Why Wike will not support Atiku – Fayose

  Former Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose, has explained why he believes Nyesom Wike will never support the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar. Mr Fayose, in an interview with PremiumTimes, said power must shift to the southern part of Nigeria in 2023 after the expiration of President Muhammadu Buhari’s second term. The former governor also recounted how Mr Atiku “promised” to make Mr Wike, the Rivers State governor, his running mate after he was declared winner of the PDP presidential primary election. According to the former Ekiti governor, Mr Atiku failed to fulfil his promise to Mr Wike when he settled for the Delta State governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, as his running mate. “Wike never said he wanted to be VP, but when Atiku visited him, he was the one who said, ‘I want you to be my VP’. He said that to Wike. If that then changes, is Wike not supposed to be told? Is he not supposed to know?” He recalled that Mr Atiku had ignored the recommendation of a committee set up by the opposition party to pick his running mate. “PDP set up a committee to recommend a running mate for the candidate and the committee voted and picked Wike, but they didn’t comply with the recommendation of the committee.” “If the party is now a one-man show, we will show them that we can resist it. We are with Wike 100 per cent. “When they need Wike’s money and Wike’s support, they will say, ‘Wike is good enough’. Wike has been injured, but we will remain with him. Whatever he does is what we would do; wherever he asks us to go is where we will go.” When asked what would happen should Mr Wike ask them to support Mr Atiku, the former governor said: “Wike will never say we should support Atiku. “Wike cannot come out to say he is supporting Atiku. I dare him to say so; because he knows that whatever he says will haunt him forever. If Wike supports Atiku, we will abandon him.” Atiku responds Contacted for a response, Paul Ibe, Mr Atiku’s spokesperson, said his principal and the party will continue to appeal to aggrieved persons within their fold to embrace dialogue. “Because the bigger challenge is winning the election, kicking out the APC and stopping them from the many years of impoverishing our people,” said Mr Ibe.  “It is normal for our people to be aggrieved but the PDP has a way of resolving issues like this and that will be done and we all shall be happy.” ‘Power to the south’ On whether the plan is now to technically support the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Tinubu, or his counterpart in the Labour Party, Peter Obi, Mr Fayose said: “this is not about Bola Tinubu or Obi, but this is about our belief that power must come to the south and it is a struggle we must actualise. Mr Fayose further explained that “when the June 12 election was cancelled, the presidency was zoned to the southwest to pacify the southwest region. “When former President Goodluck Jonathan was over staying, it was believed that he was already using the northern slot. So, he was opposed and a northern candidate was installed through the APC. “This time, it is the turn of the south because Buhari has spent eight years. Why will PDP be insisting that it must again be the turn of the north.” Mr Fayose also stated that he does not care if his actions are perceived as anti-party activity. “ What I am saying is, it is the turn of the South, and if they want to expel me, to hell with them. I am not taking money from anyone to belong to this party. “If they want to rock this boat, we will help them to rock it.”

2023 presidency: What I discussed with Obasanjo – Ango Abdullahi

  The Chairman, Northern Elders Forum, Prof Ango Abdullahi has said Nigeria’s political situation was the major issue that dominated his discussion with former president Olusegun Obasanjo during the latter’s visit to Zaria, Kaduna State.   Speaking in an interview, the former Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) explained that, “The first thing the former president said was ‘are we heading towards a new leadership that will take us out of the huge challenges bedevilling the country?’ Because there were divergent views on whether the nation is on the right track or not.”   Prof. Abdullahi stated that he and Obasanjo seemed to share the same view regarding the two major presidential flagbearers contesting for the apex seat of the nation, saying that they all felt that both Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar do not have what it takes to fix the challenges bedevilling the nation.   The Chairman of Northern Elders’ Forum explained that that had been his personal stance, and he still maintains it.   He stressed that it was borne out of the fact that he knew both of them too well, and going by their antecedents and track record of services, he doesn’t think they have what it takes to fix the challenges in the country.   Abdullahi observed that Nigerians may decide to go for an option elsewhere since there are 15 other candidates aspiring for the exalted seat.   Speaking on the stance of the Northern Elders’ Forum, the NEF chairman opined that the Northern region was more concerned on quality leadership irrespective of where it comes from.   Abdullahi, however, hoped that such quality leader would emerge from the North.

