Russia’s Gazprom halts gas deliveries to Europe

Russian energy giant Gazprom suspended gas deliveries to Germany on a major pipeline on Wednesday, the latest in a series of supply halts that have fuelled an energy crisis in Europe. Gazprom said supplies via Nord Stream 1 were “completely stopped” for “preventative work” at a compressor unit, shortly after European gas network operator ENTSOG announced that deliveries had ceased. Gazprom has also said it would suspend gas supplies to France’s main provider Engie from Thursday after it failed to pay for all deliveries made in July. The latest stop comes as European countries have faced soaring energy prices since Russia invaded Ukraine in late February and subsequently curbed its gas deliveries to the region. Germany, which is heavily dependent on Russian gas, has accused Moscow of using energy as a “weapon”. But Gazprom has said the three-day maintenance work was “necessary” and had to be be carried out after “every 1,000 hours of operation”. Germany’s Federal Network Agency chief Klaus Mueller has called it a “technically incomprehensible” decision, warning that it was likely just a pretext by Moscow to wield energy supplies as a threat. Experience shows that Moscow “makes a political decision after every so-called maintenance”, he said, adding that “we’ll only know at the beginning of September if Russia does that again”. AFP

Organ Harvesting: Don’t release biodata to Ekweremadu, London Court – Alleged victim

David Ukpo, the victim of the alleged organ harvesting scandal involving Senator Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, on Tuesday asked a Federal High Court in Abuja to set aside its July 1 order for the release of his bio-data for use in a London court in Ekweremadu’s trial. Ukpo, while faulting proceedings of the court that led to the issuance of the order, claimed that his fundamental rights to a fair hearing and personal privacy had been grossly breached. His grouse was that neither he nor the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, as Chief Law Officer of the Federation, was made a party in the suit. In a motion on notice he just filed through his lawyer, Mr Bamidele Igbinedion, Ukpo prayed Justice Inyang Eden Ekwo to reverse the order permitting the release of his bio-data to Ekweremadu and his wife for their defense before Uxbridge Magistrate Court in London. Defendants in the motion bothering on the alleged breach of fundamental rights are National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, Comptroller General, Nigeria Immigration Service, Stanbic IBTC Bank, United Bank for Africa, UBA, and Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System. The applicant is praying the court to restrain the defendants, their agents, privies, staff, and workers from releasing any information concerning him to Ekweremadu and his wife for their defense in the London court.

Delta: Police arrest suspected drug peddler, recover nine bags of Indian hemp

Police Operatives of the Eagle-Net Special Squad during stop-and-search duty along Benin-Sapele road, arrested a 40-year-old suspected drug peddler, Damilola Adefuwa, with nine bags of weeds believed to be Indian hemp covered with plantain leaves. The Delta State Police Command led by CP Ari Muhammed Ali confirmed the report in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe. He said, “On 25/8/2022 at about 1730hours, operatives of Eagle-Net Special Squad while on Aberdeen patrol duty, intercepted a sienna vehicle with reg. no. SAP 889 AA driven by one Demilola Adefuwa aged 42 years, along Benin-Sapele road.” According to him, “As usual, they subjected the vehicle to a search during which nine bags of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp covered with plantain leaves for the purpose of deceiving the Police were recovered.” DSP Edafe said, “The team arrested the suspect, exhibit recovered and investigation is ongoing.”

IPC demands justice for brutalized female journalist, Nefasah Vandi

The International Press Centre (IPC) has demanded adequate protection for ABC’s journalist, Nefasah Vandi who was recently brutalised by her estranged husband. This was made known in a statement by Lanre Arogundade, IPC Executive Director and signed by IPC’s Press Freedom Officer, Melody Akinjiyan and obtained by newsmen on Friday. In the statement, IPC stated that reports reaching its Safety Alert Desk revealed that, Vandi a mother of three, was allegedly beaten to the point of stupor by her estranged husband, Ibrahim Aliyu, who inflicted various degree of injuries, including dislocation of one of her hands. Arogundade, while condemning the attack on the female journalist, added that the spikes in the case of domestic violence against women by their spouses was alarming. NANS can’t resolve ASUU strike – Ashefon

