Gunmen kill 14 in Kogi — 13 from one family

Unknown gunmen have killed 14 people, including 13 members of a family, in Agbudu, Koton-Karfe local government area of Kogi state. The incident happened around 2am on Wednesday. Ede Ayuba, Kogi police commissioner who confirmed the killings at a press briefing, said he had mobilised his men but the gunmen had left the scene before their arrival. “I was there and I was part of those who picked some of the dead bodies we are talking about,” he said. “Yes, 14 people were killed and about six others were fatally injured. The saddening thing is that out of the 14 dead bodies that were brought out, 13 were from one family. “In that family, it is only one person that survived. His uncle, his mother, his uncle’s wife, his younger brother, his senior brother’s wife, his wife and all his children were killed. “What I think is, there has been a long-standing communal problem around that area which we are not clearly seeing, but we know that it would not be far from it. “Investigation is in progress. The only person that survived the attack is already with us and he is helping us. The chief of that place is also helping us and some other spirited individuals.” Ayuba added that Abdulrasaq Isa-Koto, the ohimege of Koton-Karfe, and other residents are helping with investigation.

Private schools owners react as FG approves resumption

National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) has commended the Federal Government for approving the reopening of secondary schools. Classes will resume from 4th August to allow SSS3 students in Nigeria prepare for the forthcoming West African Examination Council (WAEC) examinations. The examination had been scheduled to commence on the 17th August, 2020. In a statement on Tuesday, NAPPS President Yomi Otubela, said the news was cheering for students, parents, teachers, school owners and other stakeholders. The body thanked the Ministers at the Education Ministry for their roles and giving listening ears to concerns about the suspension. NAPPS promised to take safety as a priority by ensuring that staff, students and visitors adhere strictly to the safety protocols and COVID-19 guidelines. Otubela urged state governments to follow suit by calling an emergency virtual meeting of all stakeholders in both public and private schools. He tasked them to further enlighten schools on what needs to be put in place having taken cognizance of their state peculiarities to prevent the spread of coronavirus. “We shall use the opportunity of this resumption to assess the workability of safety protocols that are in place in schools and hope that we can use the success of it to ensure other students fully resume as soon as possible”, the president added.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Governors Godwin Obaseki (Edo) and Nyesom Wike (Rivers) were behind the violence at the Oba of Benin’s palace on Saturday. The party said the destruction of property was “a glimpse into the do or die plot the PDP plans to unleash in the lead up to the September 19 Governorship Election.” APC spokesman, Yekini Nabena, said this in a statement on Sunday. “To imagine that the PDP chose to desecrate the Palace of the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II is despicable, unheard of and a new low even by PDP’s ignoble standards. Why is a show of force needed on citizens you wish to govern?” Nabena noted that the PDP was not campaigning for votes but relying on brute force, violence and intimidation ahead of the poll. He said Wike “promised on Saturday to make sure that everything needed is done to foist the PDP governorship candidate on the good people of Edo State.” APC noted that Wike is bent on importing to Edo State his Rivers State model of violence and intimidation. “He will not succeed! We definitely will not watch helplessly and allow the PDP and Wike turn Edo State into a killing field in their attempt to foist an unpopular candidate.” APC condemned the incident and called on security services to fish out the perpetrators and their sponsors. “During the entire Edo State governoship electioneering process, we stand with the good people of state in rejecting all forms of political violence as was unleashed on Saturday by the so-called “Obaseki Boys” and PDP supporters on hapless victims.” The APC reiterated its stand that the people’s will and votes will determine the Edo State governorship election, not voter intimidation and election violence.

Adeyemi added, “Braimoh revealed that his company and NYSC had already signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the issue at hand, stating that a curriculum for the various skill sets had already been developed, awaiting the approval of NYSC for work to begin. He expressed delight at the DG’s passion for the project to come to fruition.”

Nigerian govt provides update on reopening of schools

The Ministry of Education has provided an update on the reopening of schools in the country. Ben Bem Goong, the Director of Press, Federal Ministry of Education, in a statement on Friday said the Nigerian government has given school owners in the country up to 29th July 2020 to meet the guidelines towards the reopening of schools in the country. Goong also confirmed that the Ministry of Education has met with its Health counterpart and Nigerian Centre for Disease Control,(NCDC), the Education in Emergencies Working Group, and had developed and circulated guidelines for the safe reopening of schools. The statement said that schools are to undertake self-assessment and send feedback to State Ministries of Education, on July 29 2020, unfailingly. “Thereafter, consultations with relevant stakeholders will be held on 30th July 2020, to review the situation and decide on a specific date for reopening of schools or otherwise,” it added. “We have consulted widely with stakeholders in the education sector, including Commissioners of Education in all the states of the federation, the Association of Private School Owners of Nigeria,(APSON), National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools,(NAPPS), Provosts of Colleges of Education, Rectors of Polytechnics, Vice-Chancellors of Universities, State Governors, and development partners on the issue of safe reopening of schools.” The Federal Government had last week released guidelines ahead of the planned resumption of schools, at every level in the country.