2023: Buhari’s aide, Onochie reacts to claims on Tinubu’s academic certificates

Lauretta Onochie, President Muhammadu Buhari’s aide on social media, has dismissed claims that Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential candidate has no certificate. Onochie described the news that Tinubu has no primary and secondary school certificate as fake. In a post on Facebook, she recounted how President Muhammadu Buhari was accused of being an illiterate who was cloned. She linked the accusations against Tinubu to those campaigning for other presidential candidates. Reports had it that Tinubu informed the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, that his certificates were stolen by unknown persons during the military era. Tinubu, however, noted that he obtained a degree in business and administration in 1979 at the Chicago State University. With the emergence of such a claim, some Nigerians had insisted that Tinubu never went to school. Reacting, Onochie wrote: “DEM GO HEARAM, I’m not sure why they cannot manufacture a different line of lies. “In 2014, a Retired Army General of repute, Muhammadu Buhari did not go to school. He’s less than a year from finishing his second term as the President of our great nation. “In 2022, Sen. Tinubu, a Governor for two terms and a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, did not go to school. “In 2016, President Buhari was said to be cloned and that he was later replaced with some folk from Sudan. “Fast forward to 2024, President Tinubu will be cloned or replaced by some folk from Togo. “The same clowns. The same lies. If its not their preferred party, if its not their religion, if its not their tribe, then, its not good. Fake news must be created to destroy the person. “Nigerians know better now. They know the merchants of fake news; those who create multiple accounts on the social media to disseminate fake news. They Labour In Vain. “Instead of marketing their candidates, they prefer churning out fake and half-baked stories. It only shows their preffered candidates have nothing of value that can appeal to Nigerians. “Campaigns will start soon. Dem go hearam.”

Sadio Mane officially left the Premier League side this week and joined Bayern Munich in a £27.4 million transfer. Mane had just under one year left on his Liverpool deal and with Salah in an almost identical contractual situation, the Reds are contemplating cashing in on him too rather than lose him for nothing next summer. Salah is currently Liverpool’s top earner, along with Virgil van Dijk, on around £ 240,000 a week. However, the Egyptian want parity with the best-paid players in the Premier League. Salah has noted the salaries Chelsea and Manchester City offer their top earner and is eyeing a salary of around £ 400,000 a week, which would shatter Liverpool’s current wage structure. Police offers N30,000 to Constable for returning missing dollars to owner

The Katsina State Police Command has rewarded a Constable, Nura Mande, with N30,000 for returning a missing 800 dollars to its owner in the state.   The Katsina State Police Public relations Officer, SP Gambo Isah made this known in a statement on Friday.   According to the PPRO, the constable was presented with a letter of commendation and N30,000 cash by the Commissioner of Police, CP Idris Dabban.   The command spokesman recalled that Mande was on official duty at the state Pilgrims Welfare Board Hajj camp when he saw the 800 dollars which belonged to a female intending pilgrim, Hajiya Hadiza Usman.   “While discharging his duty at the Hajj camp, PC Mande found the 800 dollars on the ground and returned it to the board’s Director of Administration, Alhaji Sada Salisu-Rumah.   “PC Mande revealed that it was his fear of God that made him return the money to the board’s office so that it could be returned to the owner.   “Salisu-Rumah commended the police constable for his good behaviour and honesty,” he added.

