We’re working seriously to prevent terrorist attack – Lagos Police

  The Lagos police command says it is “working seriously” to prevent any form of terrorist attack in the state. Benjamin Hundeyin, Lagos police spokesperson, spoke during a Twitter Space on Saturday, which was monitored by PUNCH. Over the past few days, the spate of violent attacks has increased in many parts of the country. Abuja, the country’s capital, has also witnessed a series of violent onslaughts on security operatives, including a recent attack on troops of the presidential guard. Speaking on the readiness of the Lagos police to combat terrorism, Hundeyin said all security apparatus in the state have been “optimally deployed” to prevent any attack. He said the Department of State Services (DSS) has also been sharing intelligence reports with the command. “We are working seriously with other security agencies. Many times when I am with the commissioner of police, Abiodun Alabi, the Department of State Services keeps sending intelligence reports to us,” he said.  “All resources are available, from human resources to gadgets. Our equipment has been optimally deployed to ensure that we don’t have any attack in Lagos. “The people also have a role to play by reporting suspicious movements to security agencies. It’s a collective thing. On our part, we are not just ignoring it, we are at alert. “Most of us have families, and relatives in Lagos, my parents are in Lagos and I know that if I don’t do my job, it’s not just the people out there that will be affected, we (the police) will be affected by this. We’re all Nigerians and we’re together in this.”

  Two Nigerian movie stars, Cynthia Okereke and Clemson Cornel, aka Agbogidi, have been reportedly kidnapped.   The development was disclosed on Friday in a statement issued by the Director of Communications, Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Monalisa Chinda.   According to the statement, families of the actors had raised the alarm over the whereabouts of the duo after a film production at Ozalla Town, Enugu State.   The statement added that the incident has increased fear amongst members of the AGN regarding the safety of actors filming across the country.   The statement reads, “The two members were suspected of having been kidnapped, which has increased fear amongst members about the safety of actors filming in the country.   “Because of this sad development, the National President of the Guild, Ejezie Emeka Rollas, has instructed all Actors to avoid going to the outskirt of cities to film except full security cover is provided to ensure their safety”.   The AGN president who also expressed shock at the development, called on security agencies to speed up investigation in a bid to rescue the actors unhurt.

  The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers in the house of representatives have given President Muhammadu Buhari six weeks to improve the nation’s security or risk impeachment.   Ndudi Elumelu, minority leader of the house of representatives, said this on Thursday while briefing journalists after a closed-door meeting of PDP members in the national assembly.   The meeting was chaired by Philip Aduda, senate minority leader.   The development comes about 24 hours after the PDP legislators in the senate handed Buhari a six-week ultimatum to improve security in the country.   According to Elumelu, Nigeria is at a “standstill” and lawmakers can’t “stand and see the country collapse”.   “Both chambers have tried several times either by resolution or by security submit to draw the attention of Mr President as to why there is a need for us to address the insecurity of this nation, but that has not been taken seriously,” he said.   “Of course, so many outcries by our people. Our farmers can no longer go to their various farms and I believe that we are the worst hit in terms of food production.    “Looking at the reason our colleagues walked out in the senate, we are of the opinion that we will also join them in the same way.   “They have given six to eight weeks for Mr President to address the insecurity that is affecting this nation and I want to also join, on behalf of my colleagues to say that upon the expiration, we will proffer ways of ensuring that we gather all the signatures.”   Elumelu said the impeachment proceedings will be supported by other lawmakers who are not in the opposition because “all are affected”.   “They may not be speaking but we may be speaking for them,” he added.

ASUU: Two-day solidarity protest just our first step – NLC warns FG

  Nigeria Labour Congress has warned the federal government that the two-day nationwide solidarity protest by the union is just a first step, stressing that action would be reviewed next week for further strategy.   The Labour Union in Osun State on Tuesday joined the national body in a solidarity protest to end the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike.   ASUU has been on strike for almost six months.   The Vice Chairman of Osun State NLC, Awotayo Gbadebo said the national body will review the two-day protest if the federal government does not yield to its voice.   The NLC asked the federal government to open Nigerian Universities now.   Various labour unions, including Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Trade Union Congress (TUC), NULGE, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), JUSUN, SSANU, NASU and Students’ union bodies joined the protest to express their grievance.   They gathered at Ogo-Oluwa and moved to the Osun State Assembly where the Speaker addressed the protesters before they walked to the governor’s office.   While addressing journalists on Tuesday, Gbadebo who represented the state chairman of NLC, Comrade Jacob Adekomi said the government is toying with the lives of students with the incessant strike.   He proposed an act of law that will stop public office or politicians from sending their children abroad for education to tackle incessant strikes and other problems facing education in Nigeria.   “Our children’s future have been toyed with because of the incessant strike. Obafemi Awolowo and other leaders gave these people free education. We want the government to open our schools today. This two-day protest is the first action and will be reviewed by National Working Committee next week.”

