FIFA to expel Russia from World Cup -Report

  FIFA is in “advanced discussions” to suspend the Russian national team from international competitions including the World Cup following the invasion of Ukraine, a source with knowledge of the talks told AFP on Monday.   The source said Russia would be expelled from the World Cup “unless the situation improves”.   The Russian team are due to play Poland in a World Cup qualifying play-off semi-final on March 24, and would go on to face Sweden or the Czech Republic on March 29 for a place at the finals in Qatar later this year.   FIFA announced on Sunday that Russian teams would be allowed to continue playing under the name of the Football Union of Russia, playing home games on neutral territory and behind closed doors, and with the Russian flag and anthem banned.   Those measures were dismissed as “totally unacceptable” by Polish FA president Cezary Kulesza, who added that Poland would not play their World Cup play-off with Russia, “no matter what the name of the team is.”   Sweden and the Czech Republic followed suit, with Swedish FA chief Karl-Erik Nilsson saying he was “displeased” with FIFA’s decision.   The draw for the World Cup is due to be held in Doha on April 1 with the tournament taking place in November and December.   The International Olympic Committee on Monday called on sports organisers to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials from international events “in order to protect the integrity of global sports competitions and for the safety of all the participants”.   UEFA, which last week stripped the Russian city of Saint Petersburg of this season’s Champions League final and moved the game to Paris, must now decide whether to exclude Russia from the women’s European Championship.   Russia are due to play the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland in their group at the 16-team tournament in England in July.   Spartak Moscow also face being kicked out of the Europa League.   They are scheduled to play RB Leipzig of Germany in the last 16 next month.   AFP

Ukraine: FG in talks with Russia, Poland, others to evacuate Nigerians – Onyeama

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Goeffrey Onyeama, said the Federal Government was coordinating with foreign missions both in Russia and Ukraine to evacuate Nigerians from Ukraine back home for safety.   Aside from Russia and Ukraine, Onyeama said that the government was also coordinating with Nigeria’s foreign missions in Poland, Romania, and Hungary to evacuate Nigerians and ensure the safety of those who chose to stay back in Ukraine.    The Minister disclosed this in an update on his Twitter handle on Sunday, following the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops.   He tweeted, “Spoke on the phone with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba. Expressed sympathy for the needless loss of life and destruction and reiterated Nigeria’s recognition of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.   “I also expressed concern at the news of Ukrainian border guards hindering the exit of Nigerian citizens. He asserted that Ukrainian border guards have been instructed to allow all foreigners to leave. He promised to investigate and revert quickly.    “The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reverted to state: “It’s official: no restrictions for foreign nationals to leave the country exit. Problem is the result of chaos on the border and checkpoints leading to them”.   “I am personally coordinating with our missions in Ukraine, Poland, Russia, Romania, and Hungary to ensure we get our citizens out of Ukraine and bring back to Nigeria those ready to return, while supporting those who are remaining in Ukraine.”