Lagos int’l airport runway lights collapse, pilots warn FAAN

  The approach lights on the runway of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, have gone off, forcing pilots to depend solely on equipment onboard their aircraft to land   An approach lighting system is a lighting system installed on the approach end of an airport runway and consisting of a series of light-bars, strobe lights, or a combination of the two that extends outward from the runway end, according to Wikipedia.  It is a lighting system that assists the pilot/aircraft to come in and land safely.   Impeccable airport sources said the approach lights collapsed on Monday evening and pilots were subsequently forced to rely solely on their onboard equipment to land airplanes.   The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak on the matter, said it was sad that the relevant aviation authorities did not issue a Notice to Airmen on the development until later on Tuesday.   A copy of the NOTAM showed that the document was issued by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency’s Aeronautical Information Services department.   The NOTAM, dated May 31, 2022, was signed by one Abah G.N, an official of the airspace agency.   As of 10:30pm on Tuesday, it was uncertain when the problem would be fixed.   The Acting General Manager, Public Affairs, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Mrs Faithful Hope-Ivbaze, asked our correspondent to send a text message when she was contacted on the development.   A pilot with one of the domestic airlines, who chose to speak on condition of anonymity on the matter, said the collapse of the approach light could inhibit pilots’ capability to land airplanes safely in bad weather.   According to him, the approach lights assist pilots in landing on the runway.   “It is sad that the relevant authorities are just issuing NOTAM on the development over 24 hours after the light collapsed. That is very dangerous. This is very annoying,” the pilot said.   A pilot and President, National Association of Private Aircraft Owners, Mr Alex Nwuba, said there was no reason to panick over the development but stressed that there an urgent need for the authorities to fix the lights as soon as possible.   Last year, some parts of the runway lights at the MMIA collapsed, forcing British Airways to divert its flight to the Abuja airport.   The development then forced the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, the aviation industry regulator, to downgrade the landing procedure at the Lagos airport from Category Two to Category One.   BA passengers whose flight was diverted to the Federal Capital Territory were forced to pass a night in Abuja before being flown back to Lagos.   The unserviceable state of the runway lights made it impossible for BA, which flies a large plane, to land at the Lagos airport at night. Other foreign airlines with relatively smaller planes can land.   Also, last week, the international wing of the MMIA was temporarily shut after the mangled body of a dead man was found on Runway 18R of the nation’s flagship airport.   During the temporary shutdown of the runway, international flights were prevented from landing and taking off from the airport’s international terminal.   Among the flights that could not land due to the shutdown was an Ethiopian Airlines flight 3907, a Boeing 77F aircraft with registration number ETAVN, which was coming from Lome, Togo to Lagos, Nigeria.   The flight was later diverted back to Lome after holding for a while.   Airport officials said the corpse was suddenly found on Runway 18R during a routine runway inspection by FAAN personnel.   As of the time of filing this report, FAAN had yet to confirm the identity of the corpse.

The cleric told newsmen that he reached out to leaders of the church and his wife to raise the money by all means to secure his release. Recall that Kanu-Uche was kidnapped on Sunday along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway in the Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State while on his way to the airport.

