2022: We killed 54 bandits, lost 5 officers in Katsina – Police

The Katsina State Police Command said it succeeded in killing 54 bandits and rescued 122 kidnapped victims from January to December 2022, even as it lost five of its operatives in the bid to restore peace and order to areas prone to banditry in the state. Within the period under review, the command recorded 1,102 arrests from 705 reported cases out of which 989 are still undergoing prosecution. Katsina State Commissioner of Police, Shehu Nadada disclosed this to newsmen during the state command’s end-of-year press conference on Tuesday. A breakdown of the arrest as presented by the commissioner of police showed that 266 suspects were arrested in connection with rape and unnatural offences, 241 in connection with banditry and 177 in connection with armed robbery, among others. Other arrests made within the period include 71 suspected vandals, 21 suspected illicit drug traffickers and suppliers of drugs to bandits. Nadada also disclosed that its operatives rescued 277 kidnapped victims and recovered 35 firearms, comprising 14 AK-47 rifles and 21 locally made guns, as well as 81 rounds of 76.2mm ammunition. In the same vein, the Katsina State Commissioner of Police said 1,092 domestic animals consisting of 727 cows and 370 sheep and goats were recovered.

Why we suspended nationwide implementation of cashless policy for six years -CBN

  The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has explained why it suspended the planned nationwide implementation of the cashless policy in 2017.   Aishah Ahmad, deputy governor, financial system stability directorate, CBN, spoke on Thursday while briefing the house of representatives on the cashless policy and the new withdrawal limits.   According to Ahmad, the suspension was to allow more citizens to fully embrace alternative electronic payment platforms, and ensure further development and expansion of financial access points.   Ahmad explained that the cashless policy was introduced in phases, first in Lagos on April 1, 2012, to reduce the use of cash in the economy, encourage electronic transactions and enhance the efficiency of the Nigerian payments system.   Following the successes recorded during the pilot phase, she said the policy was extended to five other states (Abia, Anambra, Kano, Ogun and Rivers) and the federal capital territory (FCT) in July 2013.   Under the policy, a daily transaction limit of N500,000 and N3 million for free cash withdrawals and lodgments was imposed for individual and corporate customers, respectively.   “Processing fees for transactions above the prescribed limit was fixed at 3 percent and 2 percent for withdrawals and lodgments by individuals and 5 percent and 3 percent for withdrawals and lodgments by corporates, respectively,” Ahmad said.   She said, although the full, nationwide implementation slated for April-October 2017 was suspended at the time, the cashless policy remained in force in the six states and the FCT.   “In recognition of significant strides recorded in the transformation of the Nigerian payment system, expansion of financial access points, financial inclusion and proliferation in electronic banking, the CBN on September 17, 2019 announced implementation of full cashless policy in the FCT and the six states (Lagos, Abia, Anambra, Kano, Ogun and Rivers),” Ahmad explained.   “The CBN also approved the reintroduction of charges on excess cash deposits by individual and corporate customers above the prescribed limits that were temporarily suspended in 2017.”   Ahmad said the cashless policy would now be implemented nationwide by January 9, 2023.   The development, she explained, is in response to the “significant evolution of the Nigerian payment system and widespread availability of a plethora of financial touchpoints and electronic payment options to all Nigerian citizens.”   She further clarified that there are currently no processing fees applied to cash deposits in order to enable seamless and unrestricted deposit of any notes affected by the currency redesign.   Ahmad listed the benefits of the cashless policy to include reduction of cost of cash management (processing, movement, security, destruction of old notes) which is often passed on indirectly to Nigerians, including eliminating the physical risk of cash – robbery, kidnapping, terrorism.   Others are promoting Nigeria’s positive reputation for fighting money laundering and terrorist financing; deepening the Nigerian payment system through more innovation and cheaper costs; and more effective transmission of monetary policies.

There’s nothing to fear about 2023 elections -IGP tells Nigerians

  Usman Baba, the inspector-general of police, says there is nothing to fear about the forthcoming 2023 elections.   Baba said this on Monday while speaking at the opening ceremony of a four-day conference in Ibadan for the police public relations officers (PPROs) across the country.   He said the police and other sister security agencies would ensure that the 2023 elections are conducted in a free, fair and credible manner.   “The 2023 general elections will hold, we have done it before when people came up and raise different doubts about elections in Edo, Ekiti, Anambra and Osun states, we did it and recorded huge successes,” NAN quoted Baba as saying. “We remain strategic on our actions and in synergy with other security agencies, there is nothing to fear about the 2023 general elections.”   Ahead of the 2023 polls, there has been apprehension about the preparedness of the security agencies, especially in the wake of recent attacks on offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the south-east geopolitical zone.   According to INEC, the presidential and national assembly elections are billed to hold on February 25, 2023. The governorship and state house of assembly polls will take place on March 11, 2023.

  Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says he will address security challenges affecting states in the north if he is elected president.   In April 2021, Bello Matawalle, governor of Zamfara, said there are over 30,000 bandits operating across six northern states.   Matawalle had listed the states as Zamfara, Katsina, Niger, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Kaduna.   Speaking on Tuesday at the flag-off of the APC’s north-west presidential campaign, held at the Ahmadu Bello stadium in Kaduna, the former Lagos governor also said he would prioritise job creation and boost agriculture.   He added that he would establish a marketing board that will give both farmers and consumers standard prices on agricultural produce.   “All those troublemakers, all those kidnappers, killers who are troubling the security of Kaduna and northern Nigeria, I assure you, we will eliminate them,” he said.   “Everyone of you should go home with determination. Check your PVC, and do not let them deny you your PVC. If you have not collected your PVC, please, in the name of Almighty Allah that gives power, go and collect your PVC.    “Today, the sun is brighter, the sky is clear, and we don’t want to talk too much. We want you to go back home in peace, happiness, and joy.   “Our hope is here. We will do everything to make you the young ones properly employed. We will create jobs.   “We will establish a marketing board that will give you the right prices, that will give you comfort in your homes, and make you better [people].”

  Lai Mohammed, minister of information and culture, says ‘Buga’, the hit song by Kizz Daniel, is a reflection of FESTAC`77 held in Lagos state.   FESTAC ’77, also known as the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture, was a major international festival held from January 15 to February 12, 1977.   According to NAN, the minister spoke in Abuja at an annual public lecture and symposium to commemorate the 45th anniversary of FESTAC ’77 on Wednesday.   The event, organised by the Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilisation (CBAAC), was tagged ‘deepening intercultural dialogue and integration for global peace’.   The minister, who was represented by Otunba Olusegun, the director-general, national council for arts and culture, said Nigerian artistes had been ‘bugaring’ since 1977 .   “I believe that without much Ado, we have been able to see the connection between the Nigeria of yesterday, today and that of tomorrow,” he said.   “The Nigerians have started bugaring from 1977 that is why today there is connection with the youths of today starting what we called Buga.    “I realised that a famous singer, king Sunny Ade, started `Bugaring’ in 1977 but we did not connect with the message. Today, the message is that there is hope for Africa and the entire world.’’   Mohammed said the festival has also brought about several achievements including FESTAC town and national theatre.   “It also gave birth to iconic building, the National Theatre, in Lagos which was a replica of a Bulgarian design as far back as in 1977,” he added.   “It played over 77 plays, 50 music and of course 40 art exhibitions with 200 poetry. I cannot image this kind of quality package in the history of any African country. Artistes that came included the like of Steve Wonder from USA and others.”   Also speaking, Oluwabunmi Amao, the director-general of CBAAC, said: “FESTAC was an epochal event that revived the hope and aspirations of Black and African peoples in a world where they were treated without respect, dignity and recognition.   “The contributions of the black and African people to the advancement of the world today is well documented and appreciated.”

  Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, has taken a jab at those asking questions about the age of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.  Speaking at the rally for Tinubu and Kashim Shettima in Lagos on Saturday, Gbajabiamila in apparent reference to the controversy over Tinubu age declared that “his age is what his mother said he is.” “And if they are in doubt about his age, they should go and meet his mother to reconfirm,” the Speaker said. NigerianEye recalls that Tinubu’s mother, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, who was the Iyaloja General of Nigeria, died in June 2013. There has been a controversy over Tinubu’s age. While Tinubu claims to be 70-year-old, his opponents insist he is far older than the age he’s claiming. But Gbaja who spoke at the rally told the APC supporters to educate the undecided Nigerians about Tinubu, saying he is the greatest politician in modern day Nigeria. He said, “They will ask you how old he is. Tell them he is the age his mother said he is. And if they are in doubt of his age, tell them go and meet his mother to reconfirm. “If they say he’s not educated. Tell them he is more educated than all the contestants put together. “If they tell you he is wanted in America. America has said repeatedly they do not know what they are talking about. When they said he is corrupt, tell them he is the most investigated in Nigeria’s history and nothing has been found against him.”