  The President, National Association of Nigerian Students, Sunday Ashefon, on Thursday, described strike actions in the tertiary education sector in Nigeria as a challenge that administrations of the student body will not be able to resolve.   Ashefon disclosed this during the 40th anniversary of NANS which was held at the National Universities Commission in Abuja.   He said, “Perhaps the tertiary education sector in Nigeria is faced with one of the strongest tests in our history in the last few years. We have witnessed the total collapse of the sector as a result of the incessant strike.   “This challenge alone is bigger than what any NANS administration could resolve. However, our nation’s education system is on the brink and the entire nation must rise to the rescue. Where we go from here as a nation is dependent on how we collectively gather the crackers of the collapsing education system and rebuild it together as a nation.    “Nigeria does not belong here, our tertiary education system does not belong here and this is already taking its tore on the nation’s economy, security, and faith of the young people in the nation and its education system. We all must rise to the rescue.   “As we celebrate today, let us remember that we are only gathered here because education is part of our story and life, we must therefore do all it takes to ensure this part of our national life does not become a story of the past”.   NANS is the umbrella body of all Nigerian students of tertiary institutions in Nigeria and the diaspora.   The body has come under fire by stakeholders who have accused it of not pressuring the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities to find lasting solutions to incessant strikes in Nigerian universities.

Police: NANS cautions PSC against politicizing recruitment

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has backed the Nigeria Police over the controversy trailing the recruitment of constables into the Force. The students’ body said the politicization of such an important process would do no one any good in such a critical time in the country. It could be re-called that the Police Service Commission, PSC, had bypassed the Police Authority and advertised for the recruitment, leading to a counter publication by the police hierarchy. While wading into the situation, NANS said it considered the controversy unnecessary and a distraction to the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, who is currently working hard to sanitize the Force. In a statement signed by the Senate President of NANS, Comrade Chuks Okafor, he said the last recruitment exercise conducted directly by the Nigeria Police was a clear testimony that a new Police Force has berthed in the country. According to him, “we find it strange that the Police Service Commission will just wake up and begin recruitment for the Force. Can this happen in the military or other paramilitary organizations? Must everything be politicized? “The only reason we find behind the action of the PSC is to pave the way for a situation where the recruitment will end up in the hands of politicians, thereby denying common masses who are qualified the opportunity to enlist into the Force. “The last recruitment exercise, handled under the office of the DIG in charge of Training and Development, Force Headquarters, Abuja, Mr. Danmallam Mohammed, was seamless, and we don’t expect anything less this time around. “It also brought to an end issues of racketeering, which hitherto characterized such exercise in the past. “All those who participated in the recruitment exercise testified to the transparent process, quality of training environment and facilities.” “Having said that, we advise that the Nigeria Police should not be cajoled into allowing a process that will not be in the best interest of the populace. “The PSC should allow the IGP’s team to handle the recruitment exercise, for whoever wears the shoes knows where it pinches. “We are pleased with the current drive of the IGP and his team to restore the image of the Force, especially in the area of human rights. This is why only the best should be recruited afresh into the Police Force. “Nigeria is battling a lot of security issues and only professionally-recruited policemen can take up the challenge,” he added.