Lagos worker loses hand in factory accident, firm blames victim

  A factory worker with Spring Feeds Limited, Adekunle Shokunbi, has lamented how he suffered an industrial accident that made him lose his right hand while working with the company in the Itamaga area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.   It was gathered that Adekunle, alongside other colleagues was working when he attempted to clear the remnants of the animal feeds in the machine used in mixing the products at the company’s factory.   The 22-year-old said his right hand was inside the machine when his colleague, identified only as David, suddenly switched it on, adding that the machine cut his hand.    Adekunle said as he was writhing in pain, his colleagues rushed him to the Ijede General Hospital, adding that he lost consciousness when he got to the hospital.   He said, “I was employed as a stockist and at a point when the company was short staffed, it started diversifying and I was directed to supervise workers at the factory.   “I was carrying out my daily duty on April 5 when I suddenly realised that the workload was too much for the available staff members. So, instead of sitting down to just supervise, I assisted the people working at the factory to offload the animal feeds that the machine had mixed into a sack.   “While working, I realised that there were remnants of animal feed inside the machine and decided to clear the remnants with my hand because that has been the way they usually clear remnants in the machine ever since I got there.   “As I was clearing the remnants, one of the staff members, David, switched on the machine while my hand was inside it and the machine cut my hand. I kept shouting that he should put off the machine but he panicked and the machine damaged my right hand severely. My colleagues quickly rushed me to the Ijede General Hospital and when I got there, I lost consciousness.”   Adekunle’s mother, Ajoke, said after her son was stabilised at the Ijede General Hospital, he was transferred to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, from where he was transferred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, where Adekunle’s right hand was cut off during surgery.   The 46-year-old said, “I was at home when his dad called to inform me that a machine had cut my son’s hand. I was shocked. When I got to the hospital, I realised that his right hand had been bandaged so I could not see it properly. It was until we got to LUTH that I realised that he had sustained a very serious injury.   “We have been trying to have a meeting with the managing director of the company, but it has not been successful. She was insisting on meeting us at our house but we were advised to give a neutral ground for the meeting. So, we gave her the address of the neutral ground and when she got there and realised it was not our house, she zoomed off and we have not been able to have a meeting with her since then.”   A picture in possession of our correspondent showed Adekunle lying on a hospital bed with his hand bandaged.   Another picture showed the mangled hand in a bucket after being chopped off during surgery. A picture that showed the Ogun State indigene with no right hand was also seen.   The family’s lawyer, Olumide Adefila, while demanding justice for the victim, petitioned the managing director regarding the incident.   In the petition, dated May 4, 2022, Adefila demanded a prosthetic hand for Adekunle and N40m compensation.   The petition read in part, “Our client is just 22-year-old and will carry this shame and stigma of permanent disability for the rest of his life wherein he will be deprived of many things for as long as he lives.   “We have our client’s stern instruction to demand that a prosthetic hand be procured for him with immediate effect; that a workman compensation in the sum of N40m be paid to our client for the permanent and irreversible physical deformity suffered by our client due to no fault of his whilst being in the employment of your company.”   The MD of the company, Dayo Seriki, said the accident was caused by Adekunle, adding that he went beyond his duty.   He said, “It is not his duty to go and operate the machine; he went there on his own. How can somebody operate a machine without knowing about the machine? When the accident happened, I followed them everywhere and paid all the bills in the hospital. I have all my facts and figures as we never abandoned him.   “They said I should pay N100m, where will I get it? Do they want to kill me or cut my hand? Kunle Shokunbi is alive and I thank God for that, but if it is his mother that wants to dupe me because something happened to her child as she’s asking for N100m whereas the company is on a plot of land, so where is the money. We are still paying his salary.”    

Ekiti 2022: Group alleges arms build-up against opposition

A group under the aegis of ‘Ekiti Patriotic Front’, has raised the alarm over persistent attacks on supporters of former Governor Segun Oni and the Social Democratic Party’s candidate for the June 18 governorship poll in Ekiti State. EPF alerted the international community, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Major Gen Babangana Monguno and the Inspector-General of Police, Alhaji Alkali Baba, urging them to beam their searchlights on Ekiti to curtail the dangerous trend of light arms’ buildup ahead of the election. Addressing journalists in Ado Ekiti, yesterday, the EPF Chairman, Com. Tope Idowu, stated that it was disheartening that over 180 members of the SDP had allegedly been threatened, assaulted and had their property damaged by political thugs without arrest. Idowu expressed dismay at the level of political desperation and how some political thugs had been brandishing guns and dangerous weapons overtly, which he said could affect the credibility of the election. He said: “The family members, friends and associates of SDP’s candidate, Engr Segun Oni and his Deputy, Oladipupo Owolabi have become endangered species owing to incessant attacks directed at them by sponsored thugs. “As at today, more than 30 houses and property belonging to prominent members of SDP have been vandalised in several towns, namely: Ayetoro, Efon Alaaye and Ikole Ekiti to mention but a few. “In the same vein, about 150 SDP members in several other communities, including women and their children can no longer sleep peacefully in their homes for fear of attack. “We make haste to say that the ongoing proliferation of arms and unprovoked attacks if left unchecked are capable of escalating to the level of not only affecting the June 18 election, but also the 2023 general elections”. The group appealed to the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Alkali Baba, to order the State Command to arrest those parading themselves as thugs and flaunting dangerous weapons to intimidate perceived opponents. “How could thugs accost the convoy of the SDP Deputy Governorship candidate and seize his vehicles all in the name of politics? Most disappointing was the fact that nobody had been arrested. Police must rise and save the situation. The 2022 election is a litmus test to what will happen in 2023,” the group said.