Fani-Kayode paid N820,000 for forged medical report, Witness tells Court

A witness in the ongoing trial of Femi Fani-Kayode, former Minster of Aviation, has narrated how he allegedly paid N820,000 for fake medical reports.   The ex-minister, who is standing trial for alleged corruption, had reportedly forged medical reports to evade appearing in court. Testifying before a special offences court in Lagos, ABIDAT, a media practitioner, narrated how she was called by Fani-Kayode to procure the medical reports for different amount.   She said Fani-Kayode gave her N120,000 for the first forged medical certificate, N150,000 for the second forged medical report, N250,000 to procure the third forged medical report and N300,000 for the fourth forged medical report.   She also told Justice O.O Abike-Fadipe that Fani-Kayode dictated what should be the content of the medical report should contain.   Fani-Kayode is facing 12 counts before Justice Abike-Fadipe, brought against him by the EFCC, following his alleged use of forged medical report(s), tendered before Justice Daniel Osiagor of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, where he is being prosecuted by the EFCC for an alleged N4.9billion fraud.   One of the counts reads: “That you, Femi Fani-Kayode, on or about the 11th day of October, 2021 in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, by fraudulently used a false document titled: MEDICAL REPORT ON OLUFEMI FANI-KAYODE 60 YEARS/MALE/HOSP. NO. 00345 DATED 11/10/2021 before the Federal High Court, Lagos Judicial Division in charge No. FHC/L/251C/2016 which document you purported to have been issued by Kubwa General Hospital.”   Another count reads: “That you, Femi Fani-Kayode, on or about the 23rd day of March, 2021 in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, fraudulently used a false document titled: TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN RE: FEMI FANI-KAYODE MALE/60 YEARS HOSPITAL. NO. 32145 DATED 23rd MARCH 2021 before the Federal High Court, Lagos Judicial Division in charge No. FHC/L/251C/2016 which document you purported to have been issued by Kubwa General Hospital.”   He pleaded “not guilty” to the charges when he was first arraigned on December 17, 2021.   At resumed of proceeding on Thursday, the prosecution’s first witness, Bassey Amah, who introduced himself as Head, Medical Records, Kubwa General Hospital, Abuja, was cross-examined by the lead defence counsel, N.I. Quakers, SAN.   Under cross-examination, Quakers, through the witness, tendered in evidence a Certified True Copy of his hospital’s identity card, and it was thereafter admitted in evidence as Exhibit P2.   Quakers had noted during cross-examination that on the said ID card, the witness was identified as Assistant Chief Medical Record Officer, while he told the Court that he was the Head of the hospital’s Medical Record Unit.   Under re-examination by lead prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, the witness, however, clarified that what was on the ID card was his rank and that by designation he is the Head of the Medical Record Unit.   The defence also through the witness, tendered in evidence the extrajudicial statement of the witness, which was volunteered to the EFCC in the course of investigations and it was admitted as Exhibit P3.   The case has been adjourned till April 8 and 29, 2022 for continuation of trial.

Ukraine: UEFA to hold emergency meeting over Russian invasion

  UEFA are to hold an emergency meeting on Friday to “evaluate the situation” concerning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine with the former set to host the Champions League final in Saint Petersburg in May.   “Following the evolution of the situation between Russia and Ukraine in the last 24 hours, the UEFA president has decided to call an extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee for Friday 25 February at 10:00 CET (0900 GMT), in order to evaluate the situation and take all necessary decisions,” UEFA said in a statement.   The final of European club football’s premier competition is scheduled to be played on May 28 at the Gazprom Arena in Saint Petersburg, which already hosted several matches at last year’s European Championship and at the 2018 World Cup held in Russia.   European football’s governing body has a major sponsorship deal with Gazprom, the Russian state energy giant.   British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Tuesday that Russia had “no chance” of holding European football’s showpiece game if it invaded Ukraine.   “A Russia that has pariah status — no chance of holding a football tournament in a Russia that invades sovereign countries,” Johnson said.   There are currently four English Premier League clubs still involved in the last 16 of this season’s Champions League, including Chelsea and Manchester City, who contested last season’s final in Porto, Portugal.   UEFA has already moved the last two Champions League finals due to the pandemic from Istanbul to Lisbon in 2020, and then again from the Turkish city to Porto last year.   The Champions League final was last staged in Russia in 2008, when Manchester United defeated Chelsea on penalties in Moscow.   Zenit Saint Petersburg, the reigning Russian champions and current league leaders, are still involved in UEFA competition this season and are due to play Real Betis in Spain in the Europa League on Thursday.   The Ukrainian league, which was due to resume this weekend after its long winter break, has been suspended.   “We’ll withstand it,” posted Shakhtar Donetsk, the 13-time Ukrainian champions who have been exiled from their already war-torn home city for eight years, on Twitter with a picture of the Ukrainian flag.

High ticket rates: ‘There’s fire on the mountain’ – Nigerian airlines

  The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has explained the increment in ticket rates, now N50,000 minimum for economy class.   AON Vice-President, Allen Onyema, said only “a very stupid businessman” would not know “there is fire on the mountain”.   The Air Peace Chairman told reporters that Jet A1 fuel which previously sold for N200 per litre now costs N430.   Onyema rejected the labelling of AON as a “cartel”, adding that they never agreed to fix a specific rate.   He recalled that airlines charged more than N50,000 occasionally including the Christmas period.   Onyema said Ground Handling Companies raised their charges by 300 per cent after the National Assembly’s approval.   “So if the cost of my operation has gone up by 300 percent, just from the ground handling services alone, what do I do?” he queried.   “If the cost of aviation fuel has risen by over 200 percent, what should I do? If the cost of forex has risen from N340 to N585, what should I do?”   The AON reminded Nigerians that the airline business is “dollarized”.   “In year 2000, the lowest fare was N2,200, equivalent to $100 then. Now 22 years down the line, Nigerian airlines, we were charging less than $30, $40.   “Do you need to look for reasons why airlines are closing shops? Over 50 airlines have closed down in this country. Has anybody bothered to find out why?”, he quipped.