Labour reacts to NBC’s sanction on 52 media organisations

President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Ayuba Wabba has criticised the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, for slamming sanctions on a number of selected media organisations, saying it’s a slippery road to press emasculation. Wabba said it was with disbelief that the NLC received the news of the withdrawal of the licenses of 52 media houses including electronic, television, and radio media houses. He described the reasons given by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) that the affected media houses failed to pay for their license renewal as draconian. “While we understand that the NBC has a regulatory duty to ensure rules keeping, we believe that the action taken by the NBC is a little too drastic, dramatic, draconian, and debilitating not only for the affected media houses but also for their staff and indeed millions of Nigerians who follow programs from the affected media houses. “The first natural instinct to the withdrawal of the operating license by the NBC is the idea that the affected media houses did not deliberately avoid paying for their operating licenses. Such would be akin to cutting so close to the bone. “The most palpable reason for the failure of many of the media houses to pay for the renewal of their operating licenses could be easily found in the deteriorating economic conditions in Nigeria. “This is understandable given the severe stress and strain that businesses in Nigeria have been subjected to owing to fallout of the COVID 19 lockdown in 2020, the ongoing disruption in global and domestic energy supply, the foreign exchange volatilities, and the associated hyper-inflation,” Wabba stated. He noted that many media houses just like most businesses in Nigeria suffer the double jeopardy of escalating business costs and plummeting revenues. According to him, largely to blame for this sad state of affairs is the government whose mismanagement of the economy has ensured that a litre of diesel is now knocking at the borderline of N1000. To compound the situation is the epileptic supply of electricity with the national grid collapsing intermittently for the umpteenth time in recent months. He said, in addition to the soaring and scary rising energy costs which hit electronic media houses hardest given that they must always be on air whether it makes economic sense or not, there are salaries to pay. maintenance services, and sundry basic operating costs to keep the media houses running and serving their listening and viewing public. He stated further, “Amidst these operational suffocations, how does the NBC expect the media houses to generate the money to renew their operating licenses? Indeed, Nigeria’s media houses should be eulogized for resilience, and tenacity in the face of prevailing economic blizzards. “The action of the NBC also smacks of insensitivity to the welfare of the staff of the media houses which operations are being shut down. It is unthinkable that in the middle of very traumatic economic realities, the government would be thinking of flinging many Nigerians into the unemployment market. Wike meets Tinubu in France, horse-trading to work against Atiku— Sources

  Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers, is reportedly meeting with Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Paris, France.  TheCable reports that Samuel Ortom, governor of Benue; Seyi Makinde of Oyo, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, and other PDP stalwarts loyal to Wike are also attending the meeting. Wike and his team were said to have travelled out of Nigeria early Monday morning.  “This explains why both Governor Nyesom Wike, who is a leading member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), and the APC presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu were both absent at the opening of the ongoing NBA conference in Lagos,” the sources said.  According to sources, Wike and his supporters are horse-trading in the meeting to make a decision whether to back the APC candidate in the 2023 presidential election. They are also reportedly scheduled to meet with Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party.  “This meeting is a confirmation that the Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike, even before the 2022 presidential primaries of the PDP, has been working underground for the APC candidate, Bola Tinubu,” the sources said.   “This move is a clear indication that the Governor Wike-led group has been deceiving the leadership of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in fruitless reconciliation meetings, but has already decided to play the ‘spoiler game’ by destroying the party from within, frustrate the chances of the PDP presidential candidate in the 2023 presidential election, Atiku Abubakar or when the push comes to shove, move en mass to the APC or Labour Party when the PDP least expected.  “It is important to note here that, part of Governor Wike’s plan ahead of the 2023 general elections, is to use the former governor of Ondo state, Olusegun Mimiko and other surrogates in Katsina, Kebbi, Cross River, Kano and other states to destabilise the campaigns of the PDP, especially the chances of its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.” THE CRISIS   The opposition party has been embroiled in crisis since the conclusion of its presidential primary election in May. Wike had contested the presidential ticket, but he lost to the former vice-president. The cracks widened after Atiku Abubakar named Ifeanyi Okowa, governor of Delta, as his running mate for the 2023 presidential election. Following the announcement, some party stakeholders expressed concerns that Atiku overlooked Wike — who was said to have been recommended by a panel set up at Atiku’s instance. The division in the party worsened after Atiku granted an interview to Arise TV, during which he gave his rationale for overlooking Wike. Days after the interview, Wike fired back, accusing the party’s presidential candidate of telling “many lies”. Atiku has been making efforts to reconcile with Wike but there has been little progress thus far. Last week, a three-member delegation he constituted met with Wike’s team in Rivers. The Rivers governor is reportedly demanding the resignation of Iyorchia Ayu, PDP national chairman, as a precondition for peace talks.

NPFL: Abia Warriors part ways with head coach, Amapakabo

Nigeria Professional Football League outfit, Abia Warriors has parted ways with their head coach, Imama Amapakabo following the expiration of his contract. The 53-year-old took charge of the Umuahia side in 2020 and the club barely survived the drop in the two seasons under his tutelage. Abia Warriors were knocked out of Aiteo Cup in the Round of 16 by Nationwide League club, Ottasolo FC on Sunday. The club have now decided not to renew Amapakabo’s contract after another underwhelming campaign.
