I will never call Tinubu ‘my president’ – Tunde Bakare

  The Serving Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has said he will never call the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, his president.   The cleric and politician, during a webinar on Saturday, alleged a series of malpractices during the 2023 elections, saying the Independent National Electoral Commission made a mess of the electioneering process.   He said this while responding during a Question & Answer session after delivering his speech on the Zoom programme titled ‘Building the New Nigeria: The Role of the Diaspora’ organised by the PTB4Nigeria In Diaspora Group.   The meeting, which began 7pm and was monitored by our correspondent, had over 200 participants.   While speaking earlier during the programme, he said the 2023 elections were below acceptable standards.   When asked if he would be happy to work for the new government as a Minister of Diaspora Engagements, he laughed and said he would say what he said to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), last week.   He said he told Buhari that sometimes he called him President of Nigeria and other times, he called him “My President.”   Bakare said, “Last Wednesday, I was at the Glass House where he (Buhari) has been restricted now because the main house is being renovated. I said I have done that for you. I want you to know that, because of the circumstances of your flying into power on the wings of integrity and incorruptibility, but you’re now passing onto someone who does not have that value.   He said that at “any public lecture anywhere, before this mess is cleared off, I will address Asiwaju (Tinubu) as a President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria but I will never call him my president.”   He said he didn’t participate in the elections, and therefore, no one could say he lost.   Bakare, who participated in the All Progressives Congress presidential primary in June 2022, where nomination forms were sold for N100 million, polled no single vote.   Briefly touching this, he said, “I participated in the primary, and there were hundreds (of persons) who participated only by stepping down, so there is no shame in what we have done. We spoke truth to power.   “I wasn’t there when they voted, I wasn’t there when they scored (me) zero, but we won that badge of zero and badge of honour,” he said, adding that this was because some defeats were more triumphant than victories.   Answering the question, he said if he was called to be a minister under the incoming government, there would be conditions to it, “but I am not desperate to be a minister, not at all. I was offered before but I turned it down. My life is not just to take photographs with the president and shake hands.   “But we will do if it will benefit even one citizen.”   Tinubu will on Monday, May 29, be sworn in as the President of the country.   On Thursday, Tinubu was handed the transition report by Buhari, where he also promised not to disappoint Nigerians.   He pledged to address the security and power crises, among other challenges confronting the country.

South-east governors name Second Niger Bridge after Buhari

  Governors from Nigeria’s south-east region have named the Second Niger Bridge after President Muhammadu Buhari.   Buhari Sallau, the president’s personal assistant on media, wrote on his Facebook page that; “following consultations, the governors of the south-east have agreed that the second Niger Bridge shall be named the Muhammadu Buhari Second Niger Bridge.”   Speaking at the virtual inauguration of the bridge, Hope Uzodinma, the governor of Imo, said despite the south-east not voting for him, Buhari fulfilled the promise he made to the geopolitical zone.   “He asked for our votes, we did not give him. He made a promise and now he has fulfilled the promise even though we didn’t vote for him.”   Charles Soludo, governor of Anambra, said: “As you (Buhari) leave office, the south-east will remember you. It would not be inappropriate to call you Mr Infrastructure. This is a promise delivered.”   Reacting to the naming of the bridge, Tolu Ogunlesi, a special assistant to the president on digital and new media, said the south-east governors agreed to name the new bridge after the president.   “Following consultations, the governors of the south-east have agreed that the Second Niger Bridge shall be named the Muhammadu Buhari Second Niger Bridge.”   On December 15, 2022, the federal government opened the Second Niger Bridge for use, in order to ease traffic in the south-east during the festive season.   The bridge opened for one month during the yuletide and was later closed to traffic on January 15, 2023, for the completion of the Loko-Oweto Bridge and link roads between Benue and Nasarawa states.   On May 15, the bridge was fully opened to motorists, while some finishing touches like lane markings were ongoing.   In a statement on Monday, Femi Adesina, the president’s spokesperson, said Buhari is expected to commission seven legacy projects, including the Second Niger Bridge, on Tuesday.   On his part, Bashir Ahmad, special assistant on digital communication to Buhari, on Tuesday, announced that the 1.6 km long bridge has been named after the president.   “The name is now being officiated. Thank God for our brand new Muhammadu Buhari bridge. Thank you, President Muhammadu Buhari,” Ahmad wrote on his Twitter page.   “The second Niger Bridge is to officially be called/known as Muhammadu Buhari Second Nigeri Bridge,” Ahmad added.