Abductors of Kaduna-Abuja train victims have released three from the remaining 43 victims in their custody. Bandits had on Sunday, flogged the 43 victims, threatened to Kidnap President Muhammad Buhari and Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai. NYSC: IGP Usman Baba told to arrest Senator Stella Oduah immediately

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of former Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah. The rights group also sought the disqualification of Oduah as Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s candidate for the Anambra North Senatorial Election in 2023 for alleged perjury over her claims around her participation in the one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme. This is following NYSC’s claim that Oduah “after the (three weeks) orientation course, absconded and never completed the national service.” According to NYSC, “The consequence of this is that she is not qualified for the issuance of the certificate of national service.” However, Oduah had debunked the claim, stressing that she completed her national youth service. Citing a letter dated 11th January, 2017, Oduah stated that she served under NECA in 1982. Oduah had also on October 23, 2014, deposed to an affidavit that she lost the original copy of her NYSC certificate, a claim that is contrary to the NYSC statement that she absconded in 1982. To this end, HURIWA, in a statement signed by Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, its National Coordinator, said “[We] demand the arrest of Stella Oduah by the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, for alleged perjury following the documentary evidence of NYSC. “Failure by the IGP to do this, HURIWA, will by next week, institute a suit to compel the IGP through a MANDAMUS to investigate, arrest Stella Oduah and charge her for alleged perjury based on the documentary evidence already publicised by the NYSC. This is a critical issue that the IGP ought to investigate if the IGP is patriotic.” Meanwhile, the human rights advocacy group also tackled the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) for opposing the NYSC Trust Fund (Establishment) Bill recently passed by the National Assembly that imposed a levy of one per cent of the net profit of companies and organised private sector operating a business in Nigeria, amongst others “We condemned NECA for opposing setting up of NYSC TRUST FUND that is meant to create skills for youths and demand to know if the association is being sponsored by Senator Stella Oduah whom NECA has been defending since her certificate saga despite overwhelming evidence from NYSC that the former minister never completed her NYSC but absconded. “NECA should stop doing the bidding of Oduah who boasted to deal with NYSC for exposing her alleged perjury. An organisation like NECA should not be politicised by moneybags for the economic porridge of a few allegedly greedy and corrupt individuals. “The President, Muhammadu Buhari should ignore NECA’s opposition and assent to the NYSC Trust Fund Bill already passed by the National Assembly. This fund when established will cement President Muhammadu Buhari’s name in the sands of times.” HURIWA said there is an abundance of evidence already presented to the National Assembly by reputable Nigerians and organisations including the NYSC’S Management, CSOs, youth associations amongst a plethora of other stakeholders that the Trust Fund is being set up to address the infrastructural deficit besetting the scheme in the areas of camp renovation, maintenance; upgrading, building, and maintenance of corps members lodges. The decision to establish the NYSC Trust Fund was conceived during a meeting held with some of the scheme’s stakeholders. The idea of the trust fund was strongly supported by civil societies, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), and the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON). HURIWA maintained also that: “Statutorily, the NYSC scheme as it were, has a tripartite funding arrangement – the Federal, State and Local Governments, with each having varying degree of responsibilities. “Over the years, the scheme has equally partnered governmental and non-governmental institutions in the area of providing start-up capitals. “This is for corps members to fund their business initiatives under the NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme which is a direct answer to the often asked rhetorical question: After the NYSC what next?’’ he said. HURIWA further affirmed that THE NYSC YOUTHS TRUST FUND when established as a legacy project by President Muhammadu Buhari will inevitably create resources for a greater percentage of corps members trained under the NYSC skills acquisition programme to start-up their businesses. The bill which has been passed by both chambers of the National Assembly mandates businesses operating in Nigeria to remit one per cent of their net profit to fund the trust fund.

