agency had been getting waivers for the recruitment of staff yet it failed to adhere to the provisions of the law on non-engagement of more than 100 staff annually.   They said available documents showed that the board in 2021 employed more than 300 staff in a single recruitment exercise without adhering to the extant provision of law on the issue.   At the resumed hearing on Thursday, Yusuf Gagdi, chairman of the panel, said it was wrong to insinuate that the committee has indicted the JAMB registrar while it was still carrying out its assignment.    “I want to say it here that as a matter of fact, not take any report of indictment against anybody. This committee has not indicted the Registrar of JAMB and we have not indicted any institution,” Gagdi said.   “You can only say that after we submit our report. There are reports going out that we have indicted JAMB Registrar. No, we have not submitted any report anywhere and so, don’t quote us out of context please.   “We had a very good interaction with him and nobody should preempt the decision of this committee to say that somebody is faulty.”

‘Job racketeering’: We were paid salaries without working, beneficiaries tell reps panel

Fourteen persons on Monday told a house of representatives ad hoc committee how they were receiving salaries from the federal government without working with any agency.   The ad-hoc committee chaired by Yusuf Gagdi is investigating job racketeering by ministries, departments and agencies and also mismanagement of the integrated payroll and personnel information system (IPPIS).   The beneficiaries also told the committee that they paid money to Haruna Kolo, a former IPPIS desk officer and chief of protocol to  Muheeba Dankaka, chairperson of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), for job offers.   Recall Kolo had alleged that job seekers paid millions of naira into his personal accounts for him to take to  Dankaka.   The FCC chairperson has denied any wrongdoing, alleging that it is corruption that is fighting back.   Gbadamosi Jalo, one of the beneficiaries, said Kolo took him to the IPPIS office and registered him on its portal, adding that he had been receiving salaries since then.   Jalo told the committee he had not been assigned to any government ministry, department or agency — but was given an appointment letter supposedly issued by the National Institute of Oceanography.   He further told the panel that one Gambo Yisha’u, driver to the commissioner representing Taraba at the FCC also confirmed to him that such money ended up with the chairperson.   Twelve other witnesses made similar submissions alleging that they paid money to Kolo, but had not been posted to any ministry, department or agency of government.   While speaking, Gagdi said the witnesses were invited by the committee to know about their statements of account and payment to Kolo.   Gagdi reiterated that the panel would get to the root of the matter and recommend appropriate sanctions.   Meanwhile, Ishaq Oloyede, the registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), also explained to the committee why the examination body employed 300 people without advertising.   Oloyede said the recruitment of the 300 people was done to fill vacancies in the board created by the retirement of some members of staff.   Members of the committee alleged that the examination body had been undertaking employment without due process of advertisement and shortlisting qualified job seekers before letters are issued.

I’ve no hand in ex-APC Chair, Adamu’s political misfortune — Gov Sule

The Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has dismissed insinuations that he masterminded the political misfortune of a former governor of the state and immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Abdullahi Adamu. The governor also debunked claims that he was against the political aspirations of the immediate past governor of the state, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura. The governor, on Tuesday, through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Comrade Peter Ahemba, said he is committed to continuing to work with his predecessors towards making Nasarawa State a better place for all of its residents. He said, “The attention of Governor Abdullahi Sule has been drawn to a media publication in one of the national dailies with the headline, ‘How Gov Sule Plotted the Exit of Adamu, Al-Makura in Nasarawa Politics’. “It is public knowledge that the governor has remained consistent in the support of his predecessors, Senators Abdullahi Adamu and Tanko Al-Makura. “It is pertinent to state that Governor Sule has no hand in the political squabbles that led to Senator Abdullahi Adamu’s resignation as National Chairman of the APC. “It is mischievous for anyone to insinuate or accuse the governor of being responsible for the internal disagreement among members of the National Working Committee of the party that led to the voluntary resignation of Senator Abdullahi Adamu. The unfortunate development has nothing absolutely to do with the governor. “It is on record that Governor Sule was the first APC Governor to openly declare support for Nasarawa State to have the position of National Chairman of the ruling party and worked relentlessly for its realisation. How then will the governor turn around to destroy the house he contributed immensely to the building? “Also, recently, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) requested all governors of the APC controlled states to submit three names each for him to consider one out of the names and nominate/appoint as minister, and Senator Tanko Al-Makura’s name featured prominently on the list that was submitted. “The appointment of ministers is solely the prerogative of Mr. President to consider and appoint whoever he wants from each state as a member of the Federal Executive Council, and Governor Sule’s powers to determine who is appointed a minister is limited. This is a fact everyone, including the author of the ill-intended publication, should know. “Governor Sule has continued to accord tremendous respect for the founding fathers of the state, including the duo of Senators Adamu and Al-Makura for their role towards the progress and development of the state and will not look back in this regard. “The former governors should be wary of mischief makers and disregard the said publication in its entirety as it has no iota of truth. It is baseless, unfounded, and a failed attempt by enemies of the state who are bent on causing unnecessary acrimony among political leaders in the state.”