Alleged N450m fraud: Ochekpe describes case as witch hunt

A former Minister of Water Resources, Mrs Sarah Ochekpe, has said what befell her, Hon. Raymond Dabo and Evangelist Leo Sunday Jitung in an alleged N450 million money laundering case was a clear case of a witch hunt. Ochekpe, who along with the two aforementioned people, was on Tuesday, 22nd February 2022, discharged and acquitted of two out of the three count charges, but paid a N1million fine; advised well-meaning Nigerians to focus on addressing the myriad of challenges bedevilling the country, “rather than chasing shadows”. She disclosed this in an interview with journalists in Jos, the Plateau State capital, while reacting to the court judgment. She said, “We have been in court since 2018; before then some investigations were carried out by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). “We were invited to Gombe, we had received letters of invitation in December 2016, to report to Gombe office of EFCC in January 2017. For the whole of 2017, the investigations by the EFCC went on”, she explained. “When we were invited, we didn’t know what it was for, and we were told that it was in relation to some stolen funds, they mentioned the sum of N450 million. “The three of us wrote our statements to the effect that, in 2015, there was Presidential and National Assembly elections and funds were sent from Abuja to Plateau State, and three of us were nominated to receive the funds on behalf of the state PDP, then, of course, was a PDP government that was in power, we did that innocently without knowing there will be any attachment to the funds.” She further stated that the three of them were asked to give records of their “assets, liabilities and bank accounts” and they were investigated. “They alleged that the funds were stolen funds, and we said we didn’t know that; we only acted under instructions. “So when the case came to court, the prosecution counsel completed their prosecution, our lawyers filed in for a look in submission, the judge ruled against us, and say we should enter our defence, which we did, and the defence was concluded in October 2021. “In December 2021, the prosecution and defence made a presentation of their written addresses and the gave a judgment date of 22nd February 2022”, she continued. According to her, “Initially, there were two count charges of money laundering, and also withdrawing money through a financial institution, which we pleaded not guilty. “The charges were amended and they became three, and the third charge was that we retained the proceed of crime, we still pleaded not guilty.” “In the judgment of 22nd February 2022, the judge discharged and acquitted us on the basis of the fact that, from all investigations, they did not find any evidence, to say that we kept the money, because the money was from the bank, in the bank’s bullion van straight to the campaign office, and the cashier who received the money acknowledged that. “Also, the then ALGON chairman in the state also testified that the money was distributed to the 17 LGAs in the state for the election purposes. “There was no evidence against us to say we retained the money, and based on that, the judge discharged and acquitted us”, she added. “We were been convicted of a fact that there was a conspiracy among the three of us, also that we did not collect the money through a financial institution; however, these are technical issues that I cannot speak further on. Only the lawyers can.” On the judgment, Ochekpe said, “As far as we are concerned, we are not satisfied with this judgment, and we told our lawyers, and they are looking into the matter; to advise us on what next to do.” The former Minister however said she was happy to be out to continue doing what she is doing in her community and others around. According to her, “There are greater problems in Nigeria that every well-meaning Nigerian should address, rather than chasing shadows. “As far as we are concerned, this is a clear case of a witch hunt.”

2023: Why presidential aspirants should seek Atiku’s counsel – PDP chairman

AFCON 2021: Eguavoen slams Nigerian fans over Iwobi, Maduka Okoye bashing

  The Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Augustine Eguavoen, has slammed fans who abused and threatened the Super Eagles duo of Alex Iwobi and Maduka Okoye.   Both players were blamed by most fans for Nigeria’s exit from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.   Okoye conceded the only goal of the game, an effort most observers felt he should have saved before Iwobi was sent off for a tackle 15 minutes later.   After the game, fans went on social media to vent their frustrations, forcing Iwobi and Okoye to delete their accounts.   “People need to act responsibly and not turn their disappointments into hate speech and threats against some players.   “These players gave their everything and there is no way you can single them out for blame.   “Playing for Nigeria comes with a lot of pressure but you cannot bully, threaten or abuse someone for defending the honour of the country because you have access to social media. This is wrong and irresponsible,” Eguavoen told Al Jazeera.   Eguavoen, who was an interim coach at the AFCON, has since returned to his role at the NFF.
