Ministerial nominees: Shehu Sani urges senators not to confirm El-Rufai

Former Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Shehu Sani, has urged Senators of the 10th Assembly not to confirm the former governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai as Minister.   In a statement he issued on Sunday and made to journalists, the ex-lawmaker expressed surprise that El-Rufai’s name reflected on the list as a ministerial nominee despite his obvious religious colouration that is dangerous to the unity of the nation.   He enjoined the three senators from Kaduna State to rise in honour and resist the confirmation and approval of the former governor for the sake of posterity of the nation.   Senator Sani reminded Senators to respect the Senator Abubakar Sodangi Committee which banned El-Rufai from holding public office.   The statement read: “The Senate should uphold and respect the 2008 Senator Sodangi Committee that barred him from holding public office.   “Particularly, the three senators from Kaduna State; they must categorically and unambiguously reject Elrufai’s nomination.   “Silence is a great disservice and betrayal to the people of Kaduna State, who have suffered under his eight years of tyranny and persecution.   “Nigerian Senators should save the country from the danger and jeopardy of harbouring, incubating and crowning such a man into the palace of power.   “A man with a track record of religious intolerance, extremism and disrespect for rule of law doesn’t deserve the gavel of approval from the legislature. He doesn’t deserve to be a minister.   “Any opposition Senator that confirms El-Rufai has betrayed the moral conscience of the people of this country; any ruling party Senator that confirms El-Rufai has brought in a destructive agent into the government of Tinubu.   “Confirming Elrufai as a Minister is a suicidal mission for the Tinubu administration.”   The Senate is set to begin screening and confirmation of 28 ministerial-nominees sent by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday.

Ibom Air passenger apprehended for alleged in-flight theft

A suspect identified as Ogeneochuko David was apprehended on Ibom Air’s flight Q1300 for allegedly stealing another passenger’s laptop from his bag in the overhead cabin during the flight from Lagos to Abuja on July 26, 2023. Ibom Air’s General Manager, Marketing and Communications, Aniekan Essienette, disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital, on Thursday. The statement explained that the owner of the laptop, suspecting the movement of David in the aircraft, decided to check where his laptop was kept and quickly raised an alarm when he realised that it was no longer there. According to the statement: “A search was immediately instituted, which led to about a half-hour delay, and the laptop was found with Mr David. He was immediately offloaded and handed over to the Federal Airport Authority (FAAN) Aviation Security (AVSEC) for further investigation, who then handed him over to the police for further investigation. The police have since confirmed that the suspect is a member of a large syndicate specialising in stealing onboard aircraft.” Essienette also recalled how one Kingsley Chinsunum was alleged to have stolen the sum of N100,000 from a wallet kept inside a bag in the overhead cabin and how one Mr Adebayi Adelugba, staged the stealing of his own checked-in bag and declared it missing with the intent of suing the airline for negligence but was caught through CCTV footage. “In line with our corporate policy, Ibom Air has zero tolerance for this sort of criminal activity on board our flights and will prosecute any offenders to the full extent of the law,” she warned.

Enugu govt urges residents to ignore IPOB’s sit-at-home order

The Enugu State Government has once again urged residents to ignore the sit-at-home order by the factional members of the Indigenous People of Biafra. The state government urged residents to go about their regular activities on Monday. The government has directed that people should resume their normal activities on Monday and warned civil servants, schools, markets, and others not to observe the illegal order by IPOB. The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, issued this directive in a statement he signed on Saturday in Enugu. He said, “The Enugu State Government wishes to remind the good people and residents of the state that the ban on the illegal Monday sit-at-home order remains effective. “In view of this, civil servants, schools, markets, financial institutions, business premises, and others, are hereby directed to resume normal activities on Monday.” Onyia also mentioned that the state government had reaffirmed its commitment to penalising individuals or groups that do not comply with the government’s cancellation of the illegal order. “Markets that fail to open to customers on Monday shall be shut down indefinitely and shops in the markets that close on Monday shall be sealed and re-allocated to those eager to do business in the state. “Government extends the same warning of sanctions against schools, financial institutions, shopping malls, department stores, business premises, and others that may defy its directive,” he said Onyia stressed that the sit-at-home order was illegal and not in line with the Igbo cultural values of hard work, productivity, and creativity. He urged the public to carry out their normal activities on Monday as adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of lives and property