Lagos not ‘no man’s land’, it’s insulting to think so- Igbo Group

Ndigboamaka progressive markets association, a group made of traders from 58 markets across Lagos, says the state is not a “no man’s land”.   During a recent conference themed: “Catalyzing partnership with traders through innovation, technology, analytical and sustainability,” the group asked Igbo traders in the state to disregard the school of thought that Lagos is a no man’s land.   Chinedu Ukatu and Anthony Okeke, president and secretary-general of the group, in a communique cautioned Igbos that “while they live in Lagos and do business and make a living, they should not in any way suggest that Lagos is a no man’s land”.   “The conference agreed that it is erroneous and insulting to think so.    “The conference also expressed sadness at the occasional diatribe between Yoruba and Igbo in Lagos state as is currently the case.”   The group also called on the government to address multiple taxes by agencies at ports and at various markets, and urged traders to make use of technology in their daily activities.   The group commended Benjamin Kalu, deputy speaker of the house of representatives; Ohanaeze Ndigbo; Peter Mbah, governor of Enugu state; Hope Uzodinma, governor of Imo state; and Alex Otti, governor of Abia state; for their efforts in ensuring that there is harmonious relationship and understanding between the Igbos and Yorubas in Lagos.

Lagos announces traffic diversion, set to install truck barriers along Funsho Williams

The Lagos government has announced the diversion of traffic along Funsho Williams Avenue to allow for the installation of truck barriers.   The state government said traffic will be diverted along the route for three nights between 10pm to 6am, effective from today.   In a statement released on Thursday, the government asked motorists to use alternative routes during the installation.   “Motorists from Eko Bridge/Costain/Iponri inbound Ojuelegba/Alhaji Masha Road will be diverted to the service lane from Alaka via National Stadium gate to link Barracks or Alhaji Masha Road to continue their journeys,” the statement reads.    “Motorists from Eko Bridge via Costain and those from Apapa Road going through Iponri will make use of Iponri Estate road to link Bode Thomas via Adeniran Ogunsanya to Shitta Roundabout for their desired destinations.”   The government added that the installation is in line with the prohibition of trucks and articulated vehicles on some bridges within the state.   Recently, Lagos has witnessed a spate of accidents involving heavy-duty vehicles at bridges.   In January, nine bus passengers were killed when a container-laden truck fell off the Ojuelegba bridge.

Doyin Okupe to senate: Confirm el-Rufai as minister, he has capacity to perform

Doyin Okupe, an ex-aide to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has called on the leadership of the senate to confirm Nasir el-Rufai as minister.   Recall that the senate withheld el-Rufai’s confirmation as minister over security clearance.   The red chamber had approved the appointment of 45 out of the 48 ministerial nominees submitted by President Bola Tinubu.   The nominees were confirmed on Monday evening after the upper legislative chamber concluded the screening of the candidates.   El-Rufai and two other nominees — Stella Okotete (Delta) and Danladi Abubakar (Taraba) were not confirmed as the senate awaits security clearance about them.   Reacting in a post on his official Twitter handle on Wednesday, Okupe, a chieftain of the opposition Labour Party (LP), suggested that the senate may insist on an undertaken from the former governor of Kaduna that he will “refrain from making any comments or remarks on religion” while in office.   “The Nigerian senate should reconsider their decision to drop former Governor el-Rufai from the ministerial list,” Okupe wrote.    “I am not a fan of Mallam el-Rufai who I consider to be a radical of some sort and who has in the recent past demonstrated some traits of religious extremism.   “Still, very few people will doubt el-Rufai’s competence and immense capacity to perform. If it is true that he is being considered for the power ministry, I don’t think we should cut our noses to spite or faces.   “The senate may insist on an undertaking from him before his confirmation that while in office as minister, he will refrain from making any comments or remarks on religion.   “The power ministry is extremely important in our economy and in our serious efforts to combat poverty.   “If any Nigerian can fix our energy problems, former Governor El Rufai is certainly one of such people.”

The Niger Republic’s new military government has reopened the country’s land borders and airspace — one week after the ouster of President Mohamed Bazoum.   In an announcement on Tuesday night, the military junta said the borders were opened to Mali, Burkina Faso, Algeria, Libya, and Chad.   The junta also appointed new governors for the country’s eight regions.   While Mali and Burkina Faso are members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), both nations, also under military rule, had taken sides with the coup leaders in Niger.   The military leaders in Niger warned ECOWAS against any further interventions that would “jeopardise the spirit of Pan-Africanism”.   They added that any military intervention against the country would force them to also adopt “self-defence measures” in support of the “brotherly” armed forces and the people of Niger.   Mali and Burkina Faso, who had long been suspended from ECOWAS after earlier military coups, also threatened to withdraw from the regional bloc.   Tensions between Niger and other ECOWAS members remain as the country’s borders with Benin and Nigeria remain closed.   President Bola Tinubu, the ECOWAS chairperson, strongly condemned the coup in Niger, vowing to do everything possible to ensure peace and return of democracy to the unstable West African country and the region at large.   Recall that President Patrice Talon of Benin was deployed by the regional bloc to Niger to assess the situation.   On Sunday ECOWAS issued an ultimatum to the coup leaders, demanding that the democratically elected President Bazoum be released and reinstated.   The regional body also warned of strict measures, including the use of force, if its demands are not met within a week.   The organisation began a three-day meeting in Nigeria on Wednesday to discuss the way forward.   Meanwhile, foreign countries including France and Italy have begun evacuating their citizens and other nationals from Niger.   Other countries, including the United States and Germany, and global organisations such as the European Union (EU) have also suspended financial support to the country in condemnation of the coup.   However, the junta has ignored numerous calls and sanctions aimed at swaying the military leaders to reinstate Bazoum.