  Samuel Ortom, governor of Benue, says the state is opposed to the national water resources bill reintroduced in the national assembly.   The bill passed first reading at the house of representatives on Tuesday.   The bill, which is sponsored by Sada Soli, an All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker from Katsina state, seeks to establish an act that would provide a regulatory framework for the nation’s water resources.   The bill dates back to the eighth national assembly when it was first sent to the parliament by the executive. It was passed in 2020 by the green chamber but was later withdrawn following criticism that trailed the decision of the lower parliament.   The bill had sought to bring water resources — both surface and underground — and the banks of the water sources “affecting more than one state”, under the control of the federal government.   When the bill was reintroduced last Tuesday, two Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers kicked against it, protesting why the rejected bill is being re-introduced in the current assembly.   Explaining that the bill could have been modified, Femi Gbajabiamila, speaker of the house, said the bill’s sponsor informed him that governors, including Ortom and the attorney-general of states, made input and agreed that the bill be reintroduced.   Reacting in a statement issued on Sunday by Terver Akase, his chief press secretary, Ortom said Benue is against the bill and will not be part of any discussion in support of it.   While describing the bill as “obnoxious” the governor said it seeks to take over what rightfully belongs to states.   “The bill which seeks to bring all water sources (surface and underground), as well as river banks under the control of the Federal Government through its agencies is anti-federalism and negates the right of Nigerians to their ancestral resources,” the statement reads.   “The bill, in addition to its provisions which are grossly at variance with the Land Use Act, is disguised land-grabbing legislation designed to grant pastoralists unhindered access to river basins, adjacent marine and coastal environments across the country.   “The bill is another version of ruga and cattle colonies whose objective is to create grazing areas in the 36 states of the federation for herders and their livestock.   “We fault the submission of the Speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila on the day the bill was reintroduced, that all Governors contributed in the drafting of the new bill. We find it unconscionable, the Speaker’s mention of Governor Samuel Ortom as one of those who endorsed the bill.   “Coming at a time when Nigerians are clamouring for proper federalism which entails devolution of powers to states and local governments, the introduction of a Water Resources Bill by the Buhari administration to deprive the people of their water resources is not only unfortunate but also smacks of insensitivity.   “Initiators of the obnoxious National Water Resources Bill are not only insensate but have also shown crass abhorrence of Nigeria’s unity as well as the current mood of the nation when people are slaughtered in their homes and even the clergy are not spared by terrorists. Shouldn’t the Presidency be more concerned about proffering a lasting solution to the orgy of killings across the country?   “We want to alert Nigerians again that if the National Water Resources Bill is passed into law, the rights of citizens over fresh water resources – ponds, lakes, rivers, streams and springs will be taken away with impunity. The bill will deny states and local government authorities as well as individuals the right to make use of the water in their backyard, until they get permission from Abuja.    “We state unequivocally that Benue will not be part of the National Water Resources Bill! Our state should therefore be counted out of any discussion that pertains to the bill.”   The governor called on other state governments to kick against the bill, adding that “this is an opportunity for all patriots to stand to be counted as those who resisted modern-day slavery”.

Running mate: Funke Akindele being considered as nominee, says Lagos PDP candidate’s aide

Gbenga Ogunleye, media aide to Olajide Adediran, governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos, says Funke Akindele, a Nigerian actress, is one of those being considered as running mate.   Ogunleye, head of media and communications of the campaign organisation for Adediran, better known as Jandor, said this on Friday.   His statement comes on the heels of a poster making the rounds on social media, wherein Funke is named as the running mate to the PDP governorship candidate for the 2023 elections.   Ogunleye said the actress is one of the five persons under consideration as Jandor’s running mate, but she hasn’t been confirmed.    “Funke Akindele hasn’t been confirmed as Jandor’s running mate. Funke is one of the five nominees to be Jandor’s running mate,” he said.   “She was nominated alongside four other people, whose names are Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, Kolawole Vaughan, Adenike Shobajo and [Rasheed] Teslim-Balogun. Jandor has not named anyone as his running mate yet.”   Adediran, lead visioner of the Lagos4Lagos Movement, clinched the governorship ticket of the PDP in Lagos state in May.   Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has given political parties till July 15 to submit nominations for governorship candidates, while August 12 is the final deadline for withdrawal and replacement of candidates.   The governorship election is scheduled for March 11, 2023.

PDP crisis: Atiku’s running mate needs Wike’s support – Okowa’s camp

  The camp of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate’s running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa, has said the Delta State governor would work with his Rivers State counterpart, Nyesom Wike.   Reports have it that Wike and some PDP chieftains are aggrieved over the choice of Okowa as the party’s presidential running mate.   Following his emergence, the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, constituted a committee to select his running mate.   The committee had picked Wike, who came second during the PDP presidential primary election in Abuja.   But, Atiku had ignored the committee’s recommendation and opted for Okowa as his running mate.   Atiku’s decision is believed to have aggrieved Wike and other party chieftains.   However, the Delta State Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, assured that Okowa needs Wike’s support ahead of the 2023 presidential election.   Aniagwu assured that Okowa would work with other leaders in the south to get votes for the PDP.   The Commissioner said, “Okowa will work with other leaders in the south and across the country to galvanize the voters. He (Okowa) believes that to have an inroad in Rivers State, for example, he will need leaders led by Wike to get the votes.   “Okowa will work with Wike very well. Okowa will also reach out to our brothers and sisters in the South-West and in the South-East, which is already happening. The challenge at hand is not a one-man show.   “Beyond members of our party, Nigerians believe that the PDP should get it right as the major option for the people ahead of the 2023 general election.”

Manchester City’s owners are set to complete a deal to buy Italian club Palermo, according to Goal. The City Football Group (CFG) have held discussions with the Serie B club about becoming the 11th club in their portfolio. Palermo went bankrupt in 2019, before being reformed as a phoenix club in the fourth-tier of Italian football. Despite playing in Serie C, the club attracted 31,000 spectators for their end-of-season play-off matches in May and June. The purchase of 80 percent of the club shares will cost between €12 million and €13 million. Manchester City are the flagship club in the group, which has 11 teams on four continents including MLS side New York City FC. CFG’s other clubs are Girona in Spain, Troyes in France and Lommel in Belgium.