Twitter lost half of its advertising revenue, says Elon Musk

Twitter has lost roughly half of its advertising revenue, according to owner Elon Musk, since he bought the social media platform for $44 billion last October. Musk, who has been outspoken about the difficulties facing the company, broke the figures in a tweet response to a user who was giving suggestions on financing for the platform. “We’re still negative cash flow, due to ~50% drop in advertising revenue plus heavy debt load,” the billionaire tweeted Saturday. “Need to reach positive cash flow before we have the luxury of anything else,” he added, without further elaboration. Insider Intelligence has reported that Twitter was set to earn less than $3 billion in revenue in 2023, down one-third from 2022. Changes instituted by Musk since his takeover of Twitter have turned off users and advertisers alike. Earlier this month, Musk announced that Twitter was limiting verified accounts to reading 10,000 tweets a day, in a bid “to address extreme levels of data scraping” and “system manipulation” by third-party platforms. Non-verified users — the free accounts that make up the majority of users — are limited to reading 1,000 tweets per day, while new unverified accounts are limited to 500 tweets. Twitter has also said TweetDeck, a popular program that allows users to monitor several accounts at once, will only be available to verified users from next month. The changes came as Threads, an app launched by Facebook parent Meta as a rival to Twitter, registered more than 100 million users in its first five days. Earlier this year, the artificial intelligence app ChatGPT, created by OpenAI, took two months to reach the same number of active users. According to some estimates, Threads has now reached 150 million users, with India leading the way, boosted by its link to Instagram which gives it a built-in audience of more than two billion users and spares the platform the challenge of starting from scratch. Twitter is thought to have around 200 million regular users but it has suffered repeated technical failures since Musk bought the platform and sacked thousands of staff. Many have expressed privacy concerns over Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s new platform, which asks users to give Meta permission to track them closely across the internet. Those demands have delayed the launch of Threads in Europe, where new legislation limits the ability of Meta to track and share data across its family of platforms. Its business model revolves around sucking up personal data to use for targeted ads and Threads accounts are linked to Instagram accounts. But few expect Threads to maintain its embargo in Europe indefinitely. European law expert Alexandre de Streel said big tech firms would probably be hammering out compliance issues with the EU over the coming months. “I think it’s more a question of time to understand the scope of the legislation and have a dialogue with the commission,” he said. Musk has also threatened to sue Meta for stealing trade secrets and intellectual property, claims denied by the company. In a letter to Zuckerberg, published by the online news outlet Semafor this week, Musk’s lawyer also accused the company of recruiting dozens of former Twitter employees who “had and continue to have access to Twitter’s trade secrets and other highly confidential information.” The two men have been bickering for years, but things have become heated since it became clear Meta intended to compete with Twitter.

Tennis: Unseeded Vondrousova upsets Ons Jabeur to win Wimbledon

Czech, Marketa Vondrousova became the first unseeded woman to win Wimbledon in the Open era as she swept to a shock 6-4, 6-4 victory over Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur in Saturday’s final. As the first unseeded woman in the Wimbledon final in 60 years, Vondrousova was a heavy underdog against sixth-ranked Jabeur. But the 24-year-old upset the odds on Centre Court to win her maiden Grand Slam title at the second attempt after losing to Ash Barty in the 2019 French Open final. She joins Jana Novotna and Petra Kvitova as the only Czech women to win a Wimbledon title. She is just the ninth unseeded champion at a Grand Slam tournament.

Tinubu’s reforms have placed Nigeria on path for economic growth – Olawepo-Hashim

Mr Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, a former All Progressives Congress presidential aspirant, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s current financial and economic reforms have set Nigeria on the path of huge economic growth.   Tinubu had announced two major economic reforms – ending the petrol subsidies and unifying the naira’s multiple exchange rates.   Addressing journalists in Abuja on Monday, Olawepo-Hashim noted that the current policy reforms had eliminated distortions in the foreign exchange management on the one hand; and removed the corrupt system of oil subsidies on the other hand.   Nigeria had four foreign exchange (FX) markets: the Interbank FX market, the Investors and Exporters (I&E) window, Bureau De Change (BDC) window, and the Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) window.   Olawepo-Hashim added that the policy to unify the exchange windows would have a long-term positive effect on the foreign exchange rate and free flow of capital in the country while also yielding a positive impact due to increased confidence in the new government.   While stressing the importance of a naira exchange rate based on market indicators and informed projections to settle around N660 to $1 in the exchange market within the next 6 to 9 months, he urged the government to pay attention to immediate deployment of relevant social intervention programmes to cushion the effect of inflation on the poor.   He also emphasized that “our economic growth expectations must be inclusive and must not leave the majority of our people behind. It is a great season of hope and confidence for Nigeria. The nation is steadily on to an assured future as an economic power house and great nation.”   He argued that “Nigeria with the right policy mix will exceed the projection of Price Water Cooper that Nigeria will be the 9th largest economy in the world by 2050.”   “We are capable of hitting the great economic milestone predicted by PWC much earlier and climbing higher on the ladder,” he added.   Olawepo-Hashim stressed that the new law on decentralization of electricity generation, transmission and distribution, if properly implemented with concomitant policies, can attract about $300 billion over five to seven years into the sector from local and foreign financing sources.

French police arrest 944 people in one night as protest continues over teenager’s death

The police have arrested nearly 1,000 people in France following a protest that erupted ahead of the funeral of a teenager killed by an officer during a traffic stop.   On June 27, Naël, a 17-year-old boy, was shot dead by a police officer during a traffic stop in Nanterre, a French town.   The police officer who killed Naël has reportedly been placed under formal investigation for voluntary homicide, as the government raced to quell the riot that has continued to the fourth day.   Pascal Prache, the state prosecutor, had said a bullet penetrated Naël’s arm and chest, resulting in his death.   According to him, the officer who shot the teenager said he was scared the boy would run someone over with the car and was motivated by “fear of being hit by the vehicle when it started up again, or of seeing his colleague further inside the vehicle injured by the car’s movement”.   Speaking on the development on Saturday, Gerald Darmanin, the interior minister, said 994 arrests were made nationwide overnight on Friday, adding that 79 injuries were recorded among the police.   He confirmed that despite the deployment of 45,000 officers to the streets of France, looting and vandalisation of private properties continue.   Meanwhile, Darmanin added that the violence had “lessened” compared to previous nights, adding that Friday night’s violence had been of “less intensity”.