EFCC now object of ridicule – Ohanaeze youths demand Bawa’s removal

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, on Sunday, joined those calling for the removal of the chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa. The Igbo group made the demand in a statement made available to newsmen by its National President, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike. He said the call became necessary as the EFCC was according to him drifting off its known credibility. Okwu said the Igbo group was not surprised owing to earlier alarm that Bawa was compromised. He said, “This came to the fore when he unleashed the commission on Senator Ike Ekweremadu, a victim of circumstance, who was then facing charges in the United Kingdom. “The EFCC under Bawa has never charged Ekweremadu for any crime, but while the lawmaker was in far away UK, he rushed and misled a Nigerian court to confiscate all his properties. Thank God that the court later reversed itself. This is just one of the major unholy and sponsored jobs of the EFCC under Bawa. “In the history of the EFCC, no chairman of the commission has ever come under public scrutiny in such a short period of time like Bawa. The same goes for many of the staff under him, justifying the aphorism, ‘like father like son’. “A few days ago, it was even reported that two of the staff members killed another colleague while they were fighting for exhibits. This shows how dirty the commission has become. “Apart from the corruption fight taking a nosedive under Bawa, it is also no longer news that the EFCC under him has totally become a tool for political witchhunt, it is now merely being used to settle political scores. Okwu said, “based on the foregoing, it is time for Bawa to pack his luggages and step aside as the Chairman of the EFCC. We even expected that he should have resigned on his own volition judging by some weighty allegations against him. “However, since he is not ready to toe the path of honour, we advise President Muhammadu Buhari to do the needful by purging his government of all the ridicule brought upon his avowed anti-corruption stance by Bawa and the EFCC under him. “But should Buhari fail to do so, the President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu should consider it as one of his very first assignments- to make Bawa step aside and face investigation. This is the only way Nigerians would rekindle their hope on the anti-graft commission.”

CBN to establish Virtual Currency Museum

 The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is collaborating with Google to establish a Virtual Currency Museum Gallery. Deputy Governor, Operations, Mr. Folashodun Shonubi, disclosed this at the International Museums Day (IMD) celebration, in Abuja, yesterday According to him, the virtual museum would enable members of the public to access the currency museum from the comfort of their homes, without having to travel to the physical museum located at the bank’s headquarters in Abuja. His words, “Thanks to technology, the Central Bank of Nigeria Currency Museum is working in collaboration with Google and our in-house Information Technology Department (|TD) establish a Virtual Reality Museum. “This is an approach to connect with the global world for the public to sit back and relax within their comfort zone and view the artifacts on display.” The director added that the theme of this year’s celebration, ‘“Museums, Sustainability and Well-being’ was designed to link museums in making sure that our environments are sustained globally to make the world a better place, and thus its choice by the International Council of Museums (1COM) as the theme for the 2023” Also speaking, the Director, Currency Operations of the CBN, Mr. Ahmed Umar said that museums’ vast collections offer almost infinite opportunities to share with visitors, “the ways in which the past informs the present and how the issues of the present can make the past relevant again.” Mr. Umar added, “Works of art can speak so eloquently about what makes us human, what connects and divides us, what inspires and provokes us and how vital the impulse to make and create has always been across time and geographic boundaries. I believe this kind of perspective is one of the deep-seated needs of our society. “Museums play an important role in the society. Technology has helped Museums in reaching beyond core audience to new publics. This has been shown in digitalization of collections, virtual tours or something as simple as a hashtag that allows visitors to share their experiences on social media.” He noted that the COVID-19 pandemic affected museums very negatively, as people could not visit them during that period. The director, however, pointed out that the crisis also served as a catalyst for crucial innovations that have led to increased focus on digitization and the creation of new forms of cultural experience and dissemination.   Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), says young people will not be keen to relocate abroad if they can thrive in the country.   The former finance minister spoke on Monday at the 2023 induction for re-elected and elected governors.   The event, organised by the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), had the theme ‘Governing for Impact: Building Sub-national Governance’.   Okonjo-Iweala appealed to the governors to focus on nation-building and invest in the infrastructure and education system of their respective states.   She said Nigeria will struggle to “develop and prosper” if the youths keep leaving the country.   Okonjo-Iweala said with remote work and AI tools, it is increasingly easy for businesses across the states to provide intermediate services like accounting or insurance claims processing to offices around the world.   “With our large numbers of educated people fluent in English – together with a deep network of connections to the diaspora – we are well positioned to seize these opportunities,” she said.    “But such businesses, like our tech startups, will struggle to thrive if we keep losing so many of our most skilled young people to emigration. Let me share some numbers.   “Over 15,000 Nigerians emigrated to Canada in 2021, joining 19,000 who had moved there in the previous two years. Estimates for 2022 are 20,000. That is over 50,000 skilled Nigerians in the space of four years.   “In the first half of 2022 alone, the UK granted skilled worker visas to nearly 16,000 Nigerians. Thousands of Nigerian-trained medical doctors work in the USA. The most popular phrase in Nigeria now is “I am going to japa”. I am not telling people not to go, but what I am saying is how many of these japas can we afford? If you japa we want you to “kapa”.   “Excellencies you must make your states and all Nigeria a hospitable, encouraging place where young people want to stay and thrive, not leave. Much as we appreciate remittances sent home by these migrants, Nigeria will not develop and prosper if its youthful, tech-savvy population leaves. Without them, our demographic dividend disappears.”
